In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I’m sharing my experience of running the first ever Lighthouse Marathon. Pendeen to Godrevy on the North Cornwall Coast with a bit on at the start and finish to make it the full marathon distance.  For me it was an ARC 50 test. Stuart completed the task i...

The BOYD and Andy Brown

August 13, 2023 17:00 - 21 minutes - 14.7 MB

Imagine taking part in a run that’s called ‘Bring out your Dead’ or BOYD for short that starts with a rather macabre leading of the runners to the start line by a guy dressed in a plague type mask and with a drummer beating the death march and has a field of only 10 runners. And then just to spice things up this race takes place over an out and back distance of 4.3 miles which includes some horrendous up and down steps and in 2023 just to round things off took place during a particularly gr...

Organised by Sidmouth Road Runners this is a tough coastal path run which is particularly hard in the second half from Sidmouth. A great sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line. Distance wise this was my 8th longest ever run whilst time wise at 5:18 it was my 3rd longest time after the Classic Q...

Cousin Jack - 18 tough miles - March 4th 2023

March 05, 2023 17:00 - 29 minutes - 20.7 MB

Cousin Jack - the last event organised by Bys Vyken Events. After 7 years David and Sally are moving onto new ventures so a fitting end to their tenure with this most brutal yet spectacular of runs which takes in 18 miles from St Just to St Ives. It is a breathtaking route weaving its way through lots of old tin mining setups but it is tough particularly the section from Zennor to just before St Ives. I started recording just before we left the Miners Chapel in St Just which was race HQ an...

'Jeffing' the Brighton Half Marathon

February 27, 2023 19:00 - 24 minutes - 16.9 MB

Until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of 'Jeffing' – named after Jeff Galloway who I understand introduced the running world to the concept of running and walking and still achieving great times. I heard about it on the Bad Boy running podcast when a guy described how he had used Jeffing to run a sub- three hour marathon and qualify for Boston. He ran for two minutes and then walked for 30 seconds. I was intrigued and decided I would give it a go during my next road race which was ...

Carrie Glenister's 4 Challenges and 4 Successes!

October 22, 2022 17:00 - 40 minutes - 28.1 MB

I first met Carrie at the Cornwall Running show in April 2022. Carrie was persuaded to do a short podcast recording during which she explained that she had returned to running in 2021 after several years absence and had decided in 2022 to take on four challenges. And not just any old challenges but four far from easy ones. The Bodmin Beast marathon – a new event that would combine road and trail and in itself be a significant challenge The South-West Traverse – 45 miles on the south-west c...

Running and Motorbikes don't mix with Andrew Blizzard

October 13, 2022 17:00 - 31 minutes - 21.6 MB

Throughout the summer of 2022 my club colleague Andrew Blizzard was training in readiness for the pursuit of a sub three hour marathon in October. Towards the end of August during a speed session Andrew crossed a back road leading to an industrial estate and having manoeuvred around a car simply failed to notice a motorbike. The upshot was a very smashed up leg. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast Andrew recalls the accident and shares the rehabilitation programme he has undertak...

Loch Ness Marathon 2022

October 05, 2022 11:00 - 28 minutes - 19.6 MB

This episode, which is episode number 100 of the Running 44@60 Podcast, was largely recorded on the run at the Loch Ness Marathon 2022. After some very severe editing I hope the recording chronicles my run and indeed how difficult I found it in the last 8 miles or so, not because of the terrain or undulations but for reasons I have yet to properly identify I did find myself walking a bit and then predominantly shuffling those last few miles which seemed to take forever. Maybe I simply hadn...
