Day 47 - February 16, 2020 - Take Them as You Find Them

Topic: Take Them as You Find Them.

Action: Be kind and considerate to one another. It is not your decision as to what affects other people. If you find something funny, doesn’t mean other people will find it funny. If you do something that hurts another person’s feeling, it is not because they are sensitive or can’t take a joke. When we interact with one another we do so with the unspoken understanding that while we all have things in common, we also have things that make us different. You cannot assume to know who, what, or how a person will be. There’s a concept in the legal world called the “Eggshell Skull Rule” As wiki describes it, “the unexpected frailty of the injured person is not a valid defense to the seriousness of any injury caused to them.” That always stuck with me, because how true is it that we don’t truly know how fragile the people around us are. We think we know, but really we have no idea. I think all of this is best summarized by Louis C.K. who said, "When a person tells you that you hurt them, you don't get to decide that you didn't.”
