Dr. Jennifer Wiafe is an Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist for a trauma hospital in New York City. On this episode, Jennifer shares how the disparities in access to adequate healthcare and her experience on a Native American Reservation changed her outlook and piqued her interest in public health. A doctor at the age of 23, Jennifer and I talk about how she learned to break down barriers and build relationships with healthcare providers. We discuss the benefits and challenges of earning an advanced degree at a young age. Additionally, Jennifer dishes on how she learned to be more intentional about making time for herself. Since her work days are usually intense, Jennifer stresses the importance of taking breaks to prevent burnout - she discusses what she coins as her social meter and how she uses it to gauge and navigate how her energy is spent. We talk about the pros and cons of social media and how it may be impacting how we view ourselves. When her social meter is running low, she takes hiatuses from social media to focus on self-care. When she is not in the hospital working to optimize patient care, Jennifer can be found on the dance floor enjoying Soca and Afrobeats music, serving the community with her sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., or fundraising with her cheerleading team. Her team, Cheer New York is a non-profit adult volunteer team with a mission to perform for donations that support people who are a part of the LGBTQIA and HIV positive community in NYC. Last year the team raised $25,000 for members of the community! If you are interested in getting in touch with Dr. Jennifer Wiafe, you can find her on Instagram @RawrItsJennKnee
