In this podcast we break down the important differences between strength training and using the barbell for the olympic lifts, and why this relates to you and the kind of training you might be doing.
We go onto explain the difference between the two types of exercises, and you’ll build up a good mental picture in your mind of what they look like.
More importantly we discuss and explain why strength training is for everybody, and why the powerful Olympic lifts are only useful and practical to some people.
We identify the criteria proposed by Dr Jonathon Sullivan for assessing if a person should do the Olympic lifts.
It turns out many people perceive the Olympic lifts as the way to train for strength, but we explain that they are the display of strength and sport of their own. Whereas, the strength lifts can be trained by just about everybody and should be included in a well balanced programme.
We go into the practical definitions to help you understand the relevance of both types of lifts and then debate the use of popular gym programmes and classes such as body pump and Cross fit.
