Tales from the Drum

285 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 2 years ago - ★★★★★ - 8 ratings

On the first, second, and third Friday of every month, it’s Tales From the Drum—the Mended Drum, that is. We also bring you three-minute long mini-episodes, cleverly entitled Pratchips (like potato chips, see?) every Monday-Thursday. All of these are (usually) about the places, spaces, races, and other words that end in aces of the Discworld, that pizza-shaped place (but no anchovies) that rides through space on the backs of the massive elephants Tubul, Berilia, Jerakeen and Great T’Phon, which themselves stand atop the 10,000 mile-long world Turtle, A’Tuin. (According to the dwarfs, there was once a Fifth Elephant, which slipped of A’Tuin’s carapace and crashed into the Disc. But the dwarfs can be funny that way.) Obviously, a place such as this could exist only every normal curve must have its outliers, where the fabric of reality is thin, and magic is an everyday—well, reality. Of course, it was actually the late Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, who created the Discworld. He chronicled those places, spaces, etc. in 41 Discworld novels. In 500 years, he will probably be the only 20th-century author who is still being read. Seriously. He was that good. He was also incredibly prolific. In a span of 32 years, he wrote 70 books. They’ve sold northward of 50 million copies, last I saw. He was knighted in 2008 by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Terry passed away in 2015 from a rare form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease. GNU Terry Pratchett. If you don’t understand that, you can find out about it in Going Postal. Also, il miglior fabbro. That’s from T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” But you knew that. Thanks for listening—and mind how you go! GNU Terry Pratchett

Ye Gods and Little Fishes!

October 09, 2020 19:00 - 20 minutes - 13.8 MB

The title of this episode is a nod to my dad. That was one of his favorite expressions. We start out with Ponder Stibbons’ list of the necessary elements of fantasy fiction (via clacks), which led us ultimately into a discussion of the Disc’s gods and religions. I haven’t been hit by lightning, so I think we’re good.  Shoot me a clacks at [email protected] with whatever’s on your mind.  Support Medieval Gnome Productions (that’s us) however you bloody well choose. Relatively Creative

October 02, 2020 21:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

Creativity on the Disc takes different forms, just as it does on our Roundworld. We consider the forms created by Ponder Stibbons, Leonard of Quirm, Bergholt Stutley (Bloody Stupid) Johnson and Dick Simnel. We also ponder the fact that we meet the Disc’s first tourist in the first Discworld book, and the Disc’s first engineer in the penultimate book.  Oh and let’s not forget Dactylos Goldeneyes Silverhand… or C.M.O.T. Dibbler.   Shoot me a clacks at [email protected]. Support Medieval ...

The Amber Chronicles

September 30, 2020 03:00 - 59 minutes - 41 MB

This second (!) one-hour special for September focuses on the Chronicles of Amber, the ten-book fantasy series by Roger Zelazny. Specifically, we examine the protagonist, Corwin, one of the Princes of Amber, and an individual with a burning desire to rule the one true city, Amber.  As usual, [email protected] will get whatever you want to say right into my inbox. Remember that I am looking for people to share their thoughts about the Disc and/or the Portal in a short (30 second) audio cl...

Voices

September 25, 2020 21:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

From the Disc, to be precise.  Remember to check out Friends of Ponder’s Wizardly Portal on the Discord server. You can get exclusive content there, as well as discussing all things Discworld with fellow fans. I want to put you on the show! Just record a short clip (30 seconds or less) talking about Discworld, Sir Terry, the Portal… just about anything that’s not off-color or offensive.  I am also still in search of people to voice Discworld characters. Again, as long as you have the abil...

As Above, So Below (or something like that)

September 20, 2020 01:00 - 59 minutes - 41.1 MB

Just sharing the wealth. I have an extra hour's worth of time for September on my Buzzsprout account, and what better than to use it to share a one-hour special episode of the Portal with you? In this show we take a high-altitude look at the lands around the Circle Sea, explore names some more, and consider character's driving force in the Discworld novels. I'm looking for short (30 seconds or less) recordings about the show or the Disc from you the listeners. I can take care of the techni...

What's in a Name?

September 18, 2020 18:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

Change and development, whatever the motivation for it, is necessary for creative work such as the Portal to thrive. Part of that change is the new name for the show, and some other impending changes and developments are outlined in this episode as well. The episode also considers the question of what is in a name, looking at not only Sir Terry’s skill in devising names for Discworld people and places, but also that of J.R.R. Tolkien, who was of course a professor of philology as well as th...

At last, season 7!

September 11, 2020 19:00 - 20 minutes - 13.9 MB

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the forum. All's well that ends well though, and here is episode 1 of season 7. Listen and learn what's up with the name change. If you have suggestions for a new name for the show (The Mystery Portal is just a placeholder) please send them to me at [email protected]. I will take them all into consideration when choosing a permanent name for the show. Remember, the turtle moves. Don't let anyone tell you different.

With a Little Help from Her Friends

August 07, 2020 14:00 - 20 minutes - 14.3 MB

This time we consider the individuals and groups that mentor, safeguard, and assist Tiffany Aching. From the Nac Mac Feegle to Granny Weatherwax. Tiffany finds a lot of help along the way—although of course she always ends up having to do the hardest part all by herself. She is a witch, and that’s what a witch does.  This does it for season six. We’ll be back on the first Friday in September with a new season. Thank you all for listening to this one! Growing Up Crafty

July 31, 2020 14:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

Over the course of the Tiffany Aching books, we see her grow up as a person and a woman, as well as a witch. It’s never easy, but then she is “a witch down to her boots.” Thus spake Granny Weatherwax, and that’s high praise!  The Portal’s Patreon page may be found at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21210045&fan_landing=true. The Portal's Pratchett Passages v1n9: Perennial Favorites

July 20, 2020 00:00 - 36 minutes - 24.9 MB

OK, one perennial favorite. But he’s a big boy! Come enjoy some passages reflecting the earlier appearances of Detritus the troll, of whom the l-space wiki says “Detritus may very well be the single most successful character in the entire Discworld canon, moving from a semi-sentient, brutalized bouncer chained to a wall to a highly-regarded (at least by Vimes) senior sergeant in the Watch who makes very important and significant contributions to plot development in many of the major events i...

A Dwarf and his Wolf... and a Few Guilds

June 19, 2020 19:00 - 34 minutes - 23.6 MB

(with apologies to Harlan Ellison) In which we take a look at three of Ankh-Morpork’s lesser-known guilds, followed by a consideration of the two best-known minority members of the City Watch: Carrot Ironfounderson the Dwarf, and Angua von Uberwald the werewolf. And yes, I know you could make a good case for Detritus. And yes, Angua is not widely known to be a werewolf. Except to us, of course.     The Portal’s Patreon page may be found at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21210045&fan_land...

First Transmissions, and a Trio of Undead

June 12, 2020 22:00 - 19 minutes - 13.2 MB

This week we are proud to bring you the first transmissions from the HEM building. We hear from Ponder Stibbons, Mustrum Ridcully, and (somewhat improbably) Nobby Nobbs. We also take a look at three of Ankh-Morpork's major undead (or undead-related) characters. If you want more chances to win, a second, different quiz question is posted in the Portal's Discord server, "Friends of the Discworld Portal."  The Facebook page is up and running. The Portal’s Pratchett Passages v1.n3

April 21, 2020 14:00 - 19 minutes - 13.3 MB

Fifteen hundred fifty-five, and seventy-seven. Numbers to conjure with for a first anniversary show (which this isn’t), and for the reading of some passages from the lspace wiki (https://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Main_Page) and from The Color of Magic (which this is.) Deep Down and Graggy

March 27, 2020 22:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

Before talking about the Disc, this week I took a few minutes to talk about the Black Swan event we are all experiencing. It’s a time of reckoning, and we have to acknowledge that. I couldn’t ignore it this week, anyway, and so I devoted a few minutes to it. Btw, my wife and I were talking about the astonishing benefits to the environment the pandemic is bringing about, and she said, “Yeah, the planet is fixing itself.” It is indeed, and there’s a profound poetic justice there.  As for our ...

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

March 20, 2020 23:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

We move from the criminal sublimity of Gilt to the ridiculous psychosis of Lavish this week, after a stop at Lady Margolotta’s castle for a chat and a cup of…. tea. Be patient, smart and sensible out there, stay home unless you have to go somewhere, and figure out creative ways to commit those random acts of kindness, and Wash Your Hands! This week we begin to consider villainy—with a look at the etymological definition of the word. (Don’t worry, it won’t hurt a bit.) We then proceed to look at the villain of Going Postal, Reacher Gilt, and his relationship (including a great degree of similarity) with the book’s protagonist, Moist Von Lipwig. Heroes, Villains and Mrs Whitlow

March 06, 2020 22:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

Actually this episode is mostly Mrs. Whitlow. She deigned to be the Portal’s first special guest. This was made possible by Ponder Stibbon’s discovery of a method for sending individuals from the Disc to the Roundworld—at least as far as the Portal’s recording studio. I asked Mrs. Whitlow to join me since a lot of the show this week was by necessity housekeeping information about season 5.  To summarize: There is now a fifth Patreon tier available—that of the $20 per month subscriber. Empathy, Ecdysiasts, Footnotes and Housekeeping

January 31, 2020 19:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

This week I get a bit personal to start the show, because sometimes you have to do that if you want to display real empathy and compassion. In Ankh-Morpork, a visit to the Guild of Ecdysiasts, Nauchers, Cancanieres, and Exponents of Exotic* Dance leads some discussion of footnotes, H.L. Menken, and a rather surprising realization** about Sir Terry’s use of footnotes in early books. In addition, the results of Holly’s research into the etymology of the word canon are presented.  This is all...

Peeled Nuts, Treacle Mines and Big Cabbage

January 24, 2020 21:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

We begin this week with a consideration of some of the social clubs of Ankh-Morpork, and proceed through a memo about dragon infestations on the Grand Trunk’s towers in Hergen, to an appreciation of the economies of areas outside the confines of Ankh-Morpork, with special attention to both Uberwald’s unusual exports, and to the Sto Plains and the most famous product of that region. There’s a reason it’s referred to as the “Cabbage Bowl of the Disc.” This week’s contest quote: “To look at Fr...

Harry King and the Coming of the Age of Steam

January 17, 2020 22:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

After a dip into the Medicine Makers and Purveyors section of Directory of Ankh-Morpork Merchants, Traders and Services, we give a nod to the city's three greatest culinary figures. Then we consider Harry King, and his transformation from King of the Golden River to the Disc’s first Railway Baron. Finally, we consider the speed with which Ankh-Morpork develops in the brief time between The Color of Magic and Raising Steam, and realize that really just doesn’t matter. All this, and another sa...

As we begin to consider the economies of the Discworld, we would do well to remember Ankh-Morpork’s National Anthem: “We can rule you wholesale…”  We take a first look at the influence each of these men has had on Ankh-Morpork’s economic development, as well as taking a peek at Ankh-Morpork businesses overall (35 pages in the complete Ankh-Morpork, and 149 entries under “Ankh Morpork businesses” in the l-space wiki. "You Better Watch Out"

December 20, 2019 22:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

Both on the Disc and in Roundworld there is a seasonal song about a portly gentleman who wears red, comes to your house once a year to leave you presents (or perhaps something less pleasant), and is said to be omniscient when it comes to the behavior of children. This song begins with the words, “You Better Watch Out.” As we explore the magic of the (Hogswatch) holiday season, it is best to keep the above in mind.  We are talking holiday season here, and Hogswatch is a mash-up of New Year’...

Come along as we journey with members of the Guild of Trespassers in an excursion around some of the Disc’s geography. We learn about the basic similarities between Roundworld and Discworld geography thanks to the assistance of Dr. Pedanta of Brazeneck University. I don’t need much excuse to do a bonus episode, and when I received an email this morning announcing that the Portal had surpassed 10,000 plays I immediately set to work on this bonus episode. Ten thousand plays in 7 ½ months seems to me like something to celebrate. And, in this bonus episode the Portal goes back to its roots. Season 1, episode 1 was titled Welcome to Ankh-Morpork, and we spend a good deal of this bonus episode exploring the Disc’s greatest city more fully, in part by a wal...
