Tales from the Drum

285 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 2 years ago - ★★★★★ - 8 ratings

On the first, second, and third Friday of every month, it’s Tales From the Drum—the Mended Drum, that is. We also bring you three-minute long mini-episodes, cleverly entitled Pratchips (like potato chips, see?) every Monday-Thursday. All of these are (usually) about the places, spaces, races, and other words that end in aces of the Discworld, that pizza-shaped place (but no anchovies) that rides through space on the backs of the massive elephants Tubul, Berilia, Jerakeen and Great T’Phon, which themselves stand atop the 10,000 mile-long world Turtle, A’Tuin. (According to the dwarfs, there was once a Fifth Elephant, which slipped of A’Tuin’s carapace and crashed into the Disc. But the dwarfs can be funny that way.) Obviously, a place such as this could exist only every normal curve must have its outliers, where the fabric of reality is thin, and magic is an everyday—well, reality. Of course, it was actually the late Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, who created the Discworld. He chronicled those places, spaces, etc. in 41 Discworld novels. In 500 years, he will probably be the only 20th-century author who is still being read. Seriously. He was that good. He was also incredibly prolific. In a span of 32 years, he wrote 70 books. They’ve sold northward of 50 million copies, last I saw. He was knighted in 2008 by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Terry passed away in 2015 from a rare form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease. GNU Terry Pratchett. If you don’t understand that, you can find out about it in Going Postal. Also, il miglior fabbro. That’s from T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” But you knew that. Thanks for listening—and mind how you go! GNU Terry Pratchett

Discworld, By the Year

July 19, 2021 21:00 - 3 minutes - 2.1 MB

Sir Terry’s output was prodigious. In addition to the 41 Discworld titles, he wrote 16 non-Discworld novels, a four-book series called The Science of Discworld (with Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen) and co-wrote the five-book The Long Earth series with Stephen Baxter. All this in addition to numerous graphic novels, short stories, theater adaptations… and much more.  Prodigious doesn’t cover it. His writing was clear, engaging, entertaining, thought-provoking—and don’t forget extremel...

Evolution, Discworld Style

July 16, 2021 23:00 - 34 minutes - 23.8 MB

Sir Terry didn’t intend or probably even know that he was going to write 61 Discworld books. Some of the elements that appear in the early books just didn’t work, for reasons you’ll learn when you listen to this episode. Evolution has its casualties, and this week we learn about some of the things that disappeared from the books forever, as well as considering how Sir Terry accomplished this. Remember that we have two contests going on: The Portal Haiku Contest, and the Name That Show Conte...

Magrat

July 15, 2021 23:00 - 2 minutes - 2.08 MB

Magrat started out with the deck stacked against her—or at least with the aces removed—but she turned out to be an iconoclastic witch, an exceptional queen, and an outstanding herbalist to boot. Respect, Magrat.  If you have thoughts about Pratchips, please shoot me an email at [email protected]. Trymon vs Stibbons

July 13, 2021 22:00 - 3 minutes - 2.21 MB

First among equals is all well and good, but you have to look at who really has the power at good old UU. Today it’s Ponder Stibbons, who would find being named Archchancellor his worst nightmare. In the time of the coming of the Star, a wizard named Ymper Trymon wasn’t satisfied with de facto power. He wanted to be Archchancellor as well. Both men advocated the modernization of magic. Their motives, though, were very different. As were their fates. If you have thoughts about Pratchips, ple...

Men at Arms: Punes within Punes within Punes

July 12, 2021 18:00 - 2 minutes - 2.08 MB

Men at Arms is one of those transitional books in the Discworld series. I’ll be talking about that at length in this month’s second Patreon episode, which you will receive as usual if you are a $10/month subscriber, or if you just have to have it you can send me ten bucks by PayPal and I’ll send it to you.           Today though I’m discussing a single sentence from the book which highlights the way Sir Terry crafted the puns he put in the Discworld books. The sentence in question just stop...

Uberwald

July 08, 2021 00:00 - 2 minutes - 2.06 MB

Why did Sir Terry give the Disc’s version of Transylvania a German name? The issue came up in a discussion on our Discord server, and I’m sharing what I learned from that discussion with our listeners.  What we learn is that Sir Terry was well-versed in European history and an excellent linguist as well. That shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s read Monstrous Regiment, or Raising Steam, in particular. I say “in particular” because many of the Lancre books reference Uberwald, and Moist von Lipwi...

July 07, 2021 01:00 - 2 minutes - 2.08 MB

This second instalment in our experiment in three-minute podcasting is a bit of musing about the development of transportation in the Discworld series, both in terms of the form (fantasy to mundane) and of the richness and variety of transportation means over the course of the Discworld series.  If you have thoughts about this experiment in three-minute podcasting, please shoot me an email at [email protected]. Converting the Heathen (PCv1n1)

July 05, 2021 22:00 - 3 minutes - 2.1 MB

An Australian heavyweight in podcasting/broadcasting recently said he sees podcasts going to about 3 minutes in 5 years or so.  I have a hard time seeing that happening, and who knows? He may have been engaging in an elaborate leg-pull. But, whether he was or not, it sounds like a fun thing to try.  Therefore we present, for your edification and amusement, short Portal episodes, or (you guessed it!) Shorttalls. (N.b. On the Road with Nanny and Granny-- special guest appearance by Mistress Weaherwas (Season 10 episode 1)

July 02, 2021 21:00 - 34 minutes - 23.6 MB

We begin season 10 of the Portal with a little background info on Medieval Gnome Productions. Then, the one and only Granny Weatherwax has a conversation with Ponder Stibbons, which he passed along to us, which includes some sage advice about dog-walking and some commentary on those perennial Discworld Favorites, The Joye of Snackes (a.k.a. But we have arrived both at the end of the alphabet and of season 9, and most of this episode concerns the Watch, and Granny, so I thought, Y not? We’re getting down toward the bottom of  the alphabet with this episode, which is the first of two covering STUV. Mostly it’s about two characters, Vimes and Vetinari, who dominate the V’s. Yes, the Portal—now officially the Modern Fantasy Portal—is two years old. This week, in addition to exploring more of the Discworld alphabet, we here about some of my upcoming plans for Medieval Gnome Productions.         The most important thing for Portal listeners to know is that I am going to a three-times-a-month format. Gee, Ed!

April 02, 2021 23:00 - 19 minutes - 13.3 MB

Granny returns to the Portal this week to answer some listeners’ questions. In doing so she also affords me a golden opportunity to get punny with the title of this episode. You have to know 1960’s American TV sitcoms, though. And no, it has NOTHING to do with the medical condition known by the initials ED. Anyway, Granny has indicated she is willing to continue to answer listeners’ questions, so if you have one for her, email it to me at [email protected].         Also, just a reminder...

The title of this week’s episode may be a bit obscure, but you’ll puzzle it out.          Also, this season we’re doing what I am calling a challenge rather than a contest. Call it what you will, everyone’s invited to play. It works like this:         The challenge is basically the same as the game of Twenty Questions. Your goal is to figure out what person, place or thing is being sought, by means of asking questions. I’ll give hints as I think they’re needed. And you definitely need a hi...

Alphabet Soup

March 19, 2021 20:00 - 20 minutes - 14 MB

This season we’re returning to a themed season. The theme for the season is alphabet soup, and what that means is we’re going to explore the people, places and things of the Disc—based on the first letter of each thing, and in—wait for it—alphabetical order.         Also, this season we’re doing what I am calling a challenge rather than a contest. Sorry, that should have been smell. We spend our time in Ankh-Morpork in this final episode of season 7+1, though, checking out some news courtesy of the Ankh-Morpork Times, and considering the smell of that great city, that of its most odoriferous citizen, Foul Ole Ron, as well as taking a brief look at Ron's crew-- The Canting Crew, that is. What do you read, my lord?

January 30, 2021 17:00 - 22 minutes - 15.6 MB

A birdwalk with the Gnome… and, if you haven’t listened to the Portal enough to encounter the word birdwalk, you can think of it as a “one thing leads to another” moment…. Or, often, string of moments. Or string of punctation. Which leads me to one last thing—Sir Terry’s comment about Carrot’s ballistic approach to punctuation. I’m experiencing that currently, reading as I am Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (I’m currently on volume two). His barrages of comments and sem...

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

October 23, 2020 19:00 - 20 minutes - 13.8 MB

This week’s journey begins with an exploration of weather on the Disc, specifically vis-à-vis Sir Samuel Vimes, who manages to experience a lot of it in The Fifth Elephant and Snuff! (and, in a curious way, in Thud! as well).  That leads the Gnome into some musings about about dwarfs (not dwarves!) and trolls.  We also have our first “Voices of Listeners” segment, thanks to Luke, a long-time listener and supporter of the show.
