Discussion: Protecting Teens From Eating Disorders

Statistics show that about 30 million people are affected by eating disorders at some time in their lives, while it is generally teen girls that are diagnosed, males too can have an eating disorder, they just may look a little different than the girls.

Dr. Sona DeLurgio believes that education and  prevention are the best approach to minimize eating disorders. She is a wealth of knowledge and shares a ton of practical information of what to look for in our kids (even ourselves) to keep them educated and safe.

We discuss in depth about the different types of eating disorders:
- Anorexia
- Bulimia
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Orthorexia

One the biggest elements of prevention is to consume all media (mainly social media for teens) wisely, you want to be a discriminating consumer. It is shown that a majority of women see their body confidence go down and anxiety around beauty and appearance go up watching social media.

Social Media can be a major player in self confidence for teens and adults. Tune in to learn how we can arm our kids (and ourselves) to take it all in wisely, and to know themselves as they post and look at others posts and comments that come their way.

 - Anna shares the teen perspective of how looking at images on social media affect how teens view themselves.

What causes someone to develop an eating disorder? We go deep the top four areas:
- Psychological
- Interpersonal/relational
- Social
- Biological

Kids are always watching what we do as parents.

Should you share with your kids that you had an eating disorder when you were younger?

Sona shares with us 8 signs that teens and parents can look out for in their kids.

Further discussion points:
- How can you help if you see someone with the signs of a possible eating disorder?
- How do eating disorders contribute to timing of puberty and female reproductive  system?
- What strategies can parents use to prevent their teen and pre-teen developing  eating disorder?
- Why is intuitive and mindful eating the best way to honor hunger and cravings?
- How to be a good role model for your kids around body image?

Tara asks Anna to share her opinion of her parenting around body image, and body acceptance.

Find your connection to who you are, find and use your own voice and stand up for yourself, put boundaries in place - these are all healthy steps that we want to take and embody.
