What an honour it was to spend a couple of hours with Tom Carroll as he shared his story of his life through addiction. Through childhood trauma, fitting in with his peers, looking up to older crew who were addicts and navigating the highs and lows of life on and off the pro surfing circuit. It's been a massive journey for Tom who's addiction started with alcohol, then cocaine and eventually crystal meth.
We talk about how he used the 12 step fellowship of NA and AA, rehab and a dedicated mediation practice to assist in his recovery. He talks about the importance of steering clear of people who may trigger your enable your addictions when you are in recovery and the importance of learning to face your demons. Surrendering to a new way of being, trusting the process and facing change.
Tom now teaches meditation for free online for anyone who wishes to join his instagram live sessions which are held at 5.50am Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays (when he is in the country). He also runs retreats which aren't just for surfing but deep dives into meditation and movement with his beautiful wife Mary.

If you are struggling with physical dependancy on alcohol consider contacting a local AA meeting or a drug and alcohol therapist. Always consult a GP before stopping alcohol.
