Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

371 episodes - English - Latest episode: 6 months ago - ★★★★ - 7 ratings

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session. https://listentodrlisa.com/ #jencatron #pauloutlaw

DLG204 Legendary Penny Arcade wants to tell people they are not crazy.

August 07, 2019 21:52 - 59 minutes

Penny Arcade is an icon. By that I mean she stands for something. Something important which involves being aware. She is also incredibly talented and entertaining. Penny travels a lot performing all over the world, but she is on the phone and not too far away, calling in from a residency at The Watermill Center  to talk to me in the studio. Her latest show Longing Lasts Longer, is a rock n’ roll blend of stand-up comedy and memoir which she has performed for the past 4 years, all around the w...

DLG202 Artist Leah Schrager makes people uncomfortable in a consciousness-raising way.

July 23, 2019 19:54 - 59 minutes

Fresh off  her first in person live performance at an exclusive club in Montauk on July 4th weekend, artist Leah Schrager unloads about her experience (positive = exciting) performing for an unsuspecting audience at the $2000/lounge chair pool. Photos of her performance. Angles On A Woman HERE. Leah was on #DrLisaGivesAShit in 2016, and at that time we tried to make clear how hard it is for her work to be interpreted as art and photography. Once again I stress all of Leah’s achievements: her ...

July 16, 2019 18:07 - 59 minutes

Loren Munk is an amazing painter and art world chronicler. His art and videos are an amalgamation of art history. The well-known painter, Katherine Bradford said he deserves a MacArthur "Genius" Award and I wholeheartedly agree. As James Kalm, he’s had over 2 million views of his web series covering art, galleries, artists, openings and even some street musicians. There is so much to learn about this former Mormon from Utah. Loren was talented as a child but art didn’t come alive for him unti...

June 12, 2019 17:13 - 59 minutes

In this episode I am away at an artist residency but I want to get in a session with my good friend, artist David Kramer, because his exhibition is opening at The Front Room gallery and I need to know what he is wearing there, (he didn't know). RFB host, Billy C of THE Attitude Adjustment Show and Cosmic Debris, runs the studio and chimes in while David is on the air. David is clearly excited about the show and happy with his work. We get a view of some of the behind the scenes antics involvi...

DLG199 I LOVE Emily Frembgen's music so I had her interviewed by one of our own talented music interviewer people, Gianluca Tramontana.

June 10, 2019 22:22 - 59 minutes

Emily Frembgen is a talented singer/songwriter, so when I had to go out of town I had one of our music hosts, Gianluca Tramontana, with serious chops as a music journalist (among other things) sit in with her to great results. Great chemistry, personalities and best of all Emily's music - she brought her guitar. You can hear more of her work on Spotify as well. And you can listen to Gianluca's show, Sitting with Gianluca every Wednesday on Radio Free Brooklyn at 6pm, where he has made it his ...

DLG197 Dr. Lisa talks with, George Tanenbaum her former work partner who made it big in advertising.

June 10, 2019 22:20 - 59 minutes

George Tannenbaum was hired the same time I was in 1990, to be my copywriter-partner at a well-known (at the time) ad agency, Ally & Gargano, 1990-1995. I was an art director. We were both just past a solid start in our careers as creatives in advertising. George wound up being super-successful in advertising—he’s an Executive Creative Director and Copy Chief at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising and I wound up flunking out of that business that George still works in. In this episode, I coerce G...

DLG196 Downtown icon/East Village Bar Owner, Abby Ehmann is my Hero.

June 10, 2019 22:16 - 59 minutes

Abby Ehmann was one of those "cool chicks" that everyone knew or was aware of, but my nerd lifestyle kept us from crossing East Village paths until now. Abby was at the helm of so many important and radical events. I was just about to write them in here, but there are too many so scroll down. Anyway Abby is in my age group she's almost 60, I'm 63. I identify with Abby now, or I would like to! I think it's because we're in the same age group, but both still as crazy as we were when we were yo...

DLG195A A two-part episode: Curator/writer, Jillian Steinhauer discusses a show she's curated, THEN artist Christopher Stout talks queer abstraction.

June 10, 2019 22:15 - 59 minutes

00.00-00.30: Art critic/writer and now curator, Jillian Steinhauer hit a collective nerve with a powerfully meaningful exhibition she’s curated at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts titled In the Presence of Absence. The show is described briefly here by Mary Louise Schumacher, "When it comes to grief, our culture values the stiff upper lip. But stoic composure comes with a price. It keeps the realities at arm’s length, including truths about the erasure, enslavement and slaughter of Nati...

DLG192 A fav young artist Colin Radcliffe is having a solo show. And Noah Becker talks about artist parties he’s throwing on the rooftop of the Jane Hotel.

April 14, 2019 22:48 - 59 minutes

The first half of this session I spend time with 25 year old artist COLIN RADCLIFFE http://www.colinjradcliffe.com/ who is about to have a solo show at Equity Gallery in Manhattan. I am a huge fan of Colin’s so there is some fawning on my part which he handles well. Colin's work is particularly compelling because the emotional quality is so complex. Here are some adjectives: funny, quirky, weird, gross, beautiful, charming, repulsive, magical, pan-sexual, pan-racial (including/not limited to)...

DLG190 Artist Alessandra Expósito brings her own shrink to our session.

April 02, 2019 17:55 - 59 minutes

This got fucked up—to hear my session with Alessandra Expósito, please start at the 28 minute mark. Alessandra is a terrific artist and does a lot of work with animal skulls (including chicken skulls!) https://alessandraexposito.com/ She also does therapy on stage, where SHE IS THE PATIENT. She brought her shrink with her so we had a talk with Alessandra as the patient with 2 shrinks: me plus her own personal shrink that she brought along. Fascinating! Besides talking a bit about her work, ...

DLG189 Artist Rebecca Major discusses one of the most unusual childhoods Dr. Lisa has heard. (Hint: Budapest, The Squat Theater)

March 25, 2019 01:16 - 59 minutes

Rebecca Major is a smart, highly original, shit together artist. Dr. Lisa plumbs her childhood experience of moving at 5 years old with her mother and 10 year old sister from Budapest, Hungary to NYC to live with a prominent, wildly avant-guard theater group, the Squat Theater (active in a large communal setting. Rebecca has since become an accomplished artist and grounded adult, but it couldn’t have been easy. We get a great vision of her experience and some of the effect it’s had on her li...

DLG188_ Artist David Kramer saves Dr. Lisa's ass (again).

March 25, 2019 00:02 - 59 minutes

Five minutes before my show was to go live, I realized my guest wasn’t coming, so I called up my always entertaining friend, artist David Kramer and ragged on him for an hour. If you don’t know how mean I can be, well, listen to this. Kramer more than holds his own while we gossip about the art fairs in town. We find out what David’s working on, his upcoming solo exhibition in June at Front Room and whether or not he has stolen ideas from his 19 year old son, Martin who’s in film school. Here...

DLG187_ Ken Johnson talks about the lives of his human non-humans, Ball and Cone.

March 24, 2019 23:09 - 59 minutes

Ken Johnson started a project about 5 years ago titled Ball and Cone. http://ballandcone.tumblr.com/ Ball and Cone are simply the life and experiences of an anthropomorphized ball and an anthropomorphized cone duo in a comic style format. Ball and Cone have no sex or human identity, just one eye each, and they are adorably compelling and funny. They are very simple but explore questions and ideas that can be very complex, such as the meaning of existence and what is mirth? BUY THE BOOK here: ...

DLG186 Comedian Jim Tews explains how being yelled at in the Coast Guard for 4 years was great training for a comedy career.

March 21, 2019 17:50 - 59 minutes

I am obsessed with the creative process which led me to becoming a fan of Jim Tews’s podcast "Quitting Comedy." http://www.jimtews.com/podcast.html He has great comedians talk about their career and process by starting with the premise : Have you ever thought of quitting comedy? Comedian Jim Tews learned a lot about discipline from his years in the Coast Guard which turned out instrumental in helping his personal development and managing his creativity productively. In this session with Jim,...

DLG185_A line in Rolf Leer’s bio says, “Grew up on a farm that was a mental institution.” Rolf is founder of Quoted Magazine.

February 20, 2019 21:06 - 59 minutes

Rolf Arne Leer had an unusual upbringing which connects him intimately to outsiders. He is a highly creative, successful, HANDSOME guy who grew up on a farm in Norway that was also a center for mentally ill people. He is the 3rd generation to manage a facility where the working farm provides occupational therapy, housing and medical care for 16 patients at a time. Rolf and his sister were brought up with schizophrenic, bipolar patients, a Down syndrome woman, etc. https://www.quotedmagazine...

DLG184_This session w Marina Granger of the Artist Advisory is gold for artists.

February 13, 2019 20:50 - 59 minutes

I got to spend an hour with artist advisor Marina Granger, founder of https://www.theartistadvisory.com/about-2/ and she imparted some art career wisdom that you can’t get anywhere. We’ve all heard of creative coaches, etc., but Marina is truly in a class of her own. She has a lot of experience from her art world experiences working in galleries and museums. Here’s a quote from one of her clients that describes her abilities nicely: “Like the perfect combination of therapist and business coac...

DLG183 Rosa Escandon is funny and helps open minds.

February 11, 2019 21:32 - 59 minutes

Rosa has a unique perspective on life and comedy as she comes from a 2-Mommy family, a Jew and a Hispanic. She did know her bio dad and his family, they’re all close, so it sounds a bit like a very modern day and much more interesting version of the Brady Bunch. Rosa is a powerhouse at 25; she’s been in a solid relationship with a guy for two years—all in all, I dub her well rounded and secure. Rosa is on the board of The Black Women in Comedy Festival which is coming up-Feb. 28 thru March 3!...

DLG182_Dr. Lisa tries to convince Comedian/Animator, Manolo Moreno that he should be an industry.

February 06, 2019 16:59 - 59 minutes

I am impressed with comedian/animator Manolo Moreno’s work. It’s highly original and HILARIOUS. Check it out here. Manolo was brought up in Pennsylvania with 4 siblings and parents originally from the Philippines. Dr. Lisa delves into whether he wants to bring his work to a larger audience—if he does, then why the fuck is he burying his impressive credits in the darkest corners of his website??? Manolo is endearing and great at articulating his psychological makeup so there is lots of learnin...

DLG180_Public Advocate Candidate, Dan Christmann says, "Humanity for ALL of the World starts and ends in NYC!"

January 21, 2019 20:34 - 59 minutes

I met Daniel Christmann on the street earlier in the week while he was soliciting signatures for his campaign for Public Advocate. He’s a super passionate guy with very specific, thought out points of view. He shared his views on more than what to do with the L train. He wants to motivate society in general. Daniel’s an interesting guy who has learned the variety of people and neighborhoods through his job as manager of a plumbing company. He’s is REAL. More about Dan and his platform here: h...

DLG179_Artist, activist Natalie White that isn’t afraid of the unknown to a degree that I envy.

January 15, 2019 20:34 - 59 minutes

I got to talk with Natalie White about how she came to NYC at 17 from Fairmont, West Virginia, without any specific plan. She met Peter Beard and soon became the muse for a lot of famous artists such as Beard, George Condo, Spencer Tunick, Sean Lennon and many more. At first, she was their inspiration and then went on to creating her own work, becoming an artist herself, with many exhibitions. White then used her boundless energy to make changes for women’s rights, walking 250 miles from NYC ...

DLG1846 Live reporting from the Superfine Art Fair in Miami with co-founder/Artist James Miille

December 24, 2018 19:13 - 59 minutes

My fellow host Billy C. manned the RFB studio for me while I reported by phone live from Miami Art Week, at Superfine Art Fair specifically with the smooth James Miille co-founder. So much great art and the artists were there, generously allowing me to make fun of them as I am wont to do. https://superfine.world/miami-beach/

DLG1845 Comedian Kelsey Caine was a Miss New York Beauty Pageant Contestant!

December 23, 2018 18:50 - 59 minutes

Kelsey Caine and I connected because we have both competed in pageants. I was Miss Subways 2017, but Kelsey competed in an actual beauty pageant! Miss New York! Anyway it was snowing like a motherf*cker and Kelsey was about 35 minutes late. I had to hold down the fort with stories about bra shopping and a conversation with a call-in baker in Nova Scotia. Kelsey did give us a back scene view of the pageant world from the most HILARIOUS perspective—she was competing in the most subversive w...

November 14, 2018 01:27 - 59 minutes

Five days before the historic 2018 mid-term elections, I sit down with creative entrepreneur, Yulia Laricheva. I’m on the hunt to find out where her drive and ambition comes from. It's hard not to feel like a lazy ass around this lady! This leads to a deep dive into her experience of moving to the U.S. from the outskirts of Moscow when she was 10 years old. Yulia feels lucky to have the opportunities she has as opposed to what they would have been if her family hadn’t left Russia, and she doe...

November 04, 2018 18:50 - 59 minutes

Thanks to the Ecuadorian Film Festival, I get to sit down with accomplished actress and jazz singer Cristina Morrison, appearing in one of the main selections, Agujero negro (Black Hole) http://www.ecuadorianfilmfest.com/copy-of-template-5, who grew up in Ecuador and Miami but has also lived in Galapagos. Fascinating to hear how as a young girl she grew up in 2 very different cultures, American and a strict Catholic Latin American one. Her story about a childhood trauma involves being locked ...

What's more important, "Making the work or pleasing the a...

DLG1837 Comedian/singer/songwriter/filmmaker/cartoonist, Anthony Kapfer is good at everything except finishing college.

October 28, 2018 23:26 - 59 minutes

Anthony is a thoughtful guy for such silly songs. I guess I’m thinking now his silly songs are not very silly at all when you really think about them. https://music.anthonykapfer.com/ He’s super-talented and can’t help following his own path, which makes for a lot of great stories. We really bonded, especially since he reminded me of Frank Zappa. We got to play his music, a song from his album “Songs for Children to Cry To”— “D is for Divorce,” which is hilarious and created an earworm that I...

DLG1836 It’s Bushwick Open Studios AGAIN with curator/artist, William Norton.

October 28, 2018 23:12 - 59 minutes

You can feel my distress in the beginning of the session, then Norton comes in and we talk about the spectacular show he is curating at the gallery 100 Bogart which is next store to the studio.so When he comes in, I finally chill out. DLG1834 Artist Amy Hill is Naturally Thin and Naturally Talented.

September 25, 2018 16:55 - 59 minutes

Amy Hill and I have known each other for a long time, but like with so many artists, we mostly see each other circulating at openings. We use the occasion of her 3rd solo show at Front Room Gallery-https://www.frontroomles.com/ — open until Oct. 21 to sit down together in the RFB studio. It was particularly lovely to be able to sit down with her and grill her about whatever I was interested in knowing about her. She is a charming sport! See more of her incredible work HERE: http://www.amyhill...

DLG1832 I want to be more like artist Sharilyn Neidhardt.

September 05, 2018 16:20 - 59 minutes

When I first, met Sharilyn Neidhardt a few years ago when I moved to Bushwick, I noticed that she was a leader in the community right away, and now I know why. Sharilyn has the goods—in her work, how she handles herself and her presence in a group of people. What I’m saying is, this lady has her shit together. We get to check in with her just a few days before her solo show, SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE, opens at Art During the Occupation Gallery http://www.art-during-the-occupation-gallery.com We...

DLG1830 Heather Fink is visiting from LA

August 27, 2018 21:27 - 59 minutes

In my position as an untrained therapist, I would say that the way Heather “presents” and the way she really is don’t quite match up. Kind of the way the Kerry Russell character on “The Americans”, can go from glam to hand to hand combat without breaking a sweat. Except Heather wouldn’t hurt anybody. She’s SUPER caring! Heather is a writer/director who’s made a lot happen, including a feature film, "Inside You", that she wrote, directed and starred in. https://www.amazon.com/Inside-You-Heath...

DLG1829 UN Ambassador Tate talks about his path to becoming a humanitarian.

August 15, 2018 16:47 - 59 minutes

So I had a seriously deeply engaged humanitarian come to the studio and discuss how he came to the service that he is in now, which is mostly leading young people at risk into exemplary human beings. He's been doing it for over 20 years and he makes crazy positive shit happen. Ambassador Tate's road was harsher than I can imagine. It involves foster homes, alcoholism, abuse and the murder of his brother. You can't help but find this dude inspiring. The thing about this session that stuck with...

DLG1827 Artist Eric Doeringer brings his SVA precollege class to see Dr. Lisa

August 14, 2018 00:03 - 59 minutes

This was so fun and outta control! Artist Eric Doeringer http://ericdoeringer.com/ teaches a pre-college class at the school of Visual Arts http://www.sva.edu/ in the summer. He has these 15-16 year olds that he teaches art making, art appreciation and how not to fall into the subway. I actually learned a lot because I don't interact with that many kids at one time and I was so impressed with the range of personalities and how they each translated to the radio show! They had questions for me ...

DLG1825 Reverend Jen: Unimaginable adventures you can't make up.

July 18, 2018 17:45 - 59 minutes

In our phone session RevJen highlights some of her (frightening to me!) adventures, such as being at a balloon sex fetish party. Or how she was a stripper as an experiment at a hole-in-the-wall bar in Queens. Then there’s the family float party her dad instigated when the basement flooded. She's fearless and funny. Besides all the art, performance, Art Star Matriarching, RevJen is an amazing writer. This is one of my all-time favorite books EVER. https://www.amazon.com/Live-Nude-Elf-Sexperim...

By the end of this session, I was concerned that I had made artist, Lane Twitchell mad at me. Fortunately I could hear Lane giggle through the tears.

July 18, 2018 17:09 - 59 minutes

Lane Twitchell http://lanetwitchell.paspartout.com/ is an intense, complex, accomplished artist. His work is remarkable and as multi-layered as he is. Although I’ve known Lane since 1996, we covered a lot of new ground here. As a self-proclaimed psychotherapist, I would say from hearing about Lane’s siblings, that he comes by his intensity biologically. I also think that we got into “an elephant in the room,” topic about how his work and how his history affects the presentation of it. One thi...

DLG1822_Business founder/entrepreneur, Rinat Sherzer explains why the question, "Why aren't you dating anyone?" hurts.

June 22, 2018 16:29 - 59 minutes

Rinat is an extremely accomplished 39 year-old woman. She’s still single. This is a great and productive session as we learn how one special person opened Rinat’s eyes to her intimacy obstacles. The session concludes with a discovery of Rinat’s relationship to the ideals of family and how that manifests in her dating life as an individual on her own road. Rinat’s highly generous vulnerability in her own story is a gift to the rest of us trying to uncover our own selves. In Rinat’s own words a...

A documentary about two young directors who remake a classic New York film with a cast of seniors. Help them finish it!! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/reconstructing-annie#/ https://vimeo.com/c...

DLG1820_Did you know artist/writer, Chris Bors trained with Olympic Wrestlers?

June 09, 2018 18:44 - 59 minutes

Did you know artist and writer, Chris Bors trained with Olympic Wrestlers? I’ve known Chris Bors for years and I’ve always thought of him as a particularly bright, talented, highly educated, interesting, but mild mannered. How did someone who has macho heavy metal, indie cartoons and “Fuck Kanye West,“ in his paintings present as such a different personality from his work?
