Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

371 episodes - English - Latest episode: 6 months ago - ★★★★ - 7 ratings

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session. https://listentodrlisa.com/ #jencatron #pauloutlaw

DLG1636_Comedian Alison Klemp and I have a serious discussion about the unconscious bullshit we women buy into.

September 16, 2016 05:08 - 59 minutes

MOST IMPORTANTLY- Don't miss this! http://www.cinderblockcomedyfestival.com/ I dragged the lovely and normally hilarious comic, Alison Klemp into a serious discussion that I've been wanting to have for a long time with a smart, aware woman who doesn't take shit. Alison has proved that in spades lately as she found herself in the middle of a Kurt Metzger/Michael Che/UCB rape all-media-platform fiasco. http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/news/a48046/kurt-metzger-rape-culture-amy-schumer-ucb...

DLG1635_Why is Travis SD so happily married? What's his secret....

September 11, 2016 02:00 - 59 minutes

I notice from social media that Travis SD, author, journalist, playwright and stage performer is in an obscenely perfect relationship. Is this real—how'd he pull that off?? We learn that Travis got married and had children at a very young age-21! His passion for his work, like many creative people, has informed his life along the way. I think finding someone (in another creative field!) also passionate about her work has helped-along with maturity of course. I learned a lot here. What came ou...

DLG1634_Comedian Evan Leslie Jones and I get high and talk about how he's misunderstood.

September 11, 2016 01:25 - 59 minutes

Comedian Evan Jones likes to get high so we eat pot cookies before this session. Even gives off the vibe that he's a bro, but he's SO not. He's weird and complexier than you would think. He's also crazy driven about doing comedy. And there's a great story in here about him performing comedy naked and the ridiculously unexpected consequences of it. https://twitter.com/frodeziac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BcOwdnC9xM

DLG1633_What's the deal with Paul D'Agostino, Artist, Writer, Skateboarder.

August 30, 2016 22:01 - 59 minutes

There will be a part 2 soon! TBD Here is the email exchange that Paul and I had on Friday, August 19, the day after our radio chat: Dear Paul- It's really been bugging me. In our Dr. Lisa session yesterday, I didn't get to find out how your sense of humor worked, what you were thinking or not thinking. And I never felt like I cracked the code of how human relationships work in your world. My sense is that you are truly rewarded by your many pursuits, but that they may have precluded deep...

DLG1639_Kelly Dwyer is trying to balance performing and drinking.

August 24, 2016 02:04 - 59 minutes

Funny, multi-talented performer, Kelly Dwyer and I focus on her interest in cutting down on drinking, but it's easy to see that it's hard for her considering her work takes place in bars and she often gets paid in drinks. I think a lot of people can relate to this dilemma and it's refreshing to heat Kelly address it directly and pretty much shame-free. GO KELLY! Check out this video she mentions-HILAR https://youtu.be/PYYRKqBACwU More about Kelly here: http://www.kellybdwyer.com/ #comedy #mus...

DLG1630_Deborah Brown—A fresh perspective on an artist's life. And stuff about being an artist in Bushwick.

August 09, 2016 03:26 - 57 minutes

It was fun reminiscing about the newly recent "old days" in Bushwick and how things have changed. Deborah's path has taken her deeper into her work and less focused on running a space in Bushwick, culminating in her getting representation at Mike Weiss Gallery in Chelsea this coming February. It's inspiring to hear about the long road Deborah's been on and how she feels preparing for her solo show at a high-profile gallery. I did a psychotherapy session on Deborah Brown almost exactly three ...

DLG1629_PSYCHOtherapy Session with Comedian Biff Lawson

August 03, 2016 04:25 - 59 minutes

I was on vacation in Quebec so fellow RFB host took over the studio while I called in to do a therapy session with him. I think we got a lot done in a short time. Biff's folks just don't get what he does? What comedian that has parents that do, really? Their sudden move to Belize is what's brought this all into focus for Biff. http://radiofreebrooklyn.com/show/the-biff-lawson-experience/ #comedy #psychotherapy

DLG1627_Childless Dr. Lisa gets deep into some unspoken emotional issues around childbirth

July 14, 2016 06:07 - 59 minutes

I had an amazing conversation with an amazing doula, Sophie Browner. We discussed how the medical business fucks with childbirth as well as the what's up with dads in the childbirth process, #miscarriage, #abortion, #postpartum #depression and all the shit that medical people don't tell you-like that sex during childbirth is helpful. http://sophiebrowner.wix.com/sophiethedoula

DLG1626_Dr. Lisa grills Haybaby Drummer Jeremy Duvall about chicks and other stuff.

July 14, 2016 05:59 - 59 minutes

To Lisa Levy Message body Drummer Jeremy Duvall is on the couch and Dr. Lisa confronts him directly with questions about whether being a dude in a band means you get laid a lot. They also dive into some meaningful shit and why a certain obscure Byrds song affects him so much. Our own Orie GIvensRace and Ethnicity Correspondent at The Advocate magazine learns me stuff about being gay.

July 14, 2016 05:43 - 59 minutes

Orie Givens lV is the host of Radio Free Brooklyn's "Queer State-of Mind". In light of the Orlando shootings, I was feeling as if I hadn't been as emotionally aware to LGBTQ people as I would like It was pointed out to me by a friend how the media had not addressed the shooting as a hate crime and portrayed it more as terrorism. DLG1623_Christian Niedan brings Lilit Marcus, author of "Save the Assistants: A Guide for Surviving and Thriving in the Workplace," to the couch.

July 13, 2016 03:45 - 59 minutes

Human curator, editor, writer Christian Neidan brings writer, author Lilet Marcus to the shrink office to discuss her work and life. Having Christian there ads to the fun since I can quiz him on theories about Lilet. Like can you see her imposter syndrome? Does she scare away men with her forthrightness? http://lilitmarcus.tumblr.com/ http://www.nomadicpress.org/blog/?tag=Christian+Niedan

DLG1622_Fantasy Grandma. Grandma soothes the doctor and has great music.

July 13, 2016 02:09 - 59 minutes

I think I still have got an earworm listening to Fantasy Grandma's theme song. It's really charming with sort of a sophisticated childhood catch to it. "...Fantasy Grandma is coming your way...da de dum...." We had a LOVELY chat. I must say it's refreshing to have a guest who is so committed to the helping field that you wind up feeling loved, comforted and ACCEPTED without cynicism. SO weird, but in a good way, y'know what I mean, Grandchildren. Theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG...

DLG1621_ Porno Jim is a porn expert-I am not.

July 13, 2016 01:30 - 55 minutes

I learn a lot about porn from Porno Jim. Jim found out about porn at age 10 watching a video with a pal. Porno Jim is also polyamorous. This leads to a multi-level conversation about porn - Jim's childhood - and how to manage sleeping with a group of people (it's a lot of work!). Then it leads to some conflict with Porno and myself which is all part of the fun. I enjoyed hanging with Jim plus I expanded my horizons. http://pornojim.com #sex #pornography #art

DLG1620 I Envy Comedian Alison Klemp's Anger Power

June 10, 2016 00:00 - 59 minutes

I had an amazing session with Alison and got a sense what it might be like both good and bad to be brought up in a family where people expressed their anger. I wish that I had a small portion of Alison's fearlessness but it can get you arrested too.

DLG1619_Comedian Andrew Ritchie's Mother Wasn't Demanding Enough...

June 09, 2016 22:57 - 59 minutes

...But he's proud of her now! I got to flirt with Andrew at the beginning of the show which was fun and found out he like Jewish girls. We get deep after that. As Andrew says to me during the session, "You're getting me to say all sorts of things I would never normally say."

DLG1618_Brenda Ziamany talks about doing a portrait a day.

May 25, 2016 00:49 - 59 minutes

1617DLG_It's TIme for Jim Melloan to Ditch His Dad

May 20, 2016 04:47 - 59 minutes

Fellow Radio Free Brooklyn. Host, Jim Melloan is also a writer, musician and actor. Jim's dad has been the opinion columnist for The Wall Street Journal, so the idea of "dad is right" has special meaning for him (of course!) Jim has been generous with staying with his dad, but naturally, it's time to move on. Jim hosts an amazing show of chart-topping hits from 50 years ago—"50 Years Ago This Week," Listen here: http://radiofreebrooklyn.com/show/50-years-ago-this-week/ #music #psychotherapy...

DLG1615_Performer Kalan Sherrod is Oddly Fearless.

April 26, 2016 23:11 - 59 minutes

http://bedfordandbowery.com/2016/04/kalan-sherrard-beat-up-trump/# Kalan is more well known as enormous face the guy dressed as Trump who gives people a foam bat and charges them to hit him. We discover that Kalan is unique in his fearlessness. Like by demonstrating in his teens that he could hitchhike to Patagonia, his folks realized that he was a very capable young man and could manage his freedom. Kalan's childhood is not like anyone's I've ever heard of which explains how he's capable of...

DLG1614_From artist Shawn Gallagher, I learn a lot about the power of single Moms.

April 19, 2016 01:22 - 59 minutes

Message body Shawn Gallagher is a talented artist with a really good job as well as being highly functional and pretty brilliant. I wanted to know why Shawn was so enthusiastic about being on the show but so "lazy" (resistant!) about about promomting his work. Shawn is living proof that you can be brought up by a single mom, not really know your dad and still feel loved and ok with the world. Shawn told me after this session there was a lot of stuff his friends and family didn't know about hi...

DLG1613_ Photographer Artist Meryl Meisler talks about what happened...

April 17, 2016 01:15 - 37 minutes

I've know Meryl a long time now, but I've never gotten this close. I see how her early years in NYC and then her long term relationship with her now wife and family support has sustained her over the years. It's inspiring to hear how Meryl's life has turned into the recent acclaim that it has finally received now. Time Magazine includes Meryl Meisler on their list of the greatest unsung female photographers of the past century. http://www.merylmeisler.com/

March 15, 2016 05:25 - 59 minutes

Deryck is a different animal than I usually have on-AMAZING social skills! Here's a guy who's famous for his hat design collections-Miley Cyrus wore one when she hosted SNL, as well as hosting a weekly party, Strut, that celebrities like Paris Hilton mix with regular folks. Plus, he's also creator of the annual Bowie Ball. I drill down to find what makes Deyck so gifted with people. Introducing people and putting them together is an art for him. 1608DLG_Lucia Rollow: Bushwick Community Darkroom Founder + Photographer

March 09, 2016 02:20 - 59 minutes

Dad. Domestic Violence. Prison. Lucia is a warrior and create soul. She's not the first person, I've ever spoken to about the residual effects of being exposed to domestic violence as a child, but I have not had a frank conversation with a woman from this background in terms of where she is in her relationships with men and dating EVER. Thanks to Lucia, I think we can all recognize a part of ourselves in her journey and be inspired by how she's kicking ass. http://www.luciarollow.com/home.htm...

March 02, 2016 02:54 - 59 minutes

Ann Hirsch: http://www.therealannhirsch.com/ Ann is in town from LA for her show at American Medium. We really get each others art work so it makes for an in depth convo. Plus Ann;'s current show A Formidble Daughter is based on the drawings Ann made in her shrinks office from her childhood age 8-12. Pretty interesting to hear Ann talk about being in therapy at that tender age. Also Ann has been on a reality show and we talk about Post-Reality Show Syndrome which she DOES NOT have!

1604_DLG_Art Photographer Savannah Spirit and Dr. Lisa Discuss Nudity on a Personal Basis

February 12, 2016 05:48 - 59 minutes

I hate this photo of me—I think my face looks really fat and forehead shiny-oh well. Savannah Spirit started out organizing sex art shows and now she has developed her practice to where she is taking sexy photos of herself. Sure the sexy part is easy for her, but the art part is completely original, an erotic form all it's own. It was really interesting to have a direct conversation as to Savannah's experience posting erotic photos of herself. From what she described, it renewed my faith in m...

1531_DLG_Artist Rebecca Goyette takes us on a brilliant and terrifying journey.

January 01, 2016 02:29 - 1 hour

Rebecca Goyette makes work that is too original to explain in this tiny space. Salem witch trials, complex sexuality and crashing boundaries are 3 terms to help describe it. More here: http://www.rebogallery.com/ Recently, Rebecca made a feature length film which turned out more psychologically effecting than she could have imagined. In this session, Rebecca, (ok-with help from me) describes her experience in an honest and moving way. Rebecca is an old buddy of mine who I met originally becau...

1530_DLG_Kwiebaye Kotee self made woman! Director of Bushwick Film Festival

January 01, 2016 02:17 - 43 minutes

Kweibaye has a lot going for her, but she's made so much happen! She's from an Liberian immigrant family and has made so much happen. She has her shit together, but it didn't happen overnight. She inspired my lazy ass. Check her out: http://www.kweighbaye.com/ I met her at the launch for #BushwickDaily's, Katarina Koces publication, #BushwickNotebook which features Kwiebaye on the cover.

1528_DLG_Matthew Weinstein graciously returns to Dr. Lisa GAS to critique the Dr.'s skills on interviewing.

January 01, 2016 01:34 - 1 hour

I kind of wish this had gone better. Matthew Weinstein, acclaimed writer and artist agreed to come on the show (again) to help me with my on air skills. I had a bad night the night before-losing a competition at #BHQFU and was feeling low, so I felt like I didn't take control of this session as much as I would have liked to. Matthew is super talented! Check out his work at http://www.matthewweinstein.com/

1527_DLG_Together, comedian Chris Doucette and I dissect his personality.

December 11, 2015 01:35 - 1 hour

Chris Doucette started his comedy career by showing livestock at the 4H Club as a kid. I tell him that he seems really grounded for a comedian and we take it from there. David Kramer is a friend of mine and as far as I can see a successful, money making artist. David talks reality of what his life is like-(Great right now!) and we parse the ups and downs of a creative career. David told me after I soft-balled this interview with him but I'm not sure if it's countertranference or if I was just being uptight because I was nervous about a shoot the next day.

Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t_Episode 1516_Dr. Lisa analyzes comedian Amber Nelson

September 18, 2015 08:02 - 1 hour

I found Amber Nelson to be a particularly kind, open personality. As a fan of her work it was great to hang. She's dealt with a lot of shit-her family was living in Saudi Arabia when she was born and quickly had to move back to the states when something heavy happened (listen to the show if you want to know!) Because of her experience in Saudi Arabia, she really valued education here which is the reason (I think) her life has turned out so well and she's not living in the sticks where she gre...
