Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

371 episodes - English - Latest episode: 6 months ago - ★★★★ - 7 ratings

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session. https://listentodrlisa.com/ #jencatron #pauloutlaw

DLG257 Breaking down the WALL OF LIES experience with creators Tom Tenney and Phil Buehler.

November 25, 2020 15:29 - 1 hour

In case you live in a part of the world with no news coverage, on October 3, 2020, Radio Free Brooklyn erected the “Wall of Lies,” a 50-foot by 10-foot outdoor mural with the 20,000+ lies told by Donald Trump (so far) while in office, documented and fact-checked by The Washington Post. The project was conceived and executed by RFB Executive Director Tom Tenney and Bushwick artist Phil Buehler. I know Tom Tenney (our RFB station Executive Director) and Phil Buehler (my very own husband) all to...

DLG256 Chiaozzo, Maggie Avolio, and Dr.Lisa (the visual artist side), talk about making work this summer for a current exhibition at VSOP Projects

November 18, 2020 18:33 - 59 minutes

I don't usually talk about my own work that much, but I besides hosting this spectacular radio show I also have a visual art career! I have been showing my text painting series, The Thoughts in My Head for the past few years at a terrific gallery, VSOP Projects. The gallery owner/director is one of the best—Jonathan Weiskopf. The exhibition at the gallery currently is 4 solo shows, each in individual rooms. Fearing that I was the most neurotic of the group, I thought it would be fascinating t...

DLG216 Kalup Linzy talks about his life was like growing up in Stuckey, Florida and how from a small town to be a well-known, well respected artist..

November 03, 2020 15:09 - 59 minutes

Kalup Linzy Is a genuine famous artist with his work in the collections of MoMA, The Whitney, Met, Studio Museum of Harlem, a teaching gig at Harvard as well as a Kalup's’ personal dream come true: his guest appearance on General Hospital, arranged by an admirer his admirer, collaborator, and fellow actor on the show, James Franco. I had the good fortune of meeting Kalup at the recent Satellite Art Fair. The more research I did about Kalup, I became curious about how someone from a tiny town...

DLG254 David Kramer talks about the irony of Mar-A-Lago sunsets.

October 26, 2020 17:33 - 59 minutes

David Kramer and I have been friends for a long time - and he's been on the show more times than anyone - so we had a super fun time deconstructing the inspiration for David along with the levels of irony his hook rugs, currently in his solo exhibition at Freight + Volume Gallery titled Mar-A-Lago Sunsets. It's a great study of how an artist prevails under any/all circumstances. We also discuss his recent collaboration with Celine. Check out David's work on Instagram! @dkramer5000

DLG253 Comedian/Artists Lorelei Ramirez and Felipe Di Poi talk about evolving work during the pandemic.

October 21, 2020 20:24 - 59 minutes

I wandered into one of my favorite Brooklyn places, The Brick Theater and they were having a great art exhibition by some of their most hilarious, creative performers who also make art. The artists are - Fareeha Khan, Felipe Di Poi, Lorelei Ramirez, Marissa Goldman, Tawanda Gona, Tim Platt, Whitley Watson I knew Lorelei Ramirez a bit and always loved her work so I asked her and an animator, Felipe Di Poi, who's work I loved as well, to talk about how visual art has been a good outlet for them...

DLG251 I have never met a performance artist with a background like GOODW.Y.N's and it affected me.

October 07, 2020 21:48 - 59 minutes

GOODW.Y.N’s human force is palpable, even when you’re not in the same room as her. She is a warrior in every sense of the word. Equality is her mission and you can’t ignore her. She was born in 1980 in Bedford Stuyvesant to a mother on welfare. Always a writer, she was a good kid that eventually enlisted in the army to get out of her house and move on with her life. Her depth of experience, her access and ability to harness it is remarkably powerful—I haven’t seen anything like it to be hones...

DLG250 Dr. Lisa talks with musician Steele Kratt about his music, girls and his relationship with his mother.

October 07, 2020 21:03 - 59 minutes

Steele is an extremely talented, charming and handsome musician. He is a founder as well as the drummer for The Britneys, but during lockdown he is upstate focusing on his solo project which he thankfully started pre-lockdown. Steele shares some of his fantastic new singles in the beginning and end of this show. In my position as a comfortably old enough to be his mother self-proclaimed psychotherapist, I was able to dig into the reasons behind Steele’s completely single status until this pas...

DLG249_ He was there! Anthony Haden Guest talks about Studio 54, Plato's Retreat, Xenon.

September 15, 2020 21:01 - 59 minutes

I knew who Anthony Haden Guest was a long time before I actually got to meet him. He has written seminal books on Studio 54, The Last Party the art world, True Colors, and has written so much more in more books and major publications. Over the past few years, I have had the pleasure of getting to know him and even having the opportunity to "psychoanalyze" him for a project I did for BAM. I was thrilled when he recently agreed to let me interview him about his Studio 54 experiences and his per...

DLG247 David B. Frye talks about his art and his own family history with Slavery.

September 07, 2020 20:28 - 59 minutes

I've been a huge David B. Frye fan since I first laid eyes on his work at Christopher Stout Projects. From a press release by curator Mary Gagler, "Frye presents the unbridled exploitation of colonial power and the unchecked passions of founding fathers and contrasts these with ideals of free love and individual agency. While other bodies of work more directly approach his own family’s history as slaves, Frye critiques America’s internal diplomacy towards white slave owners and their attempt t...

DLG210 Comedian Michele Balan is a complex subject and a joy on any microphone.

September 03, 2020 22:52 - 59 minutes

I saw Michele Balan perform a comedy set recently and I was blown away. It made me wonder about what a career path for someone in my age group with comedy chops/success, like Michele, would have been like to travel on. To be a successful women in comedy clubs in 90's must have been... well I just can't imagine. Therefore, I was thrilled when she agreed to be on Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit. In doing research in preparation to have Michele on my show, I came across a podcast she had done with another...

Jon has coped with his trauma in a long-term, extremely positive way, which allows him to have a great marriage and highly productive and...

DLG245 Howard Halle, Time Out New York Chief Art Critic of past 25 years talks with Dr. Lisa.

July 24, 2020 19:55 - 1 hour

Howard Halle is one of the least pretentious people I personally have interacted with in the name of art. He is honest, charming and has a specific insider view of the rise and future of the art world. He gave pulitzer prize winning art critic, Jerry Saltz his first staff job as a critic. One of Howards skills is identifying talent and managing a great department of art writers. As this is his last month with TONY, I thought he would be more nostalgic than he was. My personal take is he is lo...

DLG234 Actor/comedian Fariaz Rabbani shares the emotional experience of growing up as a DACA recipient.

July 20, 2020 14:34 - 59 minutes

Fariaz's Facebook post hit a nerve with many and drew me in to request a therapy session with actor and comedian Fariaz Rabbani. This session with him helped me understand the emotional trauma of being an undocumented immigrant. It also made me realize how there are people around me that i know that can be in this situation and I might not even realize it. FARIAZ RABBANI writes: Being undocumented - especially while growing up here, is not something I'd wish on my enemy. It's psychological t...

DLG243 Kay Edwards talks about the word of God in a way that's new to me.

June 30, 2020 17:53 - 59 minutes

Kay Hosts a great show, What would Kay Say? on Radio Free Brooklyn, every Sunday, 8am. She takes the word of God and uses it as way to guide you through everyday life. Her combined talent of public speaking and original way of imparting the word of God transcends tradition religious messaging and makes it broadly relatable, philosophical and thought-provoking. Kay spent years studying traditional pa...

DLG1721 Dr. Lisa meets one of her musician heros-Bill Popp!

June 30, 2020 17:36 - 59 minutes

In the 1990's I was addicted to listening to Bill Popp and the Tapes—the music was the background to my frantic art-making. I went to see him play live-the whole 9 yards! So when he agreed to come on my show-I was a bit star-struck. I could not have imagined a more down to earth, dedicated and continually active musician fronting a band. We talk a lot about his background; the influence his parents individual passing had on him. Also he has a girlfriend that likes belly dancing! That's me wea...

DLG 239_Dr. Lisa learns musician/keyboardist Sean Spada's songs work on a bunch of levels

May 29, 2020 15:44 - 59 minutes

Well, I'm not a music expert, but I am a fan of Sean Spada. Sean currently plays keys in NO ICE and CHERCH, and is also performing and recording a new set of songs as a solo artist. Other projects of his have included Deathrow Tull, the Nuclears, The Bottom Dollars and Michael T & the Vanities. In this session, we examine Sean's thinking behind his music/writing, which is, I have to say, fairly philosophical After that heavy discussion, he paints an entertaining picture of what it's like to b...

Tom is the architect and main man behind Radio Free Brooklyn-he pretty much knows all 100+ of us. He is loved, respected and occasionally feared. This session was a great opportunity to look back on the past 5 years to dig into how Radio Free Brooklyn has changed his life (and many people's lives, including his co-director and RFB Board President, Rob Pritchard). I've been a fan of writer/journalist/cartoonist/artist, Anthony Haden-Guest, since I read his book True Colors , the definitive behind-the-scenes book about the art world, when it came out in 1998. I have psychoanalyzed Anthony on several other occasions, so it was have him talk and answer questions about this new book of cartoons and verse as well, published by the Orange Art Foundation. He even read some verse out loud! Anthony is an acute observer, charming with a great sense of humor. It ...

DLG236 Nothing can keep Claudi Love of Pinc Louds from exuding joy.

May 06, 2020 20:22 - 59 minutes

NOTE: If you haven't heard my session with Claudi and his bandmate Bear from May 2017, I highly recommend it! It was only 2 years after he moved from Puerto Rico to NYC. I connected with him when he was playing in the Delancy Street Station. ENJOY! https://traffic.megaphone.fm/RADIO7173962960.mp3 I feel like I should have paid Claudi Love for this session. April 22, 2020 16:04 - 59 minutes

DLG228 Theresa Buchheister, artistic director of the Brick Theater talks about her development as a creative being growing up in Kansas.

March 11, 2020 17:57 - 58 minutes

Theresa Buckeheister is one of those people who has so much innate creative capacity that she would be making a mark if she had grown up in Siberia, let alone a small town in Kansas—she would have found her way to NYC! She's from a family that she loves, but is not like her. This was an easy session as Theresa really drew me in, was self-aware and open speaking about how she came to be who she is - a New York Times worthy artistic director of the Brick Theater. DLG227 Photographer Meryl Meisler and filmmaker/musician Dylan Mars Greenberg revive their relationship after 10 years. Also Dr. Lisa cries.

February 27, 2020 00:06 - 59 minutes

Well this is a strange session—but on so many levels. First of all, Meryl Meisler was Dylan’s digital art teacher when he was in 7th Grade. They haven’t seen each other in ten years-since school really-and meet up IRL in the studio. Loved seeing them together and hearing in their reflections how they affected each other. Meryl got Dylan into her first film festival as a kid! The other part of this session is between Dylan and myself, with Meryl taking the shrink role. I had offended Dylan abo...

DLG220 Artist Sharilyn Neidhardt is very upfront with me.

January 03, 2020 20:49 - 59 minutes

I know Sharilyn pretty well, so when I ask her to explain why someone had referred to me as "intense," she was able to articulate pretty well why without upsetting me too much. We then turn the session to her where we discover that she needs to change to a more emotionally and culturally evolved primary care physician and she talks about her new interest in possibly dating on the internets. We come up with a motivating challenge for her. Soon, hopefully, she'll be back with positive results! ...

DLG217 Only Jacq the Stripper is as open, honest and funny as her book, The Beaver Show. And I learned stuff!

December 04, 2019 22:44 - 59 minutes

One of the best , most entertaining books I audiobooked this year, is a memoir by Jacq The Stripper titled: The Beaver Show-she reads it herself., it's SO SMART and HILARIOUS. In this session with Jacq, I LEARNED a lot! I thought I knew something about strippers/stripping, but I don't think I've gotten to talk to someone who's as articulate, positive and empowering about it, as Jacq is. We had a deep, satisfying as well as amusing! conversation about sexual currency. For example we discussed ...

November 29, 2019 18:41 - 59 minutes

I first met Leslie Goshko in 2008 when we were both producing our own shows at Ochi’s Lounge, a great club run by the fabulous now-owner of Q.E.D., Kambri Crews in the basement of COMIX the biggest comedy club in NYC in those days. Leslie and I support each other’s work consistently and it REALLY HELPS. The last time Leslie visited the station was exactly 3 years ago this month so she returns to update up. 3 years ago, Leslie had just started performing at Loser’s Lounge at Joe’s Pub as well ...

October 29, 2019 15:00 - 59 minutes

I first saw John F. O'Donnell performing years ago in a basement in the bowels of Bushwick and his talent really spoke to me. I’ve followed his career and he’s just finished 5 years as a correspondent on Redacted Tonight. We got him back in the hood and most importantly back weekly live at Cobra Club! Live From Outer Space, every Friday night, 9pm, is a great, authentic, comedy show where you can see well-known comedians for cheap, he often co-hosted with the awesome Eric Bergstrom. John is u...

DLG193 Artist Shona McAndrew and her boyfriend, Stuart Lantry, have a beautifully large relationship.

September 18, 2019 17:38 - 53 minutes
