Disorder - Genesis 3:1-24

September 22, 2015 19:46 - 32 minutes - 29.6 MB

Every language has a word for evil. It is pervades and invades every aspect of creation. In the biblical view, evil is essentially the evidence of a disordered universe. God has designed the universe to function in a certain way. When you follow the design plan, you flourish. When you disregard it, you wither. Evil is the consequence of disregarding the design plan. Evil is a universe in disorder.

Sin

September 11, 2015 21:50 - 35 minutes - 32.6 MB

The central truth that helps us understand God's design plan is that the biblical God is Creator and humans (and all the universe with them), creation. Sin, in essence, is a disregard for these basic truths. When viewed in this way, Sin expresses itself in two ways: pride, where I take the place of God and/or self-contempt, where I undervalue the goodness with which God has made me and the rest of creation.

Moral Design

September 03, 2015 09:56 - 30 minutes - 28 MB

God has created the universe in line with his own character and nature. God's creation flourishes when it functions according to his design plan. This principle is applied to the moral design of the universe. We ultimately learn what the moral design of creation, what is right or wrong, good or evil as we are rooted in relationship with the Creator God of the Bible.

Design (Genesis 1 & 2)

August 24, 2015 16:16 - 29 minutes - 27.2 MB

God has created this universe and designed it to function in line with his own moral nature. He has designed us humans to freely know him, love him, be loved by him and enjoy him forever. We flourish when we choose to follow the design plan and wither when we neglect it.

Four responses to the Word of God

April 22, 2015 09:07 - 43 minutes - 39.8 MB

Jesus told parables so that we could easily understand spiritual truth – right?  Wrong!  He told parables to reveal truth to those who believe and conceal it from those who don’t.  That’s what makes the “Parable of the sower” either the easiest or most difficult parable to figure out.  Are you ready to join James this week and have a go?

Escaping judgement, embracing mercy

February 09, 2015 10:12 - 36 minutes - 33.8 MB

The Old Testament book of Micah was written in the 8th century before the birth of Christ but its message is as relevant to us today as it was to Micah's original hearers.  In the first of a three-part series, Florence unpacks chapters 1 and 2 where God exposes and judges the sins of His unfaithful people but extends mercy to His faithful people.

The Undivided Heart (Haggai 2.10-19)

February 04, 2015 09:31 - 35 minutes - 32.4 MB

The loyalties of the believer are often pulled in all directions. The Lord calls us to be devoted to him with an undivided heart. His assurance is that when we make him our priority we gain not only him but also our life. His warning is that that if we make something other than God our priority, we risk losing him and everything else. As Augustine reminded the church, if Christ is not valued above all, he is not valued at all.

Born into the Body of Christ

January 26, 2015 11:40 - 37 minutes - 34.2 MB

The Church is the family of God into which we are born when we come to faith in Christ. Ultimately it is impossible to come to full maturity as a Christian without participation in the Church. This is because Jesus is always followed in the company of other believers. Isolating ourselves from the people of God is not just difficult, but it in fact is dangerous to our spiritual life. For all its weaknesses, the Church is still the main means through which God tells the world of his love for t...

Cultivating Hope (Romans 5.3-5)

January 22, 2015 17:06 - 41 minutes - 38.3 MB

The biblical idea of of hope refers to a true and confident expectation we have in God that no matter what situation we walk into, with Christ Jesus we have all we need to rise and meet its demands; and because of Christ Jesus that we can confidently expect that the ultimate outcome will be good. Such hope is difficult to exercise. But it can be cultivated. It emerges as a consequence of a character forged through patient perseverance through inconvenience and even suffering.

Surprised by God (Matthew 1:18-24)

December 15, 2014 17:52 - 38 minutes - 35.5 MB

Something of the surprise of the Christmas message is lost with the yearly repetition of this wonderful account. The events of Christmas viewed through the eyes of Joseph give us an opportunity to see the Christmas account for how remarkable it really was. Joseph's first surprise is the shocking news of his fiance Mary's pregnancy. The next surprise is even more amazing when an angelic visitor turns up in a dream. But, the message the angel leaves Joseph is still more incredible; that Mary i...

What to pray... when you don't know what to pray (Part 1)

October 28, 2014 14:20 - 35 minutes - 32 MB

We don't always know what to pray.  Jesus' disciples had the same problem so He taught them what is traditionally known as the Lord's Prayer.  In the first of a two-part series, Florence unpacks the first half of this prayer with its focus on God's name, kingdom and will. Why not allow this model prayer to shape your own prayers?

Four responses to the Son of God

October 20, 2014 13:32 - 38 minutes - 34.8 MB

It’s not possible to be neutral about Jesus Christ.  When we are confronted with him we are forced to make a decision either for or against him.  In chapter 3 of Mark’s Gospel Jesus is very clearly declared and revealed to be the Son of God.  How did the people respond?  Well, amazingly, three groups rejected him in different ways and only one group became his disciples.  Join James this week as he looks at this very challenging part of the Bible but be warned - you’ll have to make a decisio...

God works for good

October 14, 2014 09:40 - 38 minutes - 35.4 MB

Of the many insights learned from the life of Joseph, one that stands out is that in all circumstances, God works for the good of those who love him (Romans 8.28). Events from Joseph's life teach us that God takes our unremarkable moments, our victories and our tragedies and brings about good for those who trust him.

Be Fruitful and Multiply (Part 3)

October 14, 2014 09:38 - 37 minutes - 34 MB

In this last of a 3-part series that traces the storyline of the Bible, we see how the Old Testament concludes by anticipating a figure who will do what Israel could not do, mediate blessing to the whole earth. This person, the New Testament tells us is the person of Jesus Christ, who through his suffering and death becomes the agent of God's blessing throughout the earth. His followers are then commissioned to continue what he has started, empowered by God. The ultimate design of creation ...

Be Fruitful and Multiply (Pt 2)

September 29, 2014 10:34 - 38 minutes - 35.3 MB

Vijay continues his Bible survey tracing the grand theme of blessing throughout the Bible. When God created humans, he created them to be fruitful and to multiply, that they be blessed and be a blessing. But, the earliest accounts in the Bible show that humans are 'fruitful', that they do 'multiply', but in evil not in righteousness. In today's sermon, Vijay traces the story starting from Abraham to the end of the OT. In Abraham, God promises to bless Abraham and make him a blessing to all t...

Be Fruitful and Multiply

September 14, 2014 16:52 - 34 minutes - 31.3 MB

Vijay starts a short series that traces the storyline of the Bible as God's commitment to bless creation. In this first sermon he looks at the story beginning from creation to the account at Babel. When God creates humans, he blesses them with the capacity to flourish, enjoy God's creation and enjoy healthy relationship with others. This capacity for blessedness is ultimately rooted in a right relationship with God. But not only are humans to enjoy such blessing, they are also to be instrume...
