Disorder - Genesis 3:1-24

Every language has a word for evil. It is pervades and invades every aspect of creation. In the biblical view, evil is essentially the evidence of a disordered universe. God has designed the universe to function in a certain way. When you follow the design plan, you flourish. When you disregard it, you wither. Evil is the consequence of disregarding the design plan. Evil is a universe in disorder.

Sin

The central truth that helps us understand God's design plan is that the biblical God is Creator and humans (and all the universe with them), creation. Sin, in essence, is a disregard for these basic truths. When viewed in this way, Sin expresses itself in two ways: pride, where I take the place of God and/or self-contempt, where I undervalue the goodness with which God has made me and the rest of creation.  

Moral Design

God has created the universe in line with his own character and nature. God's creation flourishes when it functions according to his design plan. This principle is applied to the moral design of the universe. We ultimately learn what the moral design of creation, what is right or wrong, good or evil as we are rooted in relationship with the Creator God of the Bible.

Design (Genesis 1 & 2)

God has created this universe and designed it to function in line with his own moral nature. He has designed us humans to freely know him, love him, be loved by him and enjoy him forever. We flourish when we choose to follow the design plan and wither when we neglect it.

The Undivided Heart (Haggai 2.10-19)

The loyalties of the believer are often pulled in all directions. The Lord calls us to be devoted to him with an undivided heart. His assurance is that when we make him our priority we gain not only him but also our life. His warning is that that if we make something other than God our priority, we risk losing him and everything else. As Augustine reminded the church, if Christ is not valued above all, he is not valued at all.

Cultivating Hope (Romans 5.3-5)

The biblical idea of of hope refers to a true and confident expectation we have in God that no matter what situation we walk into, with Christ Jesus we have all we need to rise and meet its demands; and because of Christ Jesus that we can confidently expect that the ultimate outcome will be good. Such hope is difficult to exercise. But it can be cultivated. It emerges as a consequence of a character forged through patient perseverance through inconvenience and even suffering.
