In this episode of the podcast Mike and Byron walk you through the finer points of the squat and dead lift and how they relate and are decided upon by the earlier foundations episodes.

We discussed the relevance of each lift whether or not a person is just generally trying to get stronger for healthy ageing, as well as the importance for strength training aspects with athletes as well as appearance/physique considerations.

We give an accurate description of what each lift looks like when performed.

We also discuss our preferred way of performing each of these exercises.

The squat we favour the Lowbar variant of the squat.
This enables the lifter to be more leaned over as they squat down.

In doing so it helps us to fulfil our criteria of training the most amount of muscle mass over the greatest effective range of motion, compared to the more upright back angle seen in the high bar or front squat.

Many times in gyms it is possible to see the squat done as a high bar variant.

We explain why in our opinion this should be a sub optimal use of this variance in comparison to the Lowbar version.
We also explained how to perform the Lowbar version and why it is superior to the high bar version.

We take time to discuss and explain the correct performance of the lift as well as common problems that are encountered with this exercise we also describe how to spot things on Instagram or in video that a tell-tale signs of the lift being performed incorrectly, sometimes even under supposed professional guidance!

We go on to explain in the deadlifts a similar set of circumstances, the relevance of the lift for all parties as well as how to perform it correctly and how to identify when it is being performed incorrectly.

This includes common errors that can occur that you can spot in your own form videos or when you are viewing lifts done at gyms.

We finish each section with a discussion on how to modify these exercises and when to do so.
