If you are going to Podcast, JUST PODCAST! – PHD121

June 13, 2019 13:40 - 7 minutes - 6.82 MB

The single best way to make sure your Title is what you want it to be EVERYWHERE is to use it as the blog title (assuming you are using WordPress to publish your podcast) or the TITLE box in whatever podcast service you are using.   The Best way to make sure your "shownotes" are the same everywhere is to use it in the main post content box. There are, in Theory, ways to specify for different places different titles, post content and whatnot, but Apps do not have to follow those extra tags.  ...

Breaking News from PHD News – Apple is making changes to Apple Podcasts

June 05, 2019 02:32 - 2 minutes - 2.42 MB

This is Wednesday's episode of my Alexa News Breif Podcast Help Desk news. In addition to killing off "iTunes" on the Mac Desktop, Apple is also changing up the categories.  (Later this summer) Also adding some search and photo settings. Your podcast companies did not know about this ahead of time and will (the good ones anyway) be up to speed by the time this gets implmented at Apple.

Changing Your Podcast’s Title – PHD120

May 28, 2019 14:48 - 7 minutes - 7.28 MB

One of the questions I get a lot is how to change your podcast's title. In this short episode, I explain how to do it and why you might want to.  Also some of the things that won't change because you change your title. As some of you might remember, this podcast used to be called "Podcasting Tech Coach" Back in Episode 13, I changed it to Podcast Help Desk Here is a link to that episode PHD013 - Rebranding This podcast is Sponsored by Blubrry.com - Hosting - Stats - Web and More!

6 Things Every Podcaster Should Know About Podcasting – PHD119

March 21, 2019 00:18 - 21 minutes - 19.9 MB

For those that do not know me, I’ve been podcasting since 2005 and made every single mistake in the book. I’ve also worked in support for a podcast company for 10 years (as of next month).  I think I might know what I’m talking about, at least about these topics. Know that Podcasting is  PULL technology. All apps, subscribers, and directories PULL your RSS feed from wherever it lives. That means when you publish your podcast, there will be a delay between publishing and when that episode m...

Apple Backs Down on Episode Numbers in Episode Titles – PHD118

March 01, 2019 18:33 - 9 minutes - 8.44 MB

Apple seems to have backed down on Episode Numbers in Episode Titles.  Here is a partial quote from the email they sent out... We’ve received a lot of questions about metadata best practices on Apple Podcasts. We want to provide more details and clarification as you think about improving your show’s metadata. Your Show Won’t Be Removed for Having Episode Numbers in Episode Titles Starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, we introduced modern RSS tags to improve podcast metadata. These tags in...

The End of Episode Numbers in Apple Podcasts? – PHD117

February 28, 2019 03:11 - 16 minutes - 15.6 MB

Apple sent a letter to podcasters today (It was a bulk email NOT just to you). The big takeaway is that you need to remove episode numbers from your titles. I have a way of doing that and keeping them in your blog titles (as you can see above) and Keep Apple happy. Here is what they sent: Dear Podcast Provider, To improve your experience with Apple Podcasts, we want to share the following information and updates. Optimize Your Show’s Metadata The metadata of your show is your product pack...

Bad Podcast Advice? Not one size fits all – PHD116

February 24, 2019 14:53 - 16 minutes - 15.1 MB

Is all Podcast advice applicable to your goals in podcasting?  Be careful about who you are getting your advice from. Do they have an agenda? (most do) Do they match YOUR goals in podcasting?    Not everyone wants advertisers.  A lot of advice given on the Facebook groups is not applicable to the person sitting next to the water heater in a basement studio. This is my little rant/brain dump on the subject of advice. Be sure to listen to the last episode with Paul Culligan as well.

Spotify + Anchor + Gimlet Media - What it might mean to Independent Podcasters

February 07, 2019 14:00 - 16 minutes - 15.6 MB

What does this accusition mean to the average independent Podcaster? Not much is my guess. This is just me doing a bit of a brain-dump about the big news of yesterday. Is it good for Podcasting in General? Is it Good/Bad for Indy podcasters? Who knows? We will see how it shakes out. Also, I talk about a new App called Himalaya You can go over there and claim your show. I'm testing it out as a listening app. I will let you know what I think in a future episode. In the show I couldn't rememb...

January 19, 2019 19:05 - 32 minutes - 29.7 MB

Elise Escobar stopped by the Podcast Help Desk a while back and we had a great conversation about podcasting (what else?) and what she is doing in podcasting. Elsie is a Hall of Famer, Podcaster and Social Media at Libsyn - The Feed and She Podcasts.  I also talk about Podcast Help Desk News Alexa skill (and now REAL podcast).

Separate Blog Posts and Podcast Posts

December 14, 2018 13:41 - 12 minutes - 11.3 MB

Do you want to separate your blog posts from your podcast posts on your website?   It might be a bad idea. First - How to do it if you really really want to in WordPress Create a category for the podcast.  DO NOT USE "podcast" as a category. Enable Category Podcasting in PowerPress Settings (at the bottom of each setting page) In the Category Podcasting menu (found under PowerPress in the sidebar) tick the box that says "Strict Categories" Save settings. Back in the category podcasti...

The Technical Side of Podcast Promotion

October 18, 2018 12:34 - 25 minutes - 23.4 MB

1. Never Promote something you do not own.   Send people to your website and then give them all the choices you can reasonably. Apple 🍎 Google Podcasts

I got to chat with my old friend and podcast pioneer, Evo Terra. We talk a bit about the good old days of podcasting and some about what is going on now.  Just a couple of old guys chatting it up. Episode Level Artwork - Where does it show?

September 05, 2018 10:22 - 10 minutes - 9.77 MB

Episode level images. Only some apps use the images and those apps use different images if they do. Here is a list from an experiment I did on my podcast Mike Dell's World. Episode 308 has episode level images. One image is embedded in the mp3 file in the iD3 tags. It is white with red writing. The other image is in the tag on the episode level in the RSS feed. It's green with white writing. Results: Apple Podcasts - Does not use either image. Just the main artwork for the feed. (But doe...

Apple Podcasts is getting picky

August 18, 2018 15:07 - 19 minutes - 17.5 MB

It seems that Apple is getting more picky about Titles and Author tags in Podcast Feeds. Titles should be just "the title" like - Podcast Help Desk. Not "Podcast Help Desk | The best place to learn to podcast like Dave Jackson and Daniel J. Lewis" Also, the Author tag should be: Mike Dell Not "Mike Dell, Talking about podcasting like Zig Zigler, Tony Robbins and Pat Flynn talk about business" In other words, use the tags for what they are for, not for some gray-hat SEO within Apple Podcast...

Podcast Help Desk Hijacked! – PHDspecialReport

June 30, 2018 19:42 - 9 minutes - 9.2 MB

CastBox.fm seems to have hijacked a bunch of feeds. If you are listing on CastBox, please visit PodcastHelpDesk.com and make sure you are subcibed to the real thing and not some cheap copy of the shows I put out. I have a website for each of my shows for a reason! I don't mind at all that someone lists my shows on their directory, app, site or whatever, but DO NOT REMOVE the links to MY site! That is a violation of my rights as a content creator. I don't think castbox.fm was TRYING to hijack...

Google Podcasts and Denon DN-300R test recording

June 21, 2018 15:20 - 4 minutes - 4.36 MB

This is the first test recording using the New Denon DN-300R recorder.  Having the digital recorder mounted in the rack and always hooked up seems to be a better plan (for me) than using a portable recorder as a backup. I also talk briefly about the new Google Podcasts "app" on Android.

Podcast Passion

January 27, 2018 20:36 - 22 minutes - 20.8 MB

I've been having a few things on my mind so I figured rather than write it out and rant on Facebook, I would flip on the mic and just speak it. This is a somewhat different episode. It's me rambling on a bit about Passion for podcasting. Also about learning your craft. Even the techy parts. The main things I tried to get across is this: Learn how this stuff works. Not the super geeky bits, but the basics. Spend the little bit of time it takes to understand what is supposed to happen when yo...

Recording an Episode

December 02, 2017 15:52 - 23 minutes - 10.6 MB

Today I talk about recording your episodes. It's an off the top of my head episode about how I record, some tips for recording. The main points are: 1. Find some quiet time in a quiet space. 2. Allow enough time for re-dos and editing (while it's fresh). 3. Don't overthink it. 4. Get comfortable with the tech and talking on the mic. 5. Don't be afraid to do 2 or 3 retakes if needed. I also tell you about how I started a new show (Fast Food History) and how it's a bit out of my comfort zone...

Recording Equipment for Your Podcast

November 08, 2017 16:08 - 23 minutes - 10.7 MB

News: Blubrry/RawVoice has acquired Cast Feed Validator (castfeedvalidator.com) Recording Equipment You do not need anything a smartphone to start podcasting.  Some people have good luck with just a smartphone and if done right, they can record a good show with just that. Microphones.  I suggest NOT getting a USB Condenser mic  Go for a dynamic mic.  ATR2100 is a good starter mic if you have to use USB.  You can go with a more expensive microphone and use a USB interface. Mixer -  You ...

Why Does Real Podcast Hosting Cost So Much More Than Soundcloud?

July 29, 2017 16:36 - 33 minutes - 15.5 MB

News: Messengers movie available for Pre-order at iTunes Soundcloud is dying.  Run for your lives!  (really, make other plans if you are on soundcloud). Audioboom makes deal with Deezer (or is it the other way around?) ------------- Q: Why is XXX (Blubrry, Libsyn, Spreaker) so much more expensive than Soundcloud? A: Because, businesses that host podcasts have to buy bandwidth.  Bandwidth costs money.  If you charge less than it costs you and don’t make a profit, the business won't ...

LAUNCH! Your Podcast – PQH013

January 12, 2017 21:16 - 5 minutes - 2.43 MB

Don't fall for all the "launch" strategies that people are trying to sell you. Just "START" your podcast. To get into iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and other places, you only need 1 podcast episode in your feed. Not 3, 5, 7 or whatever, just one. START your podcast and don't LAUNCH it.

What are ShowNotes? – PQH012

January 03, 2017 13:48 - 4 minutes - 2.37 MB

Shownotes are anything in this part of my post. Wherever you are seeing this, this is the show notes. They are the main content area in your blog post. Podcasting is just Blogging with media. So, no matter how you are doing your RSS feed, you are blogging. To get an episode you make a post. What you write in the main content area of that post, is your Show Notes.

The 12 Things you should NOT do in 2017 – PHD094

December 22, 2016 23:05 - 38 minutes - 17.7 MB

1. DO NOT Host your mp3 files on your own webserver Hosting your files on a webserver is the single quickest way to get kicked off of your web hosting server. Plus, if you get popular at all, your mp3 downloads will compete with your website and your RSS feed. It’s simply not a good idea. 2. DO NOT Use Feedburner (or feedblitz or any other 3rd party RSS feed service) We have beaten this dead horse but I get calls every week from someone who is on feedburner and something goes wrong. Elimin...

News: Spotify NOT buying soundcloud after all Was your show canceled by the Podcast Authority? --------------------- Listener Question Q: Is a Blue Yeti a good microphone to start out with? A: NO Now, to be fair, the Blue Yeti is a nice microphone and would be a great mic for someone that has a very quiet recording environment and/or is willing to put in the time to learn how to use it properly. Is it the best? No, is it the worst? Sometimes. -------------------- What is a podcast? ...

New and/or Noteworthy – PQH9

October 12, 2016 10:00 - 5 minutes - 2.64 MB

Don't fall for the HYPE out there about podcasting and iTunes New & Noteworthy. it's all hype. Just post your first episode and go from there. There is no need to "LAUNCH" with more than 1 episode. Just make content, do your own thing and promote it. The rest will come.

Rebranding Your Show – PQH8

October 11, 2016 02:43 - 5 minutes - 2.56 MB

Rebranding your show is something you can do as a podcaster if your show changes topic a bit, or you just get tired of the name. This podcast was rebranded with this episode. It's not Podcast Quick Hits - By PHD. It will likely just be Podcast Quick Hits soon, but that's what I did here. I changed the artwork int he feed, and the title of the feed and it took about 8 hours for iTunes to pick up the change. And I'm going to watch the other directories and see how long that took, but I figure ...

Category Podcasting Revisited – PHDQH5

October 02, 2016 10:00 - 4 minutes - 2.39 MB

Since episode 2 of Quick Hits, things have changed in the category podcasting world with PowerPress. I've changed my tune a bit and think that Category Podcasting is OK now. Still not as easy as single site / Single podcast podcasting, but very useable. If you want to have more than one RSS feed from your WordPress site, category podcasting is now the way to go.

iTunes Slow To Update Podcast Listings and More News – PHD087

June 09, 2016 19:20 - 20 minutes - 18.9 MB

Tunes Listings for Podcasts are updating slowly It's a known problem at apple. They are having issues keeping listings updated. They know about it and are working on it. The iTunes store listing and what appears in your feed are two different things. People that subscribe to your feed in iTunes will get the new episodes as you post them but the listing at iTunes can lag by a few days (or up to a week or so) behind your feed. This is normal. People get the wrong impression that your RSS fee...

Is It A Good Idea To Put Your Podcast On Vacation? – PHD086

May 21, 2016 18:11 - 10 minutes - 4.72 MB

The answer to that question is... I don't know, but I'm going to try it for the summer. That's right, Podcast Help Desk is on Vacation. I'm taking the summer *mostly* off from this podcast. Instead of trying to put out an episode every Friday during the busy, project filled summer, I'm going to just say, the episodes will come out when they come out. My plan is to write more on this site. Podcast news, Tips, Tricks and other tidbits. AND, I will put out some episodes as I get them done, or ...
