In this week’s episode of Negotiation in Real Life, I speak with Elaine Abery, the principal of Unravelling Red Tape.  Elaine has worked in and with the Associations sector since 2011. She worked for the Property Council of Australia and Private Healthcare Australia before setting up Unravelling Red Tape to help a broader base of clients with government relations, policy and advocacy. Before that, she worked in law design at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), conducting regular consultations with the associations sector.

Elaine’s favourite achievement while working for the ATO was having a formal complaint made against her for impersonating a government employee, as “no government employee is that happy”.

Elaine is passionate about working with associations and government to inform and improve government decision-making and create win-win-win solutions… a win for the industry/profession, a win for government and a win for the Australian community.

In this episode, we talk about:

the importance of breaking down a negotiation into achievable sub-parts
tips for negotiating with government
managing your language for optimal results
dealing with obstructionist negotiators
cultivating patience in negotiations

... and much much more.
