Kids, what are we watching tonight?

241 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 2 years ago -

A father and two daughters review films together, and that's when the arguing starts. Usually its me (Dad) trying to get the girls to watch (what I consider) classic films from the 70's, 80's and 90's, but we love all movies, so we cover loads of stuff, new and old. Like you, we want to be entertained, and my hope is that, not only do we entertain you, but the films I pick entertain the girls as well....or I never hear the end of it. Join us as I try to educate them, and they try to stop me forcing 'rubbish old films' on them. Find all our social media and main podcast platforms here - https://linktr.ee/kwawwtpodcast

Daddy discusses Dune (2021)

November 22, 2021 06:00 - 29 minutes - 20.1 MB

Last year I read the book Dune and compared it to the 1984 movie, and it just so happened the first trailer for the new version of Dune came out, so I spoke about that too.  If your interested, you can find my original Dune episode is here - in it I go into the story a bit more and where I though the new version would end. In this episode I talk about Denis Villeneuve's version, how it compares to what I can remember happens in the book, and what this does right, and wrong, compared to the ...

We discuss Total Recall (1990)

November 19, 2021 10:00 - 35 minutes - 24.1 MB

Once upon a time ...... A man went to have a memory of a holiday imprinted in his mind...and then Isla lost track of what was happening!!  No seriously.  She had NO IDEA what was going on!! It's still one of the greatest "is it real/isn't it?" movies of all time.  Is Doug Quaid a construction worker having a schizoid embolism after having a memory implant, or is he actually a spy from Mars, sent to Earth to infiltrate the resistance on Mars after going for a memory implant that ERASES the p...

Holiday Special #6 - Mad Max : Fury Road (2015)

November 15, 2021 06:00 - 50 minutes - 34.6 MB

Once upon a time ...... A  woman went for a drive with some stolen property.  She picked up a man, a Mad Man, and together they tried to get to freedom.  However, having driven so far away, they turned round and drove back, much to the surprise of their pursuers!! The greatest action movie ever, or the most pointless road trip ever?  This week we discuss Nieve's holiday movie Mad Max : Fury Road.  As per usual we have Uncle Argyle telling us a story, Bang For Your Buck, Where Have I Seen Th...

We utterly spoil the Eternals.

November 11, 2021 13:00 - 1 hour - 45.9 MB

Once Upon A Time ...... There were a team of immortal superhero's who were sent to protect the Earth. Last week we went to the cinema to see Marvels latest offering, and today we ruin it.  Honestly, no stone is left unturned, no spoiler is left .... unspoiled. We talk sexiest team, the post credit scenes, and how cows are born.  On top of all that we bash Spiderman, who's power is rubbish and why the deviants feel ripped off.  Its a MONSTER MARVEL DISCUSSION, and if you enjoyed the show ...

Holiday Special #5 - Vanquish

November 08, 2021 06:00 - 37 minutes - 25.5 MB

Once upon a time ...... A family walked into HMV and bought movies they'd never seen before.  They took them on holiday, watched them, then talked about them.  Today we discuss Isla's pick - VANQUISH. They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but does that also apply to DVD's?  Having struck out with Hummingbird last holiday, Isla tried to redeem herself by choosing a film staring Morgan Freeman, because Morgan Freeman would never make a bad film - would he? Does she make up for last hol...

The 2021 Islay Holiday Movie Challenge

November 04, 2021 06:00 - 13 minutes - 9 MB

Last year we came up with a brilliant idea, by our standards, for a Holiday Movie Challenge.  Each of us would buy a movie we had never seen before - it could be old, new, Western, SciFi....WHATEVER.  The only rule was it had to be age appropriate.  We would then reveal our movies, watch them and then do an episode on each one. This year, we're doing it again (because we didn't have any better ideas), so this is our movie reveal episode.  We will be releasing episodes on each film over the...

We're discussing John Carpenters Halloween (1978)

October 31, 2021 13:00 - 1 hour - 45.2 MB

Once upon a time ...... There was a boy called Michael Myers. And he killed people!!. This week, our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues as we talk about one of the original slasher movies, and the film that created new type of horror 'monster'.  Michael Myers has endured for over 40 years, but do the teenagers of today still find the original scary?.  Do they understand its relevance to modern horror?.  Do they care? We talk about his first kill, his escape, how much driving he has to do, ...

We're discussing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

October 25, 2021 05:00 - 43 minutes - 29.8 MB

Once upon a time ...... There was a water ride at a Disney theme park that someone thought would make a good film (??!?!), so they grabbed a pen and some paper, and set about writing a script filled with curses, pirates, love and swashbuckling. The film was very OTT, everyone loved the main character who was a drunken bum, there was indeed swashbuckling, rum, love, curses, pirates, rum and strumpets, and thus began a franchise. This week, our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues as we talk a...

We're talking about The Lost Boys (1987)

October 18, 2021 05:00 - 35 minutes - 24.7 MB

Once Upon A Time ...... In an overly 80's Santa Clara, there was a Vampire problem. Michael, who has just moved to the town with his family, meets David and his friends, who are not what they seem, all because he has the hots for Star.  It's up to his brother Sam and the Frog Brothers, a couple of comic shop workers, to save Michael, and the town. Everyone who was anyone in the 80's watched the Lost Boys.  It was the definitive vampire movie of the decade....is WAS the 80's - we discuss ho...

Daddy discusses Detroit (2017)

October 14, 2021 15:00 - 22 minutes - 15.4 MB

For this episode based on Black History I'm going back to the Detroit Riots of 1947, something I knew nothing about, and the murder of two young black men. The start of the film is interspersed with real footage from the streets and news reels, showing what was happening at the time and how things escalated, and this definitely lends a sense of legitimacy to the film.  Then its the roller coaster ride of what happened next. A brave, but sadly not profitable film, though its been well recei...

We're Discussing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

October 11, 2021 05:00 - 41 minutes - 28.2 MB

Once Upon A Time ...... There was  great sword, Green Destiny, and it was stolen.  The owner of the sword, Li Mu Bai, came to reclaim it, but found a potential student in the thief, however the thief didn't want to be trained.  They wanted to be free, but freedom is different for everyone.  The intertwining stories of Jade Fox, Li, Jen and Yu Shu Lien, are played out around the changing ownership of a sword, with some AMAZING martial arts. Our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues with the abs...

Daddy Quickly Talks About Summer of Soul (or when the revolution could not be televised!)

October 07, 2021 13:00 - 15 minutes - 10.4 MB

It's October, and  everyone appears to be doing horror movies, so I've gone for something different.  I wanted to create content to do with Black History Month....but I'm a white middle aged guy from Scotland, so while I may not be the best person to talk about Black History, I'm still going to talk about it because it's a vital conversation. I wondered how to get the ball rolling, and lets be honest, who doesn't like music?.  Steve Wonder,  Nina Simone, Gladys Knight & the Pips?  All grea...

We're Discussing Gladiator (2000)

October 04, 2021 05:00 - 46 minutes - 31.8 MB

Once Upon A Time ...... There was a general, who commanded the Emperors armies, but when a new emperor rose, the general was cast down and became a slave, only to return to as a Gladiator, and seek vengeance for the wrongs done to him. Sounds pretty bloody awesome!! Nieve starts our TOP 100 Movie Challenge with the Oscar winning sword and sandals EPIC Gladiator.  I love this movie.  I saw it five or six times in the cinema when it came out because it had that big screen, classic movie lo...

We're reviewing Gunpowder Milkshake.

September 12, 2021 20:00 - 38 minutes - 26.3 MB

Once Upon A Time ...... There was a girl assassin that screwed up, even though maybe she didn't.  The Firm she worked for tried to kill her, so her Mum, who abandoned her years before for doing pretty much the same thing, appears out of no where, along with three other butt kicking women, and together they kick butt. Finally the people of the UK get to watch the Karen Gillan action John Wick / Kingsman mash up Gunpowder Milkshake, even though its been out on Netflix in the states since Jul...

Daddy tries to fix The Tomorrow War (2021)

September 08, 2021 14:00 - 28 minutes - 19.3 MB

The Tomorrow War does a descent job as a sci-fi film - it's not bad, but its not great.  In short though, it's not $200million well spent.  Would it have made back its budget in the cinema?  We'll never know, but what could be done better?  Are there story issues that could be fixed?, SFX looking a bit ropey?, acting issues?  In this episode Daddy casts his critical eye, and calls upon his film knowledge to try to improve, and 'fix' the Tomorrow War, and maybe even deliver a sequel or two...

We're reviewing Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (Spoilers)

September 06, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 42.4 MB

Ten rings, two siblings and a Dad.  Sound familiar? That's because it's us reviewing Shang Chi, the new Martial Arts Super Hero Action Comedy (MASHAC?) from Marvel, and it's a biggie. We talk cinema, new characters, how to spell Awkwafina, how Nine Inch Nails are credited for Old Town Road, and the many nods to the king of kung-fu action comedy (KFAC) Jackie Chan.  As the first new hero post Snap, how well does Marvel handle, not only a new character, but a character with roots deep in C...

Our (just over) a year Anniversary and Alphabet Film Challenge review episode.

September 02, 2021 14:00 - 38 minutes - 26.2 MB

With the publication of our Transformers episode, we completed our Alphabet Movie Challenge which we started back in January this year(see links below).  In this episode we talk about the films we chose, some of the other films we covered in that time, and our next movie challenge. We also talk Americans shaking their fannies, the King Shark Num Num orchestra, the power button on the dishwasher, and who picks the best movies among the three of us VS the best critical movies. The Alphabet ...

We review Transformers (2007) and our Alphabet Challenge

August 31, 2021 07:00 - 44 minutes - 30.8 MB

Loads of stuff get's blown up, there's swoopy camera shots, massive robots, bad jokes, gratuitous 'Hot Girl' shots and a terrible plot - it can only be a Michael Bay film, so let the #Bayhem commence. Daddy talk about his love for Gen1 Transformers and recounts Isla's birth.  Nieve talks about how much she hates Transformers, and how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is so much better (yes, the Michael Bay produced one), and Isla talks sentience, war and George Clooney for President!! For thos...

Daddy quickly reviews Martyrs Lane (No Spoilers) - an Edinburgh Film Festival Review

August 25, 2021 16:00 - 15 minutes - 11 MB

Back for a third time this week, and I'm talking ghost stories, but very much like The Devils Backbone, there's a mystery to solve along the way.  Certainly more Supernatural Thriller then horror, but not in a The Conjuring type way.  However in a very Conjuring 2 / Annabell Creation way, this film has great performances by the two young girls (Kiera Thompson & Sienna Sayer) as both the ghost and the daughter solving the mystery. Hat's off to Ruth Platt for a having a really interesting a...

Daddy quickly reviews Absolute Denial (2021) - an Edinburgh Film Festival Review

August 24, 2021 18:00 - 16 minutes - 11.5 MB

Another Edinburgh Film festival premier.  I had to stream this one though, using the Film House At Home (Link Below) because I couldn't make the time and the showing had sold out, however I'm very excited to talk about this A.I. goes wrong animation by Ryan Braund. Is it AI goes wrong?  Is it obsession?.  I mean, I love sci-fi, and this covers a whole load of topics, and ideas that appeal to me, and includes a few nods to previous AI's and sci-fi greats.  I talk about the animation and Rya...

Daddy quickly reviews Pig (2021) - an Edinburgh Film Festival Review

August 23, 2021 18:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

Ladies and Gentlemen, Nicolas Kim Coppola, aka, Nic Cage, has returned and he's riding into Tinsel Town on a Pig. While this, on paper, could be seen as a cheap John Wick rip off, it's far removed from the hyper action bullet fest franchise.  Actually it's probably at the opposite end of the spectrum, because not only is it about a man and his pig, its about fathers and son's, happiness, food and cooking.   You never saw John Wick make French Toast, did you? On this episode I'm talking t...

We're discussing X-Files : I Want To Believe (2008)

August 20, 2021 10:00 - 41 minutes - 28.9 MB

I was a MASSIVE X-Files fan back in 1994.  As a young student, the whole flat used to get the beers in, camp out on the couch, eat Doritos, and dream of working a job with Gillian Anderson every Thursday night.  Invariably we'd end up heading to the pub, discussing the episode, then staggering home at 1am because that's what students do. Now, 27 years later, at the end of our Alphabet Movie Challenge, I found a way to revisit those glorious student days with my kids (without the excessive ...

We're reviewing Free Guy (Spoilers)

August 16, 2021 16:00 - 38 minutes - 26.7 MB

We answer that burning question on everyone's lips this week - is Free Guy just PG Deadpool?  Actually we also answer the "is it any good" question too, but does that matter?  It's a Ryan Reynolds movie in which he does Ryan Reynolds things, much like Hitmans Bodyguard, 6 Underground, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and his cameo in Hobbs & Shaw.  He doesn't do any Green Lantern things though thank god!! We also discuss cameo's, the villains, love and crossing the road, streamers and a very spec...

Daddy quickly reviews Blood Red Sky (2021)

August 11, 2021 22:00 - 18 minutes - 12.4 MB

We've had Snakes on a Plane, a Flight of the Living Dead (see what they did there?), and weird sky gremlin thing Shadow in the Clouds.  Now we add to this illustrious list Blood Red Sky - a Vampire on a plane movie.  But this is no ordinary Vampire, she's a mother, and perhaps more important, she's not the villain.  This, much like Let The Right One In, is an original take on Vampires and vampireism, and the characters are not what you think.  Certainly they dont act how they're expected ...

We discuss the Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and some of the other Sherlock's.

August 08, 2021 22:00 - 43 minutes - 29.9 MB

Holmeses? Holmez? Holmes's?  They all look weird to me. Pluralised non-possessive surnames aside, Nieve pulls an absolute belter out of no where this week!!!  Having her pick a film from 1985 was a real shock - totes proud and what not, but not being able to guess what it was really annoyed me (as you can hear). This film had MASSIVE pedigree behind the camera, a veritable who's who of films to come, but was a flop in the end.  So we discuss the use of puppets, the first ever CGI charact...

We're reviewing Dwayne and Emily's Jungle Cruise

August 05, 2021 07:00 - 36 minutes - 25.1 MB

It's not very often we watch all the big film releases of the week, and with 3 streaming sites to cover, its a lot harder, but we managed to see both The Suicide Squad (review episode here) and Jungle Cruise over the weekend. In this episode Nieve and I talk about the use of CGI, the characters, the (obvious) comparissions to The Mummy (1999 version, not the Tom Cruise abomination), the Pirates of the Caribbean rip off and whether or not I can remember the Jungle Cruise ride from Disney Wor...

We're reviewing The Suicide Squad (2021 - Limited Spoilers)

August 02, 2021 07:00 - 51 minutes - 34.6 MB

There is nothing better then going to see an awesome movie on your Birthday.  Even though I'm now 47, it reminds me of the time I went to see Return of the Jedi for a friends birthday and it was AWESOME, but is birthday cinema The Suicide Squad that awesome? SPOILER - YES IT IS!!!.  It's so awesome I edited this episode to leave out some MAJOR spoilers so as not to ruin it for those who have yet to get access to it. Daddy quickly reviews Riders Of Justice (NO Spoilers)

July 29, 2021 14:00 - 20 minutes - 14.4 MB

That's right - No spoilers, because I'm a grown up and I can do that, and because I really enjoyed it and want others to enjoy it too. Mads Mikkelsen has been doing awesome work for a long time (listen to Filmfloggers talk Another Round - link here), and once again he nails this one along with a great cast of actors.  The characters are weird and lovable, the story has so many other things going on that it's not just an Action Comedy, but its also not an American Action Comedy either. In t...

We're reviewing Final Destination (2000)

July 25, 2021 19:00 - 42 minutes - 29.1 MB

Sleep overs are nothing new - we've all stayed at friends houses when we were younger, watched films, eaten sweets and stayed up WAY past our bed times!!. Recently Nieve stayed at a friends house and they watched a couple of films that really interested me.  I was actually surprised that they even watched them since they were 'OLD', but what better time to watch scary movies then with friends?. In this episode we discuss the original Final Destination, but also talk about parts two and th...

We're reviewing Kingsman : The Golden Circle (2017)

July 21, 2021 16:00 - 46 minutes - 31.7 MB

I was reluctant to let youngest watch this film due to a, in my opinion, inappropriate and pointless scene involving a transmitter and a young ladies fairy glen.  I cringed at it, it's tasteless, but fortunately Eldest felt the same way, so they fast forwarded past it. Once that was dealt with I had no problem with the cannibalism, drug use, swearing, use of a meat grinder to kill people or the electrified lasso used to cut people in half. In this episode we talk about how the nasal passa...

The Fear Street Trilogy review (Limited Spoilers)

July 18, 2021 22:00 - 49 minutes - 34.4 MB

Over the course of three weeks Netflix released the Fear Street Trilogy, consisting of 1994, 1978 and 1666.  Each week I did a short podcast, reacting to the film, and the preceding films where applicable, then stuck them all together et VOILA!!!  Three episodes in one. I have said there are limited spoilers because, even though we discuss plot, and deaths, and gore and emo teens (a lot), I've tried very hard not to reveal a few character details, like who controls the witch and who surviv...

We're discussing Black Widow - Spoilers

July 11, 2021 21:00 - 1 hour - 44.7 MB

This weekend the family and some friends crashed on our couches, and we watched the first new MCU Movie in just over two years, and the first to be released on Disney+. While not set post Endgame for obvious reasons, we discuss its place in the release schedule, and ask the most pertinent question - Should we have had this movie in 2016, after Civil War?.  We also talk about all the regular stuff that makes an MCU film an MCU film, as well as broken noses, plot armour, sexy parents, and t...

Daddy quickly reviews American Animals (2018)

July 10, 2021 14:00 - 18 minutes - 13.1 MB

Whenever the "based on a true story" text comes onscreen at the start of a film, I usually always question how true it is, or how how close to the truth it stayed.  Yes, the truth isn't always entertaining, and entertainment is rarely historically accurate, but I feel American Animals is different. It's a docu-drama / crime movie in one, but its really original in that, not only are the original protagonists in the film, there are scenes where the actors interact with their real life chara...

We're discussing Loki Ep 5 (Spoilers)

July 09, 2021 10:00 - 25 minutes - 17.2 MB

Second last episode.  Things are getting really interesting now, but on top of this weeks going's on's, we ask the really important questions LIKE:- 1 - Who would you cast as Classic Variant Thor opposite Richard E Grant's Classic Variant Loki? 2 - If Loki and Sylvie fall in love, and were to have a baby, what would happen since they're the same person? No weird theories from Nieve, and details on next weeks series final special recording (?!?!?) of the podcast. Enjoy. Support the show

Daddy discusses The Big Lebowski (1998)

July 07, 2021 07:00 - 14 minutes - 10.2 MB

This film has been on my "not watched and probably should have" for a long time.  My relationship with Coen Brother movies has not been smooth (check out my NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN episode), but it popped up on Netflix and I decided if I started it, I'd probably watch it. I have now seen it.  It's absolutely a Coen Brother movie in it's quirkiness, its characters and the events that happen to The Dude, but does it change my relationship with the Coens and their films?  Listen in to find out...
