Christian Men at Work Podcast

221 episodes - English - Latest episode: 5 months ago - ★★★★★ - 15 ratings

Dave Hilgendorf from DaveHilgendorf.com interviews men from all walks of life who are choosing daily to be led by the Holy Spirit and live out their Christian faith at their work and because of that they are leading, prospering, glorifying God, and experiencing joy and purpose in their work, and you can too. Have you bought into the lie that your work has no real significance or meaning beyond a paycheck? How about the lie that the time you spend working is not kingdom work and not part of God's plan unless you're a full-time pastor or missionary or you're volunteering at your local church? The Devil is thrilled when you spend your work day feeling like the work you do is somehow second class spiritually. In this podcast I interview Christian men who have made a simple choice, regardless of what particular denomination their church is a part of and regardless of their job title. That simple choice is to invite the Holy Spirit to lead them at their job and in so doing to surrender their work, the biggest part of their life in terms of time, to God. The various reasons why they've made that choice may be different for every man but I believe there are two primary common reasons. The first is they know both from scripture and from a feeling deep down inside that this is God's will for them. The second reason is they know that this is the only chance they have of having a job and a career that really means something beyond simply earning money. This is the one and only way to have a sense of joy and purpose in the work they do. What kind of work they do and whether their work lines up well with their desires, talents, and strengths are both important, but they pale in comparison to whether or not God is in their work. God must be at the center of your work or your work truly will be the necessary evil the world and the Devil wants you to believe it is. The men I interview don't have it all figured out (none of us do!) and I encourage them to be real and transparent about both the victories and struggles of their journey of being Spirit led at their work. Hopefully, in this way, you'll find someone and something in every episode that you can relate to and through which God can help guide you to be closer to Him and more fulfilled and joyful in your daily worklife. Your work can truly be marketplace ministry and much more.

Precision vs Accuracy-Selah73-CMAW170

March 28, 2022 03:03 - 12 minutes - 10.4 MB

Diff between precision and accuracy, precision is hitting the target every time and accuracy is hitting the right target.  Both important, but precision w'o accuracy is foolish and arguably legalism, diligently following a checklist or set of rules but following the wrong rules.   God made the world based on laws and His way of doing things.  If you don't know His way of doing things, i.e. accuracy, you can be as precise as you want but what's the point if you're not following His rules.  ...

Speak Less and Speak More-Selah72-CMAW169

March 02, 2022 02:40 - 12 minutes - 11.2 MB

S Speak less and speak more On phone saw ad for an app that gives you daily quotes and it said “how beautiful it is to be silent when you’re expected to be enraged “ Scriptures  Went On in my morning time to listen to Luke 23 where Jesus answered Pilate's question "Are you the King of the Jews?" with more of a statement than an answer.  Then when Jesus was sent to Herod He didn't respond to Herod's questions at all.  According to Martin B. Copenhaver, author of the book "Jesus is t...

What You Can Control-Selah71-CMAW168

February 21, 2022 04:06 - 9 minutes - 8.05 MB

S   Got an email from OnePathPublishing with clarification on an issue I raised last week which is that Jesus, or Yahusha, will return on on 1st of Tishri and when He said that we would not know the day or the hour He was referring to the fact that the Feast of Trumpets is on the 1st day of the month, which is defined by when the moon first appears, to be confirmed by 2 priests and so it's impossible to predict on which day that will be, let alone the hour.   Luke 7:37-38 "37 “Judge...

Time for Urgency-Selah70-CMAW167

February 13, 2022 21:40 - 25 minutes - 22.9 MB

S   S   Today I want to read 2 articles I received this past week.  In different ways, they hopefully give you reasons to pause and think even more about the fact that we are not living in a normal, business as usual world.  This is certainly intended to make you worry but rather to shock you a bit into a greater sense of urgency of where you are in your walk with God and with living out His plan for your life, both inside your job and outside your job. Surprisingly, these articles ...

Be Holy at Work-Selah69-CMAW166

February 07, 2022 01:21 - 14 minutes - 13 MB

S Israel Bible Center article “What is "holiness" in Hebrew?” by Nicholas Schaser, part of a series called Israel Bible Weekly.  You can find this article through my link as well as by going to IsraelBibleCenter.com and while you're there you can sign up for their emails and maybe sign up for their school they offer.  I've been getting emails from them for about 2 months and find them to be excellent.   In today’s terminology, “holiness” has become an ethical category. Those who act “hol...

Be a Creator-Selah68-CMAW165

January 31, 2022 03:00 - 8 minutes - 8.04 MB

S   I’d like to challenge and hopefully inspire you to be a creator in your work.   In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Genesis%201:1&version=ESV   Last week we talked about how God seemed to have something special in mind with the number 22, assigning the numbers of letters in His language, the # of chromosomes in our DNA and the number of His works of creation.   Then God said, “Let us make man...

Work   I want to share with you the significance of the #22, and how God considered work to be significant enough to be included in this interesting story of the #22. This was brought to my attention by Isaac from The Assembly of Called Out Believers, from a video called "The HIdden Beauty of Biblical Hebrew - Beginner Intro Class" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u480f0vEbaQ Hebrew is the language God used to give the Torah to Moses and it's believed Hebrew is the actual language o...

Your Service of Calling-Selah66-CMAW163

January 19, 2022 17:42 - 24 minutes - 21.7 MB

S See OnePath email on gifts    Subject: What is YOUR service of Calling? The Day You Met the Lord!      The Apostle Paul met the Lord while on the road to Damascus with a blinding light and a voice from heaven. Our Lord Called Paul to serve Him and gave him a Service of Calling. Paul knew his Service of Calling the day of his conversion as he was told directly by the Lord what he had to do. Paul accepted his service readily, knowing that he would have to suffer many horrible persecuti...

Finding Your Purpose-Selah65-CMAW162

January 10, 2022 04:47 - 15 minutes - 13.9 MB

S   The Road to Freedom.  I want to discuss a video I saw this past week called the Road to Freedom, which I hope will help you get free from what's been holding you back, and give you some insights into finding your calling and your purpose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8LJaVGe5JM   I believe God was speaking to me when I watched this because it seemed to make my last podcast episode make sense.  That episode was called visualizing priorities and talking about God being at the c...

Visualizing Priorities-Selah64-CMAW161

January 03, 2022 06:44 - 23 minutes - 19.8 MB

S I'd like to talk about priorities.  At the beginning of a calendar year we often think about goals and a big part of goals is priorities. I like visual aids. We all learn differently and some of us, many of us, are primarily visual learners, I guess that’s why the phrase a picture is worth a thousand words is so well known and why YouTube is the worlds largest search engine   I know this is an audio podcast and I'm going to talk about visualizing our life priorities, but stick with...

The Power of a Name-Selah62-CMAW159

November 29, 2021 06:00 - 12 minutes - 10.9 MB

S   The power of a name God gives people names in the Bible very intentionally The first man was named Adam, which means from the earth one of the first tasks God gave to Adam was to name the animals God sometimes changes names intentionally Abram to Abraham In the original Hebrew language of the Torah, which is the first five books of our Old Testament, the name Abram literally means “exalted father.” The name Abraham, however, contains another unused root word, which roughly m...

Are You a Tough Guy with Paul Horrocks-CMAW158

November 22, 2021 01:10 - 27 minutes - 21.9 MB

Q&A: When did you become a Christian? What led you to write this book? In your book, you picked out four characteristics of tough guys, which we're going to talk about today, you gave examples of those traits from men in the Bible, lesser known men from present day, as well as from Jesus, and you give tips on how men can apply this trait to their lives.  I like this format since it's similar to what we do on this podcast. I love that you used examples from the Old Testament since tha...

S Sandwich work prayer Before work begins, at the moment of a need, after work is done  What to pray: Pray things go well, no matter what happens that you would be glorified both by how things go and how I respond (what and how like with performance evaluation) This past week-project-when problems occur: stay positive, take responsibility   E   Our work is generally a performance based culture, and everyone knows that at some level they are being evaluated for their performanc...

Long Term Vision-Selah60-CMAW156

November 07, 2021 23:25 - 12 minutes - 11.4 MB

S   I want to encourage you today to remember to look beyond the struggle, frustration, and sadness of a particular moment by praying and having a long term vision. In Selah episode 58, I shared about a difficult day I had at my job where I got some negative feedback.  Whether it's at work, at home, in our marriage, with our kids, at church, or another area of our lives, we all have these moments.  Some us have these moments more often than others.  Some of us experience more intense e...

Rob Skiba Tribute-Selah59-CMAW155

November 01, 2021 01:15 - 21 minutes - 18.8 MB

S Rob Skiba died on Oct. 15 The report is that he died from Covid-19.  I won't say much about that other than I'm suspicious of foul play because there was so much that he challenged, but I don't have any evidence of that so I'm not claiming that's the case just Made a big impact on me My wife has been searching for truth and challenging the traditions of men in our Christian practices before I did, and Rob opened her eyes first and then me to a number of things that are in the Bible ...

Ouch! The Sting of Correction-Selah58-CMAW154

October 18, 2021 01:57 - 11 minutes - 9.96 MB

S   I want to share something that happened to me at my job in the hope that you can learn from and benefit from it. I won't say exactly when this happened, but at some point during my career, I was asked by my boss for a meeting after a contractor I worked with had asked for a meeting with him.  For some context I had not had this boss for very long, less than year, and actually had not gone through my first year-end evaluation with him, and he was new to our facility so he didn't kno...

S   From Sep 27   Emerging from Isolation [ 1 min read ★ ]   For where two or three are gathered in my name,  there am I among them—Matthew 18:20 Imagine, for a moment, a man ever isolated, living alone in the mountains, perhaps. August 16, 2021 05:00 - 59 minutes - 35.1 MB

What You'll Hear: Damon got saved in 2009 which led to him evangelizing.  He met another evangelist in 2012 who invited him and his friend to an abortion clinic.  It was very dark. He continued visiting the clinic in 2013 more and more frequently. He met Rusty Thomas who was in the video "Babies are murdered here" He then went to the Herald Society and read the book "Abortion Violation" The Abolitionists in the 1800's were primarily Christians and were working to abolish slavery ...

The Fall Feasts-Selah53-CMAW147

August 11, 2021 18:31 - 8 minutes - 5.91 MB

S   Alone at Work? Whoever isolates himself . . .  breaks out against all sound judgment—Proverbs 18:1 Work is a place where we men are apt to live, not as our true selves, but rather as carefully crafted and false versions of ourselves. Work is a “compartment” where we try to be, not who God created us to be, but images we create all by ourselves. Why? What makes work different? Well, at work, the prevailing culture is too often (and too much) self-focused: outperform, get promot...

Evangelism Tips with Damon Hinkle-CMAW146

August 02, 2021 05:00 - 59 minutes - 34.6 MB

What You'll Hear: After getting saved, Damon prayed and wanted to evangelize the way the Bible says to Gifted evangelists naturally without any training go out and evangelize and develop over time their techniques Most people who say this is not their gift, it's an excuse not to go out and share the Gospel Tracts is one of the easier ways to evangelize because you're giving them the Gospel in a written form in a smaller form. A tract can get somewhere we cannot.   Whenever I rece...

Courage Over Passivity-Selah52-CMAW145

S Dave Brown: men struggled with this from the very beginning with the first Adam in Genesis, sat by as Eve ate the fruit a life of passivity is void of courageous decisions The life of Jesus was an engaged, active life, marked by obedience, obedience to His father We know how Jesus turned over the money changer tables in the Temple and challenged the pharisees by healing and other activities He did on the Sabaath. We also see in Matt 10:34-35 "34 “Do not think that I came to brin...

July 12, 2021 04:34 - 15 minutes - 9.64 MB

S God and wife most important relationships, but God wants us to invest in other relationships as well, in particular other men.  Jesus demonstrated this in how he invested in his 12 disciples but was closest to 3, Peter James and John, and you might say the closest was John. The Bible is filled with wonderful stories of how people relate to each other and how we should do the same (Elijah/Elisha, David/Jonathan)-anyone think of others? S   Lessons from Rocky (spoiler alert). I was 7 years old when both Rocky and Star Wars came out. We rarely went to the theater and this had some swearing so I didn’t see this in the theater but the VCR and ability to rent movies came out soon after that so I watched this movie along with all the sequels and actually Rocky 4 was the only movie for which I stood in line at midnight to see the premier. I would say that the Rocky, Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises where the most impact...

Are You Extreme Pt2-Selah48-CMAW137

June 02, 2021 02:48 - 18 minutes - 11.4 MB

S I felt like my last Selah episode 47 didn't fully address the issue of being extreme and wanted to share some additional thoughts. I'm not retracting anything I said, and hopefully I don't contradict what I said, but rather expand on the topic. Last week, I said that generally living in moderation is what we should strive for, with the only possible exception being living out our faith, and in that part or our lives we should be extreme. I'd like to start this episode by defining t...

Are You Extreme-Selah47-CMAW136

May 27, 2021 00:44 - 9 minutes - 6.16 MB

S There's been a lot of talk about extremism in our political and cultural landscape.  Basically, each side (whichever side of an issue or identity we're considering) is more and more calling those who disagree with them "extreme" as a pejorative term or as a way to criticise, minimalize or belittle someone. In many ways I've been learning that a moderated approach to life is best especially when being too committed and energized by something becomes an idol for us.  I believe there is o...

S   I have a couple devotions I want to share with you on the topic of friendship but first I want to share you some of my thoughts. I was recently contacted by David Smith who I interviewed in episode 86 about his book “Who’s Got Your Back” about the importance of friendships for men. He was very concerned as I am about the negative this pandemic has had on men due to the fact that men aren’t meeting together in friendship and are very isolated. David and I are working on scheduling a...
