In the Fall of 1989, I was 7 years old and in the 2nd grade. That’s when my mom started showing signs of Psychosis. Although her symptoms slowly started during the summer, it really affected my school semester. After my mom threw away my school textbooks, left rotting food in the refrigerator, and believed she could communicate with her FM Radio, that’s when I knew something was wrong with my mom. My entire life changed when she wasn’t able to fully take care of her own child, much less take care of herself through her battle with Schizophrenia.

This week, I am sharing what it was like being taken away from my mom at such a young age. This part of my story is raw, real, and honest but I know that by me sharing the hard parts, my story will bless others fighting similar challenges. There’s nothing quite like seeing your mom battle a sickness she can’t heal from. However, no matter how hard this journey is, no matter how challenging it may be, every now and then I still see my mother’s spark. I know that my mom is still with me and that by me caring for her, God has his arms wrapped around us.

If you are a caregiver and/or have a loved one battling Schizophrenia, I want you to know that you are not alone. While there are tough seasons, God is still good and you and your loved one are still incredibly loved. By having these raw, real, and honest conversations, we are able to pick up the pieces and allow God to heal the rest.
