Alternate Ending - Movie Review Podcast

385 episodes - English - Latest episode: 9 days ago - ★★★★★ - 108 ratings

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized they all shared a passion for movies. Our goal is to save you time and money by sharing our thoughts and recommendations on which movies to race to theaters for, which to watch at home and those to actively avoid.

What makes Alternate Ending different from other film podcasts? Well, we’re not 5 dudes in a room talking about our passion for Fight Club and Braveheart. We’re two dudes, and a lady, of which our tastes are quite varied. Rob, the film-school dropout, has seen an absurd amount of movies, and if we’re being honest, rounds out our Fight Club fan-base. Tim Brayton, our seasoned film critic, shares a more critical view of film, an appreciation for vintage cinema and perhaps limited-release movies that we might otherwise miss. Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good.

Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well.

This isn't a podcast for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a place for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a place for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a place for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a place that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies... one bad movie at a time.

Join us for our weekly review of movies worth seeing, worth avoiding and our Top 5 lists – and don’t forget to play along at www.alternateending.com.

Remake mania claimed its latest victim with Superfly, a new version of the beloved 1972 blaxplotation classic Super Flythat, in keeping with the faster pace of modern life, does away with the space in the title. Over the years, dating all the way back to the silent era, in fact, there have been so many remakes that some of them musthave been worth it, and the team is going to bring new meaning to the phrase "discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time" in trying to separate the wheat fr...

Top 5 Second Films // Black Panther // Early Man // Roman J. Israel Esq.

February 19, 2018 06:00 - 1 hour - 120 MB

Here's a nice high concept one for you. Annihilation will be just the second film ever directed by screenwriter-novelist Alex Garland, after 2015's Ex Machina. Which is almost enough to get us excited, but second features tend to be difficult: for every one that lives up to the promise of the maker's debut, there are a dozen sodden misfires. Hear us discuss our picks for the best directorial sophomore efforts ever. In Worth Mentioning, we catch up with Early Man, Black Panther and Roman ...

February 12, 2018 06:00 - 1 hour - 111 MB

The dregs of January are behind us, and ahead lie three months (or anyway, two and a half) of the year's cinematic misfits: too odd, or too strange, or too under-budgeted to thrive in the cutthroat summer and holiday frames. Plus a couple of gigantic Disney tentpoles. At any rate, we're choosing to call this transitional period "spring" for the sake of sharing our picks for our most-anticipated films of Spring 2018. First up: the 1977-1983 run of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, the generation-d...

Top 5 Movies So Bad, They're Good // Lady Bird

December 04, 2017 06:00 - 1 hour - 142 MB

Depending on where you live, this past weekend you might have been able to see The Disaster Artist, director-star James Franco's take on the making of the infamous The Room, the movie that taught us all that no matter how upset you are, you can always cheer right up by saying hai to your friend Mark, and that nothing helps a cancer diagnosis like promptly forgetting it. With an excuse like that, how could we possibly pass up the chance to celebrate our all-time favorite bad movies? Whethe...

Top 5 Biopics // Coco // Justice League

November 27, 2017 06:00 - 1 hour - 106 MB

Oscar season is here, and it brings with it the promise of real-life stories of famous people, doing the thing that made them famous. There's no end of examples of the biopic that we could have tied it to, but this particular week it's the Winston Churchill-during-wartime tale Darkest Hour that'll do the honors for inspiring our topic. And while national leaders make a good subject for this kind of treatment, we can hardly forget all the musicians, rebels, authors, movie stars, war heroes, a...

It's wall to wall shifty but...

Top 5 Fights // Thor: Ragnarok

November 06, 2017 06:00 - 1 hour - 121 MB

Thor: Ragnarok has quite a few apparent selling points - its bright colors, Cate Blanchett, a robust New Zealand sense of humor, finally being a Thor film that doesn't suck - but surely we can all agree that one of the things the marketing folks at Marvel hope we're really excited for is the promise of a Thor-on-Hulk fight, one on one. No better time, then, to look over the long history of violent cinema and pick our favorite movie fights. From boxing matches to back alley brawls, no hold...

Top 5 Hauntings // The Snowman

October 30, 2017 05:00 - 1 hour - 126 MB

Halloween is upon us, and it's got the Alternate Ending crew in a spooky mood. In honor of "All Hallow's Eve", we discuss our favorite movies spent in creepy, rotting, abandoned old houses filled to the brim with ghosts and ghouls and unseen presences, or at least Vincent Price playing puppeteer with a skeleton. October 23, 2017 05:00 - 1 hour - 115 MB

Independence Day producer Dean Devlin made his directorial debut this week with Geostorm, a cautionary story about over-reliance on weather-control satellites and self-driving cars, and other issues that speak so deeply to our current moment. More to the point, it's about floods and ice storms and all other manner of splashy natural disasters, and that's why we're devoting our next episode to the history of the disaster movie: natural disasters, like Earthquake; man-made disasters, like Th...

Spoiler Alert: Blade Runner

October 16, 2017 05:00 - 1 hour - 93.8 MB

With Blade Runner 2049 having opened to great acclaim, but nowhere close to great box office, we could hardly pass up the chance to talk about the present and past of one of cinema's most legendary portraits of the future (not to mention, it's one of Rob's most-anticipated films of the fall). That's why we're looking at both BR2049 and the legendary, groundbreaking Blade Runner, a film that Tim has very nearly memorised in two different cuts, Rob saw one time a couple decades ago, and Car...

Top 5 Horse Movies // My Little Pony: The Movie

October 09, 2017 12:33 - 1 hour - 118 MB

Ask the right people - Rob & Carrie's kids, that is - and they'll tell you that there's not going to be any bigger film this autumn than My Little Pony: The Movie. We're certainly not going to call that kind of insight into question, which is why we celebrated that film's release by taking a look at our favorite movies about horses, and the strong bonds they form with humans. Be they stone-cold classics like National Velvet, modern crowdpleasers like Seabiscuit, or whatever the hell Spirit...

Fall Movie Preview 2017

October 02, 2017 11:41 - 1 hour - 110 MB

With only three months left in the year, we're about to plunge headlong into the twinned moviegoing epochs of Holiday Movie Season and Awards Movie Season, that merry time of year when big-budget tentpole movies about blowing shit up for the whole family and low-budget tragedies about Brits with disabilities rub elbows in the multiplex, vying for your dollars and respect. Before we take that plunge, the Alternate Ending team is getting ready by looking ahead to our collective most-anticipa...

From the glamorous nonsense of the James Bond franchise to the grubby bureaucratic gamesmanship of John le Carré, espionage has been a treasured subject for the movies since the silent era, and we share our favorites. In Worth Mentioning, everyone catches up wit...

Spoiler Alert: A Matter of Life and Death // Leap!

September 04, 2017 05:00 - 58 minutes - 79.8 MB

One of the greatest triumphs of the writing-directing-producing team of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, the film looks at the life and death (and what follows) of an RAF pilot in the last days of the Second World War. Top 5 Heists

August 21, 2017 05:00 - 1 hour - 107 MB

Stop me if you've heard this one: a group of colorful figures pool their unique talents to execute a perfect crime, probably involving an elaborately choreographed interchange of people in relation to the world's most advanced security system. This time around, it's Logan Lucky, which of course isn't even the first time that director Steven Soderbergh has visited this genre. That this same man, in this same idiom, gifted Ocean's Eleven onto the world is reason enough for us all to be excite...

Spoiler Alert: Ghost in the Shell

August 07, 2017 05:00 - 1 hour - 88.7 MB

Earlier this year, the classic sci-fi anime film Ghost in the Shell received a long-gestating, hugely unnecessary live-action remake. But hey, necessary or not, we're fans of stylish sci-fi around these parts, so it seemed like a good excuse to finally catch up with the new film. Better still, we're going to be taking a look at both versions of Ghost in the Shell, the 1995 masterpiece as well as the 2017 flop, continuing Rob & Carrie's slow but steady education in the ways of anime. In Wor...

Spoiler Alert: The Planet of the Apes Movies

This past weekend, War for the Planet of the Apes made a trilogy out of one of the most unexpectedly satisfying and successful reboots of recent vintage. To get ourselves warmed up for this third round of nihilistic monkey business, the Alternate Ending crew revisited the first two films that got us to this point: 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Top 5 Pixar Movies

June 19, 2017 05:00 - 57 minutes - 78.3 MB

Cars 3 is the 18th feature film released by Pixar Animation Studios, and quite possibly the least-anticipated one yet. That said, we're still going to celebrate, by sharing our picks for the five best films in the studio's 22-year history; a harder task than it seems, given how many of those 18 put in a claim to being among the best animated films of the modern age. In addition, Tim brings Train to Busan to the worth mentioning segment while Carrie and Rob catch-up with Beauty and the Beas...
