Alternate Ending - Movie Review Podcast

385 episodes - English - Latest episode: 9 days ago - ★★★★★ - 108 ratings

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized they all shared a passion for movies. Our goal is to save you time and money by sharing our thoughts and recommendations on which movies to race to theaters for, which to watch at home and those to actively avoid.

What makes Alternate Ending different from other film podcasts? Well, we’re not 5 dudes in a room talking about our passion for Fight Club and Braveheart. We’re two dudes, and a lady, of which our tastes are quite varied. Rob, the film-school dropout, has seen an absurd amount of movies, and if we’re being honest, rounds out our Fight Club fan-base. Tim Brayton, our seasoned film critic, shares a more critical view of film, an appreciation for vintage cinema and perhaps limited-release movies that we might otherwise miss. Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good.

Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well.

This isn't a podcast for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a place for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a place for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a place for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a place that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies... one bad movie at a time.

Join us for our weekly review of movies worth seeing, worth avoiding and our Top 5 lists – and don’t forget to play along at www.alternateending.com.

Pass the Popcorn: Crimes of the Future

June 13, 2022 01:46 - 1 hour - 102 MB

Crimes of Alternate Ending Well, it's not until this very moment that I'm realizing we blew right past the Worth Mentioning segment. We might have also skipped the Patreon shout-outs. It's possible that we zig-zagged our way around the Amazon reads, reviews aaaand pretty much any detail that required preparation. Why? Rob was out of the town this week and the every-5-year-disaster of Tim and I recording an episode alone, did happen. To add to the mayhem, we were joined by some of our f...

And with one of the all-time biggest franchises preparing to come to an end (till next time) with Jurassic World: Dominion on June 10, we thought it would be a great opportunity to take a look at some of our favorite franchises of all time, classic and ongoing. Pass the Popcorn: Top Gun: Maverick Spoiler

May 30, 2022 05:00 - 1 hour - 107 MB

Top Gun: Maverick has us all in the clouds We haven't all been this high on a movie since Rob saw Mad Max Fury Road at the Music Box (deep pull joke, but I'm still going with it. IYKYK.).  Gosh, sometimes it's just fun to agree. Full disclosure, we can't really contain ourselves and we go full-spoiler right out of the gate.  Though, even after all the discussion, I can't really say any of it ruins the movie or gives anything away.  Beautiful people, fast planes, Tom Cruise being a bada$$...

Top 5 Scary Movies (that aren't horror)

May 16, 2022 05:00 - 1 hour - 122 MB

Around the world, the box office charts are being dominated by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest example of Marvel Studios' habit of attempting to shake some of the dust off the formula of formulaic comic book superhero action movies by flavoring them with a little bit of genre. In this case, for the first time in Marvel's history, that genre flavoring is horror, and that's gotten us to thinking about all the other times a not-actually-horror movie got to play around in ...

April 11, 2022 12:07 - 1 hour - 113 MB

Thanks to Patreon subscriber Andrew Milne we're here this week talking about our Top Movies I'm Ashamed I haven't seen. Some, we're embarrassed about and others we've just downright lied to people and said we've seen (only Tim, only Tim would do that). Either way, we bare all on this super fun episode, designed especially to fling ourselves under the bus.  The extra bonus is that Tim arbitrarily has committed to righting the wrongs of the unseen films on his list, so yay for #5! April 08, 2022 05:01 - 1 hour - 116 MB

Brand new month, brand new topic! Patron Gavin McDowell asked us to cover the films of Ray Harryhausen and the people voted for his 1957 effort 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH! Tim and Brennan break down the breathtaking special effects used to create the Ymir, the way the Italian setting makes some of the 50’s boilerplate more tolerable, and Brennan tries to impress his friend Hunter by referencing as many other B-movies as possible.   Love the Podcast? Pass the Popcorn: Oscars 2022 Reactions

March 29, 2022 13:47 - 1 hour - 153 MB

Oscars 2022 Reactions - compelling drama or dramatic disappointment? Well, I won't do what Rob does and crack a joke about starting the conversation with the most shocking thing from the 94th Academy Awards being: CODA winning best picture (ba-dum-ching and spoiler), but now 48 hours removed from the event, I think our brains would like to imagine that the actual film winners were the most compelling story. This episode we're joined by some of our favorite people to do a little round tab...

March 21, 2022 05:00 - 1 hour - 125 MB

With special thanks to Patreon supporter Brian Fowler, we bring you our Top 5 Best Picture Winners, just in time for the 94th Academy Awards. I don't know if it should make us feel better or worse, that this podcast is aging in reverse. What does that even mean?  You'd think after all these years and with us slowly creeping into our 40's, you'd begin to feel that tug of maturity.  Yet, here we are, another episode, another 15 minute discussion about s*x and cheese. And s*x with cheese. An...

Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die

March 14, 2022 05:00 - 1 hour - 129 MB

The Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, it's a catchphrase you've heard before. It's also a catchphrase that you assume has straightforward criteria. Movies critical to cinema? Movies about the afterlife? Movies to see if you have exactly 24 hours to live? If there is something we do well here at Alternate Ending, it's complicate things. So we do indeed come up with our Top 5 Movies to See Before You Die, but it's a curvy path to get there.  Tim also agrees that Carrie's list is the best, ...

Pass the Popcorn: THE BATMAN w. Guest Josh Elder

March 07, 2022 06:00 - 1 hour - 146 MB

This week's episode we dive into The Batman, Matt Reeves' grim reimagining of Mr. Bruce Wayne.  As soon as we launched Pass the Popcorn, we knew at the top of our list was to have our old friend and roommate, Josh Elder.  There are few people we know who are bigger fanatics of the comic-craft and we were really eager for his perspective.  He's bringing his expertise on all things Gotham so we can get truly down and nerdy on Batman: Twilight Edition. (That is what this movie is called, right?...

Top 5 Moguls

February 28, 2022 06:00 - 1 hour - 118 MB

We're coming up fast on The Batman, the latest film centered around pop culture's famous insanely rich business mogul, Bruce Wayne. I am given to understand he also dresses as a bat. But that's not what we're here for, we're here to take a deeper dive into the Waynes of the world, the ultimate winners of late capitalism: captains of industry, movers and shakers, power brokers, the people whose exact work is a little hard to pin down, exactly, but by golly it sure does seem to be lucrative. Top 5 Movie Endings

February 14, 2022 15:18 - 1 hour - 123 MB

Happy Valentine's Day, to the subsection of you that don't despise it.  Though, I guess I don't care either way because I'm still going to send you a virtual hug and you're gonna like it! OO This episode comes courtesy of Patreon subscriber Jack Chivers, who's asked us to carefully select and discuss our top 5 movie endings.  As you can imagine, our opinions on what makes a story complete, vary greatly (don't be deceived by a bit of overlap).  The episode might feel a bit chaotic, as our rec...

You’ll just have to find out for yourself. Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! Follow...

Pass the Popcorn: 94th Oscar Nomination Reactions

February 09, 2022 14:55 - 1 hour - 116 MB

There are so many exciting parts of the our Oscar Nomination Reactions episode, the least exciting part being the Oscar nominees. Ha! This episode, we're joined by Alternate Ending contributors Mandy Albert and Chris Trengove, to share our reactions to the nominees and the biggest snubs.  I had a feeling with this crew I might get a little lost in the shuffle of cinephile-speak. And that did happen. BUT! It was absolutely invigorating to see the group light up and commiserate on mutual film ...

Pass the Popcorn: Moonfall | Tampopo | Soldier of Orange

February 07, 2022 13:28 - 1 hour - 126 MB

Oh, movies! This episode, Carrie and Rob bring Tampopo (by Patreon Travis N's request) and Temple of Doom. Tim brings Soldier of Oran...

Worst Films of 2021

January 31, 2022 12:00 - 1 hour - 148 MB

Our Best Films of 2021 episode, was a bit contentious and so we had hoped to come back lovingly-aligned for our worst films of 2021 episode, but I guess there's always next time? It wasn't hard to find bad movies from the last year, there were some mega-stinkers, indeed.  What qualifies as a bad movie? What elements of a movie make it bad? All things for which, we do not agree.  I will say though, with our New Year's resolution to spark joy and find the positive, Rob makes a valiant attempt t...
