There are many reasons why an individual or group would eat other people - religious rites, shows of strength, signs of respect, and of course desperation.  Cannibalism can be split into four often overlapping categories: by choice, by necessity, endo-cannibalism (eating people within your group), and exo-cannibalism (eating people outside your group).
