Summary
It is said that a job interviewer will make a decision on a candidate in just over 6 minutes. If this is the case then I would argue that there is no skill more important that making a great first impression. You could be a skilled negotiator, have an incredible eye for detail or be an exquisite advocate, but if you can't persuade anyone to give you a job then what use is all of that?

In the third episode of our legal skills series we discuss the crucial art of making a great first impression or more importantly how not to make a bad first impression - or as we have affectionately phrased it (to ensure we can keep our 12a rating) "how not to be a Richard!".  A great first impression can't get you a job, but a bad first impression can certainly lose you it.

Please note: No Richard's were (intentionally) offended in the recording of this podcast.

Act now! Make a difference!
Believe it or not I practice my first impressions. As with any skill it is something you can hone and perfect. So what are you waiting for! Find yourself a mirror and play out some scenarios. How would you greet someone in person vs a Zoom/Teams interview? How would you build rapport with someone who appears disinterested or indifferent? So many things to think about and so little time. You better get moving.
