All you knew about wine is about to bust wide open….we are going to talk about what really happens in the wine business and I’m taking no prisoners...

I am your host Paul Kalemkiarian 2nd generation owner of the Original Wine of the Month Club, and I am somewhere north of 100,000 wines tasted.

How can Groupon sell 12 bottles for $60 and the wines be good? How do you start a winery anyway and lose money? And is a screwcap really better than a cork? Sometimes I have to pick a wine at the store by the label and the price...and I get screwed.

Fruili is one crazy place for vineyards. Massimo Furlan will tell you why.

March 28, 2023 12:10 - 43 minutes - 59.9 MB

All of a sudden there are have been two Friulian wine houses in studio when for years there had only been on in here prior.  Why? The world of Italian wine is complicated and can take years to understand. And as one studies this world, the region of Friuli will inevitably become a topic of conversation. It is no wonder that with Tre Bicchieri in town (Italian wine show), that these houses stopped by for a conversation. Meet Massimo Furlan from the winery Le Monde.  What is so interesting is ...

Piemonte is Italian wine history. Emiliano explains why.

March 23, 2023 13:13 - 55 minutes - 76.2 MB

What is fascinating about the Italian wine scene is the variety and distinct differences between their primary wine regions. And don’t look over the fact there are over 2000 wine varieties in Italy, some still being discovered today. Emiliano Morando visited Wine Talks to walk us through the history of this wine region in the north west of Italy.  the geography of Piemonte hosts many influences to create wines of grit to wines of elegance. Have a listen.

Funny, Latina, and passionate about wine.. Meet Elle Rodriguez.

March 21, 2023 13:00 - 1 hour - 91.7 MB

The minute she walked into the studio, the crew knew this conversation would have little restraint. A practice communicator of not only all things wine but wine with the Latin market. Her tag is The Modern Pour and she is dynamic and funny. Her tagline is “not a pale male stale giving wine advice” and that she ain’t. You will be educated and entertained by Elle and her outlook on wine… and life! Have a listen.

The Mayor of Montefalco was in the house. Beside making incredible wines, Valentino was in local politics!

March 16, 2023 13:00 - 43 minutes - 60.4 MB

Understanding Italian wines takes study and patience. With over 2000 wine grape varieties in the country, it is hard to sort them out. When you break down the country, there is a bit more clarity with grape varieties but little local varieties will confuse you. Umbria, just south of Tuscany, follows suit. Unlike its northern neighbor, it does not grow Sangiovese as the mainstay red grape but grows Sagrantino instead. Valentino Valentina will sort it all out for you.

From the north of the north island, meet Simone Kelly of Seresin Winery

March 14, 2023 13:00 - 54 minutes - 74.5 MB

The Seresin wines are firm in structure and give great insight into where they are grown. Have a listen.

Wine is life here in Friuli. Meet Luca Tomasig.

March 09, 2023 13:00

This is where wine is so interesting. When you find regions of the world where wine is life and the passion of the people who make these wines transcends the business of wine, things start to get interesting. Up in the northeast of Italy as it borders Slovenia is the region of Friuli. The stories that emanate from this obscure part of the wine world are fascinating. The stories of the Prussians during WWI, the proximity to the Dolomites, and the crazy rocky soil, all contribute to the wine...

These guys are funny. And know wine. Meet Michael and Andre

March 07, 2023 13:15

Hard to imagine the Canadian wine scene actually parallels the American wine scene. But maybe not so hard to imagine. Wine has been known to man for over 8000 years and despite the technologies and methods, it is essentially the same as it was. So why would the issues we deal with in the American wine market differ from Canada? The difference is explained by Michael Pinkus and André Proulx, two wine guys that get wine.    This was one fun conversation and you never know how one of these ...

Truly a non-alcoholic wine that has character. Meet the co-inventor Marco Marano.

March 02, 2023 13:30 - 48 minutes - 65.9 MB

Walking the aisles of the Fancy Food Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, a gentleman stuck a sparkling wine glass in my face and said “Do you like wine?” I responded, “Is this a joke?” He went on to tell me that this was an Italian non-alcoholic sparkling wine that he and his wife had created. I have tasted many non-alcoholic wines and they all suck. With trepidation, I tasted it. This was a decent wine. I was shocked and impressed. Come on my show I said…turns out he is in So Cal and I met...

The author of Sideways is up to his old shenanigans. Hear what Rex Pickett is doing.

February 28, 2023 13:30 - 51 minutes - 70.6 MB

Once in a while, you run into someone who is a force of nature and come away with “I want her on my team.” This is Jessica Kogan. It takes humility to be a proper winemaker. Jon Priest is the definition.

February 21, 2023 13:30 - 56 minutes - 77.7 MB

Etude is exemplary in its approach to sustainability. When Jon told me during our interview that the sheep were out on the south 40 aerating and churning the soil and mulching the vegetation, it conjured up a vision of old.  This type of farming and wine production is a discipline more than a method. It is too easy to let the process go for simpler less sustainable methods. And for Jon, the discipline is real.  We got into the weeds (pun intended) on farming, winemaking, community responsibi...

Katrina Frey is the real deal. Try to keep up with her.

February 16, 2023 13:30 - 57 minutes - 78.3 MB

The concept of organic wine farming is really quite old.  If you think about it, vineyards were organic for thousands of years before the invention and use of pesticides. Katrina and her husband were the first certified organic vineyards in California and if that wasn’t enough, they became the first biodynamic vineyard certified in California. A fabulous conversation that took us in many directions…but one thing is for sure, the wines are extraordinary and are exemplary versions of organic e...

February 14, 2023 13:30 - 49 minutes - 68.1 MB

Frédéric truly believes there is a steward of the land for the next generations, which takes extreme humility. This is the word I would use...

I can’t take it anymore. Just hear me out on this. I tell it like it is.

February 09, 2023 13:30 - 28 minutes - 38.8 MB

The formidable Winc is in bankruptcy under the rules of Chapter 11. They were one of the largest Direct To Consumer wine companies in America and they failed. The business failing is one thing, and that happens all the time for various reasons. I am speaking of the failure to the consumer. To the trusting aspiring wine buyer who was hoping they were on to something cool. Business failure is felt by the banks, by the suppliers by the employees, but the failure to the consumer wreaks havoc on ...

They saw the story. They tell the story. Meet Don and Petie Kladstrup

February 07, 2023 13:30 - 1 hour - 92 MB

Wine and war is a subject close to my heart. I had been studying it when I stumbled across the book of the same name. What a story about the Nazis and the French sparring during the Nazi occupation during World War II. The detail that Don and Petie were able to convey as to the punches and counter-punches over the wine trade is inspiring and telling. This is a must-know story and a must-know part of wine history. Have a listen.
