What does it take to become a cartoonist for The New Yorker? Are cartoonists funny people in real life? Where do they find inspiration and overcome creative blocks?

In this episode, I sit down with Emily Flake, a cartoonist for the New Yorker. She is also a writer, performer, teacher, illustrator, and the author of multiple books. Emily’s cartoons have been published in The New Yorker over 100 times since 2008, and she is also featured in MAD Magazine, the New Statesman, and the Wall Street Journal among others. Stay tuned to hear how Emily has made a successful career for herself as a full-time freelancer, despite years of challenges and overcoming rejection. She shares with me how she finds inspiration for her cartoons, what the creative process looks like, and how she's found success through perserverence.

If you have a story to tell—no matter how small—email me at [email protected] or reach out on Instagram, @uniquestorybroadnarrative. If you are hesitant to share your story, unsure if your perspective is valuable, or if the tabloids and headlines don’t match up with real life, I’d love to hear from you to broaden the conversations we are having.
