The Traveling Image Makers

191 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 8 ratings

Travel photography is all about the people, the food, the architecture, and the culture that make each place a special one. It mixes elements of landscape photography, portraiture and reportage and aims to combine all of these and paint a compelling picture of what it's like to live in a foreign country.

Every week we interview a photographer or we host a roundtable discussion on all aspects of travel photography: from planning to scouting locations, from security and the economics of traveling, to how we can travel responsibly and sustainably, with tips about the best equipment, how to interact with people and how to pack light and efficiently.

We will share the inspiring work of masters and amateurs and discover what compels them to travel many hours and cross many borders to get THE shots.

TTIM 41 – How To Save Money with Matt Moreland

September 13, 2016 05:00 - 39 minutes

This is the question that Matt Moreland tried to answer in an article I recently found while browsing the Web, titled "10 Ways to Save Money as a Freelance Travel Photographer". I though Matt's suggestions would be useful to anyone who loves to travel and can't count on a lavish budget, so I asked him to be a guest on the show. Matt Moreland is a travel and lifestyle photographer from Toronto, Canada. After travelling to Peru to hike Machu Picchu he spent 3 months living out of a Jeep acros...

TTIM 40 – Loving the Earth with Luca Bracali

September 06, 2016 05:00 - 54 minutes

To say that my guest for this episode of the podcast, Luca Bracali, is a travel photographer would be too limiting, for he is also an expert TV director and a true explorer, having been to the North Pole, amongst other truly remote locations. My interest in Luca's work and personality, and the reason why I invited him to be a guest on the show, was sparked mostly from his commitment to the preservation of the environment and the deep respect and love he has for the Earth, its nature, and it...

TTIM 39 – Bipolar Photography with Ron Clifford

August 30, 2016 05:00 - 36 minutes

A few weeks ago, when I asked Ron Clifford to be my guest on the podcast, we discussed what topics we could converse about and he quipped that we could mention his distinction of being a “bipolar” photographer. At first, I thought he was referring to having visited and photographed both the Arctic and the Antarctic, but what I discovered during the interview is that Ron had been suffering for years of bipolar depression. I think it was very brave of him to mention this and to tell the stor...

TTIM 38 – Rediscovering Empathy with Jacquelyn Quinones

August 23, 2016 05:00 - 37 minutes

Is technology killing our empathy? This is the question Jacquelyn Quinones asked during her recent TEDx talk in Paris. This is a question that we, as travel photographers, should ask ourselves every day. Technology lets us travel fast and almost always comfortably to remote places. It enables us to take thousands of photos of people from different countries and alien cultures. It invites us to share those photos on the Web with our followers. But in the end, aren't many photographers treat...

TTIM 37 – Travel Writing with Lori Allen

August 16, 2016 05:00 - 42 minutes

It's not a secret that I believe writing is an essential skill for travel photographers. I discussed this in episode 21 with Jens Lennartsson, especially with respect to how travel writing can help photographers make a profit and sell their work to magazines and websites more effectively. So when I learned about Great Escape Publishing and their programs for aspiring travel writers, I contacted their director, Lori Allen and asked her to come on the show and talk to us about it. Great Esca...

TTIM 36 – Exploring The Wilderness with Jay Patel

August 09, 2016 05:00 - 33 minutes

I have been wanting to interview Jay Patel for quite some time, but Jay is a rather busy person, what with having to manage a photography business that is expanding in various directions, running a popular website, traveling, and on top of it all, being the father of a large family. I finally managed to corner him in between trips to Iceland and Hawaii and of course wanted to know all about the land of fire and ice and his adventure chasing puffins and waterfalls. We also talked about what ...

TTIM 35 – Finding Simplicity with Viktor Elizarov

August 02, 2016 05:00 - 33 minutes

Sometimes we are so taken up with the latest camera or lens, with pixel-peeping, and with learning the latest and greatest blending technique for Photoshop that we lose sight of some of the things that really matter when doing photography. I personally think that the greatest benefit that travel photography affords us is the joy of being there in the moment. If this is spoiled by having to fiddle with the complicated controls of the latest camera we bought, that we didn't have the time to fa...

TTIM 33 – Paying It Forward In Nicaragua with Darlene Hildebrandt

July 19, 2016 05:00 - 30 minutes

If you've been following this podcast for some time, you will have certainly noticed that one of the recurring themes here is that of giving back, of using photography to effect some real change in the world and to benefit the communities that we visit when we travel. This was the central point of Episode 25 with John Butterill, of Episode 14 with Anna Tenne, and of Episode 13 with Ralph Velasco. I was very happy then, when I contacted Darlene Hildebrandt, asking for an interview, and she ...

TTIM 31 – Cycling Across Europe with Clint Burkinshaw

July 05, 2016 05:00 - 33 minutes

Clint Burkinshaw, a Travel Photographer from South Australia, grew up spending most of his time engrossed in sport and the beach. That was until he started looking elsewhere to expand his mind further from the life that he knew and was content with, and turned to a map of the world. He was not a hundred percent sure yet of what he was to get from it, but in 2005 he tested the waters by taking off for several months and headed towards Europe where he hit the road and backpacked through well o...

TTIM 29 – Travel Photography as a Side Job with Andy Bitterer

June 21, 2016 05:00 - 29 minutes

My guest for this episode of the podcast is my long time friend Andy Bitterer. Me and Andy have a lot in common, but one thing that truly sets us apart from many other travel photographers is that we both still have a full-time job–doing stuff other than photography–that keeps our families well fed. We take photos in our spare time, but photography is our true passion and our side job, so we try to practice it as much as possible. That often means exploiting every business trip we take for o...

As of recent, it has also become one of the most sought-after destinations for landscape photographers. Having recently read Sean Bagshaw's article about his trip to Patagonia, I wanted to know more, so I asked him to be my guest on the show and to tell us about that remote land. Sean is an outdoor photographer, digital image developing enthusiast and photogr...

I have to admit I’ve always been a big fan of my guest for this week’s episode of the podcast, Doug Kaye. So it was a great pleasure and honor for me to finally be able to talk to him personally. TTIM 22 – Becoming a Professional Instagrammer with Lauren Bath

May 03, 2016 05:00 - 34 minutes

I think Lauren Bath's story is exemplar of how dedication, commitment, and maybe a bit of luck can turn a passion like travel photography into a six-figure business in the matter of a few year. As her bio says: "Lauren Bath is a chef turned photographer thanks to her early success on top photo sharing site Instagram. Quitting her job in early 2013, Lauren launched full force into a career in the tourism industry, effectively becoming Australia’s first professional “instagrammer”! Since the...

April 26, 2016 05:00 - 38 minutes

TTIM 19 – Let’s Be Honest with Paul Pichugin

April 12, 2016 05:00 - 40 minutes

I have known Australian travel and landscape photographer Paul Pichugin for a few years and I was always attracted by his positive personality and admired him for his work and his huge success on social media. It was therefore a big surprise for me to read about the struggles and doubts he described in one of his recent blog posts, Let's Be Honest. TTIM 15 – Walking Around Venice with Trey Ratcliff

March 15, 2016 06:00 - 14 minutes

In recent years, I've taken the habit of going to Venice at least once a year for the Carnevale, a great festival where people dress up with fancy and elaborate costumes for two weeks. It's just one big feast for photographers, especially considering those people will pose for you for free. Naturally, it tends to attract lots of photographers, many of them from abroad. This year, I went to Venice with the aim of meeting up with and interviewing a few of those photographers and this is exact...

Due to distance, I never had a chance to participate in one of their expedition...

TTIM 11 – Pursuing Your Dreams With Barbara Weibel

February 16, 2016 06:00 - 33 minutes

What an amazing story is that of Barbara Weibel! She had an established career in real estate to which photography and travel often took a back seat. TTIM 8 – Urban Travel Photography With Valérie Jardin

January 26, 2016 07:00 - 36 minutes

I was thinking of what kind of introduction I could write for this week's guest on my podcast, Valérie Jardin, but when I read her own words on her website, I thought that nothing I could write could match those, so here they are: "Photography changed my life forever. My passion for humankind drives me to shoot mostly street photography. I thrive on sear...
