191 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 8 ratings

Travel photography is all about the people, the food, the architecture, and the culture that make each place a special one. It mixes elements of landscape photography, portraiture and reportage and aims to combine all of these and paint a compelling picture of what it's like to live in a foreign country.

Every week we interview a photographer or we host a roundtable discussion on all aspects of travel photography: from planning to scouting locations, from security and the economics of traveling, to how we can travel responsibly and sustainably, with tips about the best equipment, how to interact with people and how to pack light and efficiently.

We will share the inspiring work of masters and amateurs and discover what compels them to travel many hours and cross many borders to get THE shots.

March 07, 2017 06:00 - 47 minutes

We’ve been following David duChemin‘s work for a long time (Ugo actually owns three of his books) so we’re not exaggerating when we say that he’s one of our photographic heroes. He is a constant source of inspiration and his writing invariably compels us to look at what we’re doing with a critical eye and go beyond our tendency to simply take pretty pictures and strive to take image with meaning. TTIM 63 – Expert Roundup #3: Newbie Mistakes

February 14, 2017 06:00 - 51 minutes

This week’s edition of the podcast is a bit special. Unlike our typical episode, where we have a conversation with a guest, what we’ve done this time is to contact some of our previous guests and ask them one question. We’ve already done this twice in the past, when we published our “expert roundups” but this time we’ve also asked them to record their answer, so you can hear it in their own voice. The question we asked was the following: What is one thing you know now about photography th...

TTIM 59 – Roberto Salas and the Cuban Revolution

January 17, 2017 06:00 - 42 minutes

To say that our guest for this episode of the podcast has a few stories to tell would be a huge understatement. He’s now shooting a mixture of digital and film with Leica rangefinders because of the slowing down and the deliberation that the system affords him. ...

Like it or not, mobile photography (or iphoneography if you like) is here to stay and few people are as qualified to speak about it than our guest for this week, Jen Pollack Bianco. Jen is an award-winning Seattle-based travel photographer and blogger. She runs th...

TTIM 56 – The Business Of Photography with Ken Kaminesky

December 27, 2016 06:00 - 36 minutes

We’ve always admired the work of Ken Kaminesky, his personality and his cheerful attitude, so we tried many times to have him as a guest on the show. Unfortunately he is also a very busy guy and recently was even busier launching his new company, Discovery Photo Tours. When we finally got a chance to make him sit in front of Skype for an interview, we didn’t want to let the chance slip, even if this happened when Ralph was traveling from Tokyo to Chicago, so there is only Ugo on the show th...

TTIM 55 – Passage To India

December 20, 2016 06:00 - 31 minutes

India, often referred to as the sub-continent, is a location one can’t hope to capture adequately in less than a lifetime. TTIM co-host Ralph Velasco just spent a month there, scouting the place for one of his upcoming tours, and he tried to get at least a glimpse of its beauty, amidst the chaos of its cities. We caught up with Ralph while he was in Tokyo, on his way back to the U.S. after a two-month long trip (he’d also led a tour to Vietnam), and we discussed for half an hour his impres...

TTIM 54 – Traveling Scared To Death with John R. Milton

December 13, 2016 06:00 - 33 minutes

With some past guests of the podcast we discussed ways to avoid clichés and the challenges travel photographers have to face in order to come home with images that are novel and interesting. The guest of this week, John R. Milton, has taken the idea of straying off the beaten path to the limit and adopted a style and an attitude that he indicates with the acronym SCRU, as in simple, candid, raw, and unapologetic. A former investment banker, he has recently taken up traveling to far flung pl...

TTIM 53 – Black And White Landscapes with Andrew S. Gibson

December 06, 2016 06:00 - 37 minutes

Black and white landscape photography has a long and honorable tradition and, in a sense, it is the purest form of depiction of natural landscapes, where everything is reduced to its basic shape, where the interplay of light and shadow and textures dictate the rules of composition and the viewer’s eye cannot be distracted by attractive colors. The lineage of black and white landscape photography runs from Ansel Adams, who was maybe the first to elevate it to a true art form, to nowadays’ d...

TTIM 52 – Going Beyond the Snapshot with Brenda Tharp

November 29, 2016 06:00 - 37 minutes

Travel photography is not a very well defined genre and if meant to encompass every photograph taken while traveling, then millions of travel photos are created every day. How can a serious travel photographer stand out from the crowd and produce work that goes beyond vacation snapshots? What about choice of subject, composition, light, and gesture? How can we exploit those factors to create truly compelling photos and not just snapshots? These are some of the questions we asked of our gue...

TTIM 50 – Introducing Ralph Velasco

November 15, 2016 06:00 - 22 minutes

Alright, my dear listeners, we are at episode 50 of the show, which means I’ve been publishing new episodes every week for almost one full year, never skipping a week. Let me tell you, this is a lot of work, especially since I do it all on my own, from finding and inviting guests, interviewing them, editing the audio, publishing the episode, sharing on social media, the whole shebang! It takes hours of my time every week, but I’m happy to do it, because you seem to love it and because it i...

TTIM 49 – Walking the West Highland Way with Christian Meermann

November 08, 2016 06:00 - 35 minutes

Some people like to travel with cars, others with airplanes, boats, or trains. Some people like to travel on foot. This is the case of Christian Meermann, who is an avid hiker and who recently walked the length of the West Highlands Way, in Scotland, from Fort William to Glasgow, and took some great photos along the way. Christian is an enthusiast photographer and teacher with a strong interest in black & white photography. His portfolio spans a wide range of genres like animal portraiture,...

TTIM 48 – Wales with Mathieu Gasquet

November 01, 2016 06:00 - 35 minutes

I have been friends with this week’s guest, Mathieu Gasquet, since a few years ago, when we used to do a YouTube show about mirrorless cameras together. Back then Mathieu was still living in Italy, but he recently moved to Wales with his wife Heather. I asked him to be my guest on the show specifically to tell us all about photographing that great country, but we also chatted extensively about cameras, which are the focus of the website he manages with Heather. Mathieu’s adventure into the ...

TTIM 47 – Walking the Mountains with Bethany Lloyd

October 25, 2016 05:00 - 28 minutes

I love the mountains, but for some reason I don’t get to visit them often, even though I live pretty close to the Alps. Maybe it’s because the people I hang out with are not lovers of high altitudes, but I miss them a lot. It was therefore a great pleasure for me to chat with Bethany Llloyd this week and to admire her beautiful photographs of the Alps and especially of the Dolomites. Bethany Lloyd is an outdoor enthusiast who takes her photography with her into the mountains. Winter or sum...

TTIM 46 – Travel Portraits with Saraya Cortaville

October 18, 2016 05:00 - 26 minutes

A few weeks ago I was visiting Photokina, the world’s largest photo and video trade fair, held every year in Cologne, Germany. As I was leaving the exhibition’s floor at the end of my last day there, I happened to pass by Fujifilm’s booth and I noticed there was a talk about to start on the stage. The photographer that was going to present her work was Saraya Cortaville, who I didn’t know previously. I decided to stay a little bit more to attend the presentation and I am happy that I did, b...

September 27, 2016 05:00 - 34 minutes

TTIM 42 – A Conversation with Varina Patel

September 20, 2016 05:00 - 32 minutes

My guest for this week’s episode is landscape and nature photographer Varina Patel. This is what Varina says about herself: There is nothing more remarkable to me than the power of nature. It is both cataclysmic and subtle. Slow and continuous erosion by water and wind can create landscapes every bit as astonishing as those shaped by catastrophic events – and minuscule details can be as breathtaking as grand vistas that stretch from one horizon to the other. Nature is incredibly diverse. Bu...
