On this episode, Paul in joined by Jenn Junod to talk about the things people don’t want to talk about, of which (dark and colourful), Jenn has  an abundance of experience with in her background including abuse (physical, emotional and sexual), depression and anxiety.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

My trauma stemming from physical, emotional an sexual abuse, which started as a kid, lasted in to my 20s. I wanted to give up on everything but I was able to start surrounding myself with a different crowd of humans that invited me to self-development courses and that started to change the trajectory of my life.
People had no idea that I went through these things because I was ten times more bubbly and wanting people to like me, so they never imagined I went through anything. I’d also try to buy my friends because I couldn’t conceive how anybody would want to be my friend because at the time I had no self-worth because of all the emotional abuse I went through, being told I was unworthy. The coping methods we come up with to get through these things doesn't always help us as adults.
I never learned boundaries, so I never knew that someone was taking advantage of me because I was a people pleaser. I wanted to buy my friendships and do anything for my friendships because I felt unloved. That attracted people that would take advantage of me. I didn’t understand the dynamics of relationships, I thought that if I was being treated well it was boring and that meant I wasn’t in the right relationship because there was no controversy or tension. It’s almost as if we don’t know better, therefore we attract it without meaning to. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel of working through that and finding and attracting better.
My career coach had me write out columns of everything I liked and disliked about my job and what I was and wasn’t looking for in a new job. He helped me look at all of my negatives to see where they aligned with my positives and how to change all of the negatives into positives so I knew what to look for rather than what not to look for. This mindset changed the things that I was attracted to.

BEST MOMENTS

‘There’s no hierarchy to trauma, everybody’s is very very different, no one wins at trauma, it’s not a competition.’

‘I was a serial monogamist. I went from relationship to relationship to relationship because I felt that if I was alone I would always be alone.’

‘Becoming stronger in a video game made me strong enough to get a divorce, to be able to work on myself and not just put everything into others.’

‘Now when my partner (who I love) fights, I realise I’m not fighting with him, I’m fighting with an emotion that happened when I was 15 or 8 that I never learned how to get through.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Jenn has a story of her own. As a child, she suffered solitary confinement, physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, rape, divorce, abortion, cutting, and suicide attempts. Her turbulent background has forged a path to help those who are suffering, ignored and silenced. Sh!t You Don’t Want to Talk About is a place people can come to find hope and healing, to know they are not alone, and to finally be heard.

Clearly, Jenn’s been through plenty of sh!t most people probably don’t want to even acknowledge, let alone talk about. She thought she’d dealt with her past, but brain surgery in November 2020 unleashed a tsunami of memories that couldn’t be ignored. Working through trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar type 2, and ADHD will be a lifelong journey. Jenn strives to break the stigma of Sh!t You Don't Talk About and turn it into Sh!t 2 Talk About.
