The bad vibrations continue on the Wairarapa region's rail line, where brand new tracks signed off by KiwiRail were found to be too narrow for the carriages that use them. Train speeds have been reduced considerably over a 16-kilometre section of the track laid just two months ago but trains still vibrate disconcertingly through parts of it. And a fix will be slow in coming after Greater Wellington Regional Council said work to grind the tracks back can't be done until a fire ban in the ...

First Up's Leonard Powell went to visit a couple of up-and-coming hitters for a peek behind the curtain.

Deadly bird flu threatens NZ wildlife

February 19, 2024 19:49 - 3 minutes - 3.61 MB

A deadly bird flu is winging its way closer to Aotearoa and it could be disastrous for native wildlife. The H5N1 strain has been spreading rapidly around the world since late 2021. Recent confirmed cases in birds and seals show it has spread to sub-Antarctic islands on the other side of the world, still far away but approaching New Zealand's neighbourhood in wildlife terms. And as Ashleigh McCaull reports, one expert believes it's not a matter of 'if' it gets to New Zealand, but 'when'.

More than 50 states will present arguments before the 15 judges throughout the week, following a 2022 request from the U.N. General Assembly for an advisory, or non-binding, opinion. Israel is not attending the hearings, but last June, it warned the Court that an advisor...

Former welfare minister defends rise in beneficiaries at National toughens rules

February 19, 2024 19:12 - 4 minutes - 4.31 MB

Not only is the government apparently determined to crack down on those who break the welfare rules, it also wants people to know that the problem it's addressing is of the former Labour government's making. It argues that more than 60,000 welfare sanctions were applied to beneficiaries in National's last year in office, but six years later, under Labour, that number had nosedived to 25,000. That was despite the number of people on benefits increasing during the same period. The previous...

February 19, 2024 18:40 - 5 minutes - 5.01 MB

The charity does not expect its cuts to ambulance callouts will impact the quality of patient care, but lower priority patients may have to wait longer for an ambulance. The Ambulance Association's national secretary Mark Quinn told RNZ that the ambulance service's cost-cutting measures could hold potentially fatal outcomes for patients. But Hato Hone St John's deputy c...

Universities warned their funding could run dry

February 19, 2024 18:28 - 3 minutes - 3.18 MB

Some universities could run out of cash this year or breach their borrowing limits. The Tertiary Education Commission made the warning in a financial overview of the sector delivered to incoming Tertiary Education Minister, Penny Simmonds in November. It says it regarded Victoria and Massey universities as high-risk institutions and Lincoln and Waikato as medium-risk. Those universities deny they will run out of money but they admit times are tough. Education correspondent John Gerritsen...

February 19, 2024 18:20 - 5 minutes - 5.27 MB

Welfare Minister defends benefit crackdown

February 19, 2024 18:10 - 9 minutes - 8.87 MB

The government's directive to ramp up welfare sanctions to stop what it calls the surge in benefit dependency under Labour, is being slammed by parties on the left. The coalition has told officials that beneficiaries who aren't doing enough to find a job must be penalised more rigorously than they were on the last government's watch. But Labour says that's ignoring the evidence about so called "tough love" action. And the Greens say reducing, suspending or cancelling benefits as a punish...

Benefit sanctions cop criticism

February 19, 2024 17:40 - 3 minutes - 3.07 MB

The government is being accused of ignoring evidence, as it orders the increased use of benefit sanctions. It has directed the Ministry of Social Development to ramp up the use of penalties on beneficiaries who aren't meeting their job-seeking obligations. But Opposition parties say sanctioning people on the benefit doesn't work and will only drive them further into poverty. Here's our political reporter, Katie Scotcher.

Medical devices to stay 'largely unregulated'

February 18, 2024 19:48 - 3 minutes - 3.46 MB

Patient safety advocates warn scrapping the new Therapeutic Products Act will leave thousands of New Zealanders exposed to harm from dodgy medical devices. The Act, which has yet to come into force, would have made medical devices as well as cell, gene and tissue therapies subject to a similar regulatory regime as medicines. The industry is backing the move saying the new law is heavy handed and would stop people getting access to the latest life-saving technological advances. Ruth Hill ...
