Tairāwhiti Civil Defence is asking people to check for updates for weather and road conditions.
It says a lot of rain is due over the next 24 hours, and conditions are not improving. Emergency services says despite this it was a quiet night for call outs.
Further south down the country, Wellington was battered by a severe thunderstorm last night.
The weather bomb was short and sharp hitting for only about an hour.
