Nicky Irvine was born in New Zealand and worked in Asia for over 22 years as a chartered accountant. Her career was completely turned upside down when in Hong Kong in 1998, she learned that her 9 and half month old son had contracted meningitis, leaving him with bilateral deafness, epilepsy and global delay, to list only a few of his many challenges. It was then that Nicky’s life took on a whole new role, that of being a mother to a boy with disabilities.

Doctors saw little hope for improvement in his condition but Nicky had no intention of giving up on her son. She began a marathon of traditional and alternative therapies to achieve any amount of improvement and she shared these with like-minded groups in the hopes of sharing and assisting others in similar circumstances.

The enormous impact of what happened to her son took her life in ways she had never imagined, seeing her situation as a valuable and priceless gift to make a difference in the way young people with disabilities are perceived and treated in society.
