In this week’s episode, Tylor, Jordan and Emma are joined by Ali Matthews, the Finance and Development Director of the Protego Foundation, to talk more about exploitation-first language, a topic discussed previously in Episode 3 of ProtegoCast, and which Ali is currently writing her thesis on! The team discusses how language influences behaviour, and what we can do to make our language more compassionate.
Also in this episode:
What is exploitation-first language and liberating language? We learn about Ali’s thesis on liberating language and what made her so interested in language in the first place. Examples of exploitation-first language in the Wizarding World (e.g. House-Elf vs Elves Used in Houses) Possible negative connotations behind the term ‘beasts’ Suggestions from Ali on where to start to be more intentional with compassionate language.
Can you think of other examples of exploitation-first language in the Harry Potter series?
We’ll return soon for another episode exploring animal rights in the Wizarding World, but in the meantime, be sure to send us your thoughts via email, leave a review, join our Patreon, and - on behalf of all magical creatures - Protego Maxima!
