How would you define relational trauma? Many individuals have experienced trauma while in a relationship with another and did not realize the trauma until years later. Relational trauma is trauma that occurred within a close relationship. It may not be caused by just a single event but perhaps ongoing events. The trauma can be from the result of ongoing abuse, abandonment or enmeshment just to name a few. It can happen within childhood and even as an adult. The impact can last a lifetime without help. When experenced at a young age it can also affect how one relate to other individuals later in life as well as cause difficulties in adult relationships .
