In this message, Paul continues his instructions for choosing deacons or “servants” by discussing the wives of deacons, or else the women deacons. Then he gives more instructions for choosing a servant. He explains to Timothy that these instructions are to inform him how Timothy should behave himself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. How are we to explain such superlative language? Just what was this “church” Paul was referring to? Then, Paul discusses the great “mystery of godliness.” What is this mystery? Does it involve God manifest in the flesh, or is Paul talking about a just-revealed secret? We consider manuscript differences here.
