On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Caitlin Chambers about leaning on our support systems.

Dr. Chambers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Associate Program Director for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Minnesota. She serves as a team physician for the University of Minnesota Athletics and was part of the first all women medical team for a professional women's sports team in the US with the Minnesota Whitecaps hockey team. As one of the few women in orthopedics (only 6% of attending orthopedic surgeons are women!), Caitlin knows the importance of having a robust support network.

We talk about:

How early exposure to orthopedics can help correct the problem of too few women in the field and the work Caitlin is doing with the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and the Perry Initiative.Having robust support networks, both personally and professionally, so that no one person has to do it all. How Caitlin and the other three women in her residency program brought data to their lived experience and authored a paper that has sparked discussion over the years on the number of women and minorities in orthopedics.
