Todd Bowles is the Standard for Coaches Going From HBCU to NFL, Jonathan Ross Transfers to USF

Todd Bowles is the new head coach of Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the standard for HBCU coaches who want to go to the NFL. He started his coaching career at Morehouse and Grambling then made it to the league. In the NFL, he has become one of the best defensive minds in the league and a now 2x head coach.

Jonathan Ross is transferring from Bowie State to University of South Florida. This is a major step up from the D2 level to the FBS and completely skipping the FCS level. This is clearly big for him as he’s moving up far, but this could also be a great recruiting tool for Bowie State.

I revisit the conversation Jeff Lightsy and I had last week about if all SWAC teams are comparing themselves to Jackson State. I try to put myself in the shoes of those who didn’t like what Lightsy had to say. I don’t think comparing yourself means looking up to JSU.
