Everyone cared for, no one alone.

That’s the vision Mark and Jenn Mayhew have for their COVID-19 community care initiative in South London. They live in a multicultural neighborhood comprised of roughly 15,000 people. And like so many places in the UK, when the Coronavirus hit the people in their area —especially older, isolated individuals—it left the community reeling.

Their response is to empower each street in the neighborhood to decide how they can best care for their neighbors in crisis. Though the Mayhews admit their grassroots effort is a messy, decentralized system, the results are difficult to argue with:

·      Regular food collections from every street to aid Food Banks

·      Delivery of food parcels to neighbors over 60 years old

·      Collecting toys and equipment for babies and children up to the age of five

·      Providing Critical Care teams from a local hospital and hospice care workers with snacks and treats, and items for their noticeboards

As you listen to Episode #011 of the Live the More podcast, we hope you get a much-need dose of hope and inspiration for your day. And we hope that you, too can find ways to follow the Mayhew’s lead in your neighborhood. The community initiative website we mention in the episode has loads of free resources, so get dreaming, get started, and experience the joy of very simply loving your neighbor.
