The Incarnation -

The Christmas story is about the incarnation, God taking on human flesh. It’s extremely complicated but so important because the incarnation is the key to all of Christianity: it explains how Jesus could do miracles, teach with authority, die and rise again to new life – and for all of this to have an impact on us.

Gospel Rhythms -

Paul concludes this letter full of future hope with instructions for living peaceful lives in the present. It’s important for us to understand what God’s peace is, so that we can relate to Him and those around us in the ways Paul describes.

Keep the Spirit’s Fire Aflame -

1 Thessalonians only has two “do not’s” and they are about the Holy Spirit. Dan spoke about how we must keep the fire of the Spirit going in our lives to move forward.

Gospel Behaviour -

1 Thessalonians 4:3 tells us that the will of God for our lives is sanctification: that we would become more and more like Jesus. Paul immediately applies this to sexual immorality in particular, giving us urgent warnings but great hope as well.

The Flesh, the World, the Devil -

Jesus is coming again. All of our hopes and dreams are to be centred on that event. In our active waiting, God is making us ready and we will face opposition. In this message Dan looks at three sources of what can hold us back and how we can overcome them in Christ.

Asking and Receiving -

Our God is a living, giving God! Jesus shows this to us in so many ways and calls us to respond to His generous offers of generosity.

United Prayer Is Powerful -

Daniel Goodman leads the eldership team at City Church Cambridge, part of Relational Mission. He has been instrumental in shaping the leadership of Hope Church Borders since it was planted, as well as serving King’s Church Edinburgh at conferences and weekends away.

The Parable of the Talents -

Having a correct view of God and of ourselves are vital ingredients if we are to bear fruit in this coming Kingdom.

Gospel Focus -

New Testament Christianity was focused on the return of Jesus, so we need be aware of what is going to happen and what it means for us now.

Kingdom of Forgiveness -

Dan speaks on the parable of the unforgiving servant and reminds us that just as Jesus has shown us mercy and grace in forgiving us, so too must we display that to others and forgive them.

The Heart of Godly Leaders -

In 1 Thessalonians Paul writes of the proven track record towards the church, in how they lived their lives in working hard, their attitude towards them and how they were never a burden to them. Matt taught out of 1 Thessalonians 2 on how these same examples and heart-attitudes should be the hallmark for all our leadership in King’s as well.

Preparation for the Kingdom that is Yet to Come -

The Parable of the 10 bridesmaids talks of the Kingdom of Jesus that has not yet come, and warns us to be ready for when it arrives. Dara talks about how we can be ready, and that it is the Holy Spirit who helps us with this.

The Kind of Christians who Change the World -

1 Thessalonians writes of the things that the new Christians in Thessalonica were doing well which helped them to mature quickly in their faith. Dan highlights three of Paul’s points that we should also be doing to mature and to spread the Gospel.

The Good News -

The gospel is the Good News that Jesus saves and transforms our lives. Will you taste and see that the Lord is good, and overcome the barriers that may stop you from living that to the full?

This Kingdom is a Gift -

Jesus’ parable in Matthew 20 shows us that the Kingdom of God is an undeserved gift from a compassionate King. It is a Kingdom of grace, from first to last.

Gospel Story -

Paul starts his letter to the Thessalonians by asserting that the story we are all in is being told by God from first to last. Although this is difficult to comprehend, it is truly great news: proving to us that life has meaning, humbling us, and giving us confidence to obey God.

Where is your Treasure? -

Here Hannah speaks on the parable of the hidden treasure and how it reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate treasure, for which we should give up everything else. We were reminded to do so not in a way that counts the cost, but instead with great joy at the fact that we have the greatest treasure.

Everyone Engaged -

To be a thriving church that is used to build the Kingdom of God, we need to follow the example of the early church in Acts. This means being all in and putting each of our gifts to good use in serving others.

The Lost are Found -

Through three parables in Luke 15, Jesus shows us that everyone has incredible value and worth. Jesus is the only one who rescues the lost, and He takes such joy in doing it.

Multiplication Mindset -

God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. That’s the story of the birth of the church in Antioch in Acts 11. God wants to do more of this today, so here Dan inspires us to seek that and be open to how that could happen.

Small Beginnings -

Dan starts our evening meeting series “This Coming Kingdom” by talking about how the Kingdom of God is a tension between future certainty and the weakness of small beginnings; as Christians we live our lives in that tension.

Zerubbabel -

Zerubbabel faced opposition and discouragement when he was called to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, but he responded with faith and obedience. What can we learn from him in our calling to build God’s kingdom where we are?

Joseph -

God entrusted Joseph with the immense task of bringing up His Son, Jesus. The Gospels reveal Joseph to be a righteous man of faith and obedience.

Josiah -

Although his reign began at the tender age of eight, Josiah went on to become one of Judah’s greatest kings. Danny looks at how we, like Josiah, can humble ourselves before God and have a heart that is responsive to Him.

Hezekiah -

Hezekiah was one of the great kings of Israel whose life shows us what it looks like when we respond to God’s grace and calling, and walk according to God’s order. Raph Mrode teaches us about this, as well as how to handle overwhelming circumstances, and the risk of focusing on the wrong things.

Solomon -

In this preach we hear how the temple that Solomon built highlighted that Jesus would come as the temple, and shows the process of God’s presence going from being unreachable to being something that we get to carry with us every day.

Ruth -

Ruth was not born into the people of God, but her story reminds us that God loves the outsider. He cares deeply about the ordinary details of our life and He can be trusted, no matter how dire our circumstances seem.

Judah -

The life of Judah shows us the corrosive effect of bitterness and jealousy, but also reveals the power of repentance and reinstatement. No one is too far gone for God. He loves to forgive and reunite His people.

Explaining Genealogies -

In this introductory message to the “Meet the Family” preaching series, Luke explains why genealogies are important and provides some context to the study of Jesus’ family tree.

More than Conquerors -

From Romans 8 Matthew talked about five proofs of God’s love for us that mean we can be secure in our place in God’s family forever.

Sonship -

Romans 8 says that we are no longer slaves, but are brought into the sonship of God, and this changes everything. Dan spoke about 5 ways in which this change is significant. Please note that this recording began with a round of the `Opposites’ game, but the introduction for that was lost from the recording.

No Condemnation -

Paul starts this glorious chapter with wonderful headline news: that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ! He goes on to show what God has done to make this true for us and how we can have confidence in our new status.

Prayer -

3 members of King’s spoke on the topic of prayer. Lizzie talked about the importance of praying continuously. Doris reminded us that prayer is powerful and so we must pray for, and with, each other. Guy spoke about how we need to be persistent in prayer, but when we are to keep those prayers full of faith.

Hospitality -

In order for us to function as the Family of God, we need to practise regular, simple, real hospitality to those inside and outside of the church.

Love -

If we want to find Christ-like maturity, we need to follow the road called love. This is a hard road, and it’s uphill all the way. So how do we keep going?

Communion -

The Lord’s Supper makes us look back with thankfulness to the cross, look forward with hope to the return of Jesus, look in at ourselves honestly and consider if we’re in good relationships with others, and look out with love at the family God has placed us in.

The Greatest Commandment -

Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind. In this talk featuring three preachers, first Jess Robinson challenges us on how we can best handle corporate worship in a biblical way, Tim Cocking shares practical tips for worshipping with everything in our everyday lives, and Josh Oldfield speals on the mind and how God doesn’t look for our intellectual ability but rather for our love of Him.

Anointed for Action! -

Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit to do all that the Father had called Him to do – we need this too!

Commitment -

This week Sandy challenged us not to get cosy but reminded us of what Jesus has done for us and how that compels us to stand in the posture of Christ.

How the Risen Jesus Transforms Lives -

Dan spoke about how in Luke 4 Jesus quotes Isaiah 61 to show how He is the answer and what that really means for us.

The Suffering Substitute -

The final Servant Song in Isaiah confronts us with our wretched sinfulness and the horror of the cross, and gives us the hope that God will deal with our sins at the cross and give us Jesus’s righteousness instead.

Salvation to the Ends of the Earth -

Matthew looks at the over-arching purposes of God in choosing a people and promising to Abraham that through his seed all the nations of the world would be blessed.

Beholding Jesus -

The first of Isaiah’s “servant songs” tells us many wonderful things about Jesus and helps us to see Easter as the fulfilment of God’s great plan.

Don’t Walk By -

Don Macmillan from Safe Families for Children Scotland visited us in 2019 to challenge us about the love of God and invite us to get involved in that charity’s great work with vulnerable people in our city.

Adrian uses the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman to explain how Jesus offers Himself and His salvation to any who ask Him.

Everyday Obedience -

The everyday humdrum of life can seem like the last place we’d see Jesus at work. But just as the weary fishermen obeyed Jesus and cast their empty nets again after a night of disappointment, our faithfulness to God in the small things positions us to receive the abundance of His miraculous grace in the everyday.
