Daniel Pape joins us on the podcast this week to talk about a common spiritual trap many fall into. The trap around compassion. Daniel and I discuss a phrase he has coined, “Discernment transcends compassion when wisdom calls for it,” the answer to a question he often asks himself when deciding whether compassion or discernment has greater utility for the higher good of a circumstance. He further goes on to explain how the two are actually not mutually exclusive. That is, you can be compassionately discerning. We talk more about the differences between compassion and discernment and specific examples of when discernment is the best choice for a particular situation. Tune into this week’s episode to hear more on how striking a balance between compassion and discernment can help you, as a spiritual coach, serve in a big way.

Key Points:

Discernment transcends compassion when wisdom calls for it.

You can be compassionately discerning. You don’t abandon compassion; you simply introduce discernment.

How you can use discernment to serve your clients better as a spiritual coach.

Pay attention to when you feel compassion. What is the bigger picture of what is happening? What will be most useful for the greater good?

The importance of starting with yourself as you learn to balance compassion and discernment so that you are able to serve at your highest level.

Compassion… The trap is that it’s very alluring as you move forward in service, but you want to provide utility (discernment) in what you are offering.
