137 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 1 year ago - ★★★★★ - 12 ratings

The role of dad has changed for the 21st century physician father. With that comes different expectations compared to the physician dads before us. With so much changing, where do we turn to to get answers about how to be the dad we always expected ourselves to become? This podcast is designed with the physician dad in mind. I am Dr Jeremy Toffle, physician, husband, father to two boys, and self proclaimed imperfect dad. Through my own struggles as a parent, I have come to find that there are several key core foundations that make up who we are as a parent; if we chose to improve these core foundations, we can strive to be the father we always expected to be. Join me in this show as I discuss each of these core foundations as well as interview experts in various fields of these same principals. I also discuss dad life with new and experienced dads, helping us rediscover what it means to be a dad in the 21st century as a physician and learn to embrace our imperfections along the way. This is the Imperfect Dad MD Podcast

COVID Update on Vaccine Duration Trials and Antibodies in Breastmilk

December 15, 2021 06:00 - 17 minutes - 12.2 MB

With the holidays amongst I felt it was time for another COVID vaccine update.  As a parent and dad I am trying to stay up to date on everything I can to make sure I have the best knowledge not just for my patients but for my family as well. Recently I started listening again to the "This Week in Virology" podcast.  If you have never listened they take deep dives into everything virus related.  Sadly the last two years have been significantly focused on COVID, however they do an exceptional...

Friday Review - Be a Grinch This Christmas

December 10, 2021 06:00 - 9 minutes - 6.87 MB

If you are a parent out there you have probably watched some version of "The Grinch" on TV or in the theater.  The basic premise is the Grinch decides he hates Christmas and plans to ruin in for all the Whos by stealing their decorations, lights, foods, toys, etc.  Yet in the end he learns what Christmas is all about. But what if it was all the Whos's fault in the beginning?  What if their LACK of showing outsiders what Christmas is truly about is what led to the Grinch's disgust of it? Ho...

Slow Down on the Christmas Presents

December 08, 2021 06:00 - 19 minutes - 13.5 MB

It is that time of year again!  With December here many people are searching for that special gift for their loved ones (or themselves).  It seems that when the season of Christmas or other holidays commence our sense of NEEDS versus WANTS tend to intermingle.  In August you decided NOT to buy those pair of shoes because the cost was ridiculous; however now with Santa around the corner we find various reasons that the cost really isn't that bad... As parents we do this with our children as ...

Friday Review - The Cycle of Fatherhood Failures in Star Wars Continued

December 03, 2021 14:00 - 9 minutes - 6.48 MB

This Wednesday I discussed the father figure in Star Wars with Dr Junaid Niazi.  We focused a lot on the Mandalorian character and his progression into being a dad.   In today's Friday review show I continue to explore the idea of how the cycle of fatherhood failures leads to the various crises in the Star Wars Universe.  We see this in every day life as well.  The way we were raised by our parents influences how we raise our kids.  This then influences the way they raise their own kids, an...

How Dads Influenced the Star Wars Universe

December 01, 2021 06:00 - 25 minutes - 17.5 MB

As a dad, you tend to wonder how your kids will turn out.  Did I do the right thing in that situation?  Did I handle that conflict the best way?  Did I really prepare my kid for the real world? We see how our parenting directly and indirectly affects our kids on a daily basis.  Through our kids we get to see the good AND the bad in our parenting.   But how does this affect the heroes we are familiar with?  What if a better father figure is all we need to improve the lives of the villains i...

Friday Review - Do Heroes Have To Be Aggressive?

November 26, 2021 06:00 - 7 minutes - 5.37 MB

Last week I spoke about my thoughts on how Marvel Super Heroes are molded by their dads (or lack their of).  This week in church a similar them was discussed, and I feel like it is one that we should pay attention to.  Do heroes need to be aggressive?  We have seen all throughout history that those that win the battles tend to be the biggest and strongest.  Super heroes getting matched up against a stronger opponent always seem to find that extra bit of strength or some new skill to best th...

Dad Lessons From the Marvel Universe

November 17, 2021 06:00 - 19 minutes - 13.2 MB

I know when I go to a movie or sit down with my kids to watch one at home, the last thing I am doing is trying to find parenting tips.  However, this week I did just that.  I had recently promised our boys they could watch Shang Chi and the Ten Rings at home.  We loaded up the movie and our boys were very excited to see all the incredible fight scenes.  However, much of the movie focused on the relationship between Shang Chi and his father.  Our boys noticed, too.  They began to ask many q...

Friday Failure - When Your Child's Primal Brain Activates Over Clothing Choices

November 12, 2021 06:00 - 9 minutes - 6.7 MB

Do you ever have those arguments with your kid and you ask yourself "How the hell did we get here?"  They are making no sense in their reasoning, or they possibly can't even put together a complete sentence.  Maybe you have only heard yelling for the last 30 minutes and no actual words.  This is an example of your child's primal brain taking over.  The authors of the book "The Whole Brain Child" refer to this as the lower brain.  This is where all the base instincts kick in, and sometimes ...

Balancing Your Child's Left and Right Brains

November 10, 2021 06:00 - 20 minutes - 13.8 MB

Have you ever heard the idea of someone being more left-sided or right-sided when it comes to their brain?   Have you ever asked yourself which category you fall in?  What about your kids? Lately I have been rereading (ie listening on Audible) the book "The Whole Brain Child" by Drs. Daniel Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD.  The book focuses on various parts of the brain and how we can utilize this knowledge to better understand our kids' responses to various situations and improve our...

Friday Feelings - Enjoying the Moment

November 06, 2021 04:00 - 8 minutes - 6.11 MB

Have you ever had a long day at work, come home, and knew that things could either could very bad or very good depending on how you approached the evening?  Today was a similar type of day for me.  The week was long.  We were on a tight schedule to make an event that night, and going straight from work to changing to heading out the door again, I was EXHAUSTED.  But I decided to make a choice that led to an insanely fun evening.  That choice was dancing with my wife and kids I am happy to a...

Dad Life with Curbsider Podcast Host Dr Christopher Chiu

November 03, 2021 05:00 - 31 minutes - 21.5 MB

This week I get to talk dad life with Dr Christopher Chiu.  We both share several things in common, such as being a physician, dad, podcaster, and husband.  However, we both tend to nerd out as well.  Listen this week as we discuss his take on being a dad and doctor, how his father may have influenced his interpretation of being a dad, and find out which Hogwarts house he belongs to!  Yes, we did discuss that as well. Christopher Chiu, MD, FAAP, FACP is a Med-Peds doctor who has made his wa...

Friday Feelings - How Our Wants and Desires Change with Time

October 29, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.75 MB

Have you been planning some big excursion for the last several years, only to be thwarted by work or family obligations?  Was there something you wanted to do in medical school but never got around to it?  Do those thoughts ever negatively affect YOU? It is not uncommon as a physician to feel like we missed out on a part of life.  In our 20's we are busy in medical school and residency while our college friends are out "finding themselves."  We are behind on saving for retirement.  We don't...

Covid Vaccine for 5-11 Year Olds and Making Decisions as a Parent

October 27, 2021 05:00 - 29 minutes - 20.2 MB

I recorded this episode Tuesday night, right after the FDA approval for the use of the Pfizer COVID mRNA vaccine for kids aged 5-11 years old.   For some parents, this decision has been a long time coming.  Many parents have been hoping for the chance to protect their kids with the use of a vaccine.  Others are more hesitant on the decision, wondering if it is the right thing to do. In today's episode I discuss my thoughts on the use of the vaccine at this age, the data used to make the de...

Friday Review - Don't Entertain Your Kids

October 22, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.88 MB

This week I spoke about how envy negatively affects our parenting in various ways.  Have you ever caught yourself flipping through other people's vacation photos, daydreaming about taking your kids to a fantastic place only to leave you feeling like your kids and family are missing out?   Sometimes we think our kids want us to do these extravagant things for them on a daily basis to make life fun.  However, sometimes our kids just want you to be you.  As the great Roy Kent says, "Most adults...

Understanding Envy and How it Relates to Parenting

October 20, 2021 12:00 - 17 minutes - 11.8 MB

Social media, school, close friends, unknown neighbors, complete strangers - these are the people we compare our lives to.   Sometimes we feel like we are doing better than most of them, and other times we are way behind them.  How does this affect how we parent?  How does this affect our daily lives?  How does it affect our feelings? Envy is one of those words most of us choose not to discuss.  We would rather not reflect on how many of the decisions we make in life are derived from the fe...

Friday Feelings - Cub Scouts and Your Kids

October 15, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.63 MB

Do you do cub scouts with your kids, or have you ever thought about it? I was able to spend this last weekend with both our kindergartener and 3rd grader camping out for cub scouts.  This was a first for our 5-year-old, but I feel like out 8-year-old is a pro now.   Scouts is such an incredible experience not just for our kids, but for us as parents as well.  This weekend we got to do a lot of fun things like build a tent, hike, play in the woods, and we even burnt a flag.  Confused?  No th...

Appreciating Your Spouse

October 13, 2021 05:00 - 16 minutes - 11.3 MB

These last 2 weeks I have been off work and managing the full day to day in terms of household tasks - cleaning, cooking, getting the boys to school, homework, bedtime routines, etc.  Although I knew I would be doing this (and although many of these things I was already doing before these 2 weeks),  the sheer volume of now doing EVERYTHING has begun to add up.   Sometimes we don't always recognize the extent of what our spouse may do on a day-to-day basis.  Even in 2-physician households, t...

Friday Review - Discussing Social Media Use and Kids

October 08, 2021 11:00 - 7 minutes - 5.43 MB

Earlier this week I discussed how we can relate the crashing of Facebook with parenting.  However, I feel the discussion of social media use and our kids is just as important.  This week's review show  has me discussing some quick thoughts about social media (and screen time in general) and how it affects both us as parents and our kids.  Remember to SUBSCRIBE and LEAVE A REVIEW!  I want to be able to help as many dads and parents out there, and I can't do it without YOUR help! Finding Your Facebook as a Parent

October 06, 2021 05:00 - 15 minutes - 10.7 MB

Unless you have been completely disconnected from social media or the news, you probably heard about the "crashing" of Facebook for roughly 6 hours on Monday.  For some of you, this maybe meant nothing to you as you were at work and not checking up on your favorite cat memes or Marvel fan theories.   For others, the system being down had significant consequences.  For starters, many people rely on Facebook for their online business presence either through sales, ad revenue, private groups, ...

Literally Your Kids Are Taking You Literally

September 29, 2021 05:00 - 17 minutes - 12.1 MB

Have you ever said something to your kid, expecting them to understand the nuances of the phrase only for them to actually take it verbatim?  "Dad, I gave you one second like you said."  "Dad, I don't have any ducks to put in a row."  "Dad, I tried to walk like you said but it still hurts.  Why didn't it come off?" Our kids are created to trust the words we tell them early on.  Theta brain wave patterns in our younger children allow them to learn more readily and create more subconscious be...

Friday Feelings - Words of Affirmation for Our Kids

September 24, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.24 MB

This week I talked about coaching our kids and how that can play an influential role in our relationship with them.  However, have you ever had a coach that apparently had nothing but negative things to say to you?  Doesn't really motivate you to play harder, does it? This week I talk about my feelings on words of affirmation and how I can DO BETTER with this.  We all can find areas in our lives with our kids where we can really improve this.  I hope you listen in! This week's sponsor is L...

Coach Your Kids

September 22, 2021 05:00 - 16 minutes - 11.6 MB

How many of you have had the privilege to coach your kid in a sport or activity?  How many of you remember your dad coaching YOU?  Was it a good experience, or a lesson to learn by? Friday Feelings - How Mindset Creates Success

September 17, 2021 11:00 - 9 minutes - 6.66 MB

If you had asked me a year ago where I would be at this point in my life, I probably would have never assumed I would have a podcast releasing its 60th episode.  I also would not have guessed that I would be giving talks at summits based on my passion for helping physician dads.  That was not met.  I was just a pediatrician in Omaha playing around with a blog all while admiring groups like Passive Income MD, Physician on FIRE, and White Coat Investor. One year later, and here I am looking a...

Yes Your Kid Can Wear a Mask

September 15, 2021 11:00 - 19 minutes - 13.7 MB

As the new school year has started and we are about a month or so in, many of us find ourselves in a similar scenario as last fall - do our kids need to wear a mask at school?  Many school districts around the country have approached this in very different ways.  With these recommendations have come a loud voice of people who are strictly opposed to all forms of mask wearing; especially in our kids. Today's episode is NOT about the science or arguments for or against mask wearing.  It is ab...

Friday Feelings - Getting Back on the Bike

September 10, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.54 MB

Ever heard the phrase "When you fall get back up?"  I am sure you have, as many of us parents like to push it down our kids' throats when they want to give up too soon.  But what about us as parents when we fail?  Do we get back up and try again or let ourselves continue down the path of falling? This week's Friday episode is devoted to my feelings about a specific situation that occurred between myself and our older son.  See how I apply the message above to the situation - cause literally...

How Gender Roles Have Increased Parental Anxiety

September 08, 2021 05:00 - 23 minutes - 16.4 MB

Let's be honest.  The role of mom and dad has changed over the last 30 years.  Where dads used to be seen as the "worker" of the family while moms were the "home makers," these definitions have completely changed over the last generation.  However, have our mindsets actually changed along with it? Listen in this week as I discuss my thoughts on how the shift in the role of "dad" and "mom" has actually INCREASED physician parental anxieties rather than improve them.  Confused?  Seriously - t...

Friday Review - Don't Go For the Quick Fixes in Parenting

September 03, 2021 05:00 - 8 minutes - 5.91 MB

In the last 2 years, people have been looking for an easy solution to the COVID crisis.   This includes many talk heads on social media touting false treatments, poor scientific data, and just plain misinformation.  However, these people have amassed tens of thousands of loyal followers who swear that everything they are being told is true. The same thing happens in parenting.  We are tired, frustrated, and annoyed by various aspect of parenting; many times this leads us to look for a quick...

August 27, 2021 05:00 - 7 minutes - 5.52 MB

Once you realize that 90% of all the time you will have with your kids is in the first 18 years, it really puts things into perspective.    This week I talked with Dr Leif Dahleen from Physician on Fire.  We discussed his decision to FIRE, how this affected life as a dad, and if he thinks it was the right choice for his family (you can probably guess the answer).    During the discussion he referenced a blog post he had read discussing how much time you get with your kids.  The topics got m...

Bringing the Outside World Home - An Interview with Jeremy Myers

August 11, 2021 05:00 - 25 minutes - 17.8 MB

I am a part of several physician financial groups online.  It is not uncommon to hear other doctors talk about how they want more financial freedom so they can take their kids around the world and expose them to other people and cultures. What if that isn't an option for you?  How do you still give your kids that experience without having to rack up all those airline miles? Today's interview is with father Jeremy Myers.  He is a campus staff pastor at West Virginia University.  Part of hi...

Friday Review - Helping Your Kids Embrace the World Around Them

August 06, 2021 05:00 - 12 minutes - 8.52 MB

As a dad, we are preparing to get back to school in 1-2 weeks.  This includes getting new clothes, supplies, backpacks, and digging out our put away masks.  That's right.  Although it seemed like masks and school may no longer have been a concern for this school year, the rise of the Delta variant has one again disrupted the flow of normalcy.  Today's Friday review show focuses on helping our kids embrace the world around them, no matter what is going on.  On Wednesday I talked with Dr Vic...

July 28, 2021 05:00 - 24 minutes - 17.2 MB

The last 3 weeks I have discussed the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner and how different people within these regions have managed to lived well into their 100's and remained healthy.  In today's episode I am going to take everything I have learned from the book and apply it to the 6 B's of being a Physician Dad - your Brain, Body, Beliefs, Better-Half, Business, and Bucks.  Each of these Blue Zones has a direct and indirect effect on ALL of these foundations.  It is up to us to determine how ...

Friday Review - The Power of the Yam

July 23, 2021 05:00 - 9 minutes - 6.84 MB

In this week's Wednesday episode we discussed the Blue Zones of Okinawa and Loma Linda.  During the discussion on Okinawa, the topic of the sweet potato was brought up and how he was the primary food source for the people of Okinawa up until World War II. This topic got me thinking about how the root vegetable of the sweet potato and other yams and tubers have had an impressive inclusion into our lives as people. Did you know the production of progesterone and cortisol was made more main s...

This week's episode is part 3 of a 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner.  Today I discuss the locations of Okinawa and Loma Linda, focusing on their similarities and differences that yield some of the world's oldest and healthiest people.  Do you pay homage to your ancestors on a daily basis?  Do you drink at least 6 glasses of water a day? Do you remind yourself to only eat until you are no longer hungry, rather than eating until you are completely full? These are just...

Friday Review - Is Your Soft Water Killing You?

July 16, 2021 05:00 - 8 minutes - 5.79 MB

In this week's Wednesday episode I discussed the Blue Zones of Sardinia and Nicoya.  One thing I DIDN'T discuss is the water found in the Nicoya region and what it may be in fact the fountain of youth (or at least helping keep people healthy).  In today's world you hear commercials on the radio about getting soft water units - filters that basically filter everything out of your tap water outside of the base elements it is created from.  We advertise this as a way to make your water health...

Friday Review - Making Better Food Choices for Our Family

July 09, 2021 12:00 - 10 minutes - 7.49 MB

This Wednesday's episode was Part 1 of a 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner.  I talked a LOT about food choices and how this may play a role in our longevity.  How can we take what we learned this week and apply it to our own family?  One of the hardest things we are faced with in the United States is that we have been TOLD how to eat for a very long time.  Breakfast foods are different from dinner foods.  Somehow sugary cereals are considered part of your daily meal, but...

Blue Zones Part 1 - What Are They and How Do They Apply to Being a Dad?

July 07, 2021 04:00 - 26 minutes - 18.5 MB

This week I start a new 4 part series on the book Blue Zones by Dan Buettner.  In the book he describes various areas around the globe where your chance to live past 100-years-old is significantly higher than the rest of the world.  Why is that?  What is it about these locations that heavily influences each individuals health and wellbeing? In Part 1 of 4, I focus on what Blue Zones are (in case you haven't heard of them) and how they apply to being a dad.  I touch on some common themes thr...

Friday Review - How Father's Day and Going to the Beach Relate

July 02, 2021 05:00 - 7 minutes - 5.11 MB

This week's Wednesday episode had me discussing my Father's Day this year, and why I think EVERY day should be Father's Day.  Confused?  Make sure to go back and listen to the episode. Today I discuss how I relate Father's Day to going to the beach (I am literally at the beach the day this episode releases).  We sometimes forget to just let the day happen.  On Father's Day, we try not to stress about work and generally do what we want to do.  At the beach, the same thing happens.   Why don'...

Father's Day Episode - 1.5 Weeks Late (For a Reason)

June 30, 2021 05:00 - 18 minutes - 12.7 MB

I hope ALL of you dads out there had an awesome Father's Day.  This day only comes around once a year, so getting to enjoy it as an absolute must.  For me, this day also fell around the date for our moving out of our house, our wedding anniversary, and our youngest's 5 year-old birthday.  Needless to say, the day was there; much was attempted early in the day to help me feel special, however by the end it was business as usual.   Now, I am in no way bitter about this.  Life is constantly mo...

Friday Review - Strategies to Help Your Kids Stop Yelling

June 25, 2021 05:00 - 6 minutes - 4.57 MB

This week's Wednesday episode focused on our BRAINS and why we CHOOSE to yell as parents.  Yes, I said choose.  It is a choice you make, even at the most primitive level.  I also discussed ways to improve that response.  What about our kids?  How can we help them stop the yelling (or at least reduce it) and improve quality of life at home?  This week's Friday Review gives one strategy I recommend to many families (and should also probably do more myself).  Interested in more topics not c...
