As I was putting our 5-year-old to bed the other night, he looked and asked, "Dad, am I worthy?"

Worthy of what you might ask?

This last week our kids finally saw the first Thor movie and Avengers movie.  I know, I know.  We are a bit behind.

If you (somehow) are not familiar with the movies, Thor starts out as a hot-headed, war seeking young adult set to inherit the throne from his father, Odin.  Odin had spent all of Thor's childhood focusing on trying to make him a good king.  Lessons. stories, etc.  However, when it comes time to hand over the scepter, Thor greatly disappoints his father's wishes.  He is then cast out of Asgard, stripped of his power and title, and sent to live with the mortals on Earth.

The entire movie is essentially watching Thor come to grips with his choices and how they led to where he is.  In his mind, his father has forgotten him and his future is bleak.

However, rather than forget about him, Odin decided to give his son another chance.  A spell is cast on the hammer Mjolnir, and if anyone who is WORTHY should lift the hammer, they would be given the powers of Thor.  As in most movies, Thor gets the hammer after learning from his mistakes and then saves the day (spoilers I guess?).

So when my 5-year-old asked if he was worthy, he was relating it to being able to hold Thor's hammer.  Yet, what does being worthy even mean?  How does it vary from parent to parent?  How do we get our kids to not only FEEL worthy, but become the person we hope for them to grow into?

Today's show I focus on this topic and my thoughts behind it.
