Welcome to Episode 1 of our Season 3 of IMPACT! Today we welcome Lilly Woodbury for a catch-up interview. Lilly was our 1st ever guest on IMPACT back in November of 2020. Lilly Woodbury (she/her pronouns) Environmental Solutions & Optimism born in Tofino, British Columbia, on the traditional and unceded territory of Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Over the years she has been working with : Surfrider Foundation Canada past 7 years, and is currently the Regional Manager, leading campaigns to address dominant forms of plastic pollution in our oceans. She just completed her master’s in environmental studies where she explored mechanisms to increased protection of blue carbon ecosystems by helping to enhance Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation authority over them. Previously, she worked with Greenpeace in New Zealand and won Starfish Canada's Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 in 2018. You can see my Master's thesis here. Linktr.ee: Linktr.ee/lillywoodbury Instagram: @lillywoodbury @surfrider_pacificrim @surfrider_Canada @surfridervan Here’s a roundup of some 2023 victories, to spice things up, I’ve listed some top environmental wins 🌶️ ENVIRONMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS 🐛 🏔️ Tripartite agreement between the First Nations Leadership Council, the Province of BC and Canada directs $1 billion to fund Indigenous-led conservation projects with the goal of protecting 30% of the land and sea base in BC by 2030. 🌊 The High Seas Treaty was finally agreed upon in March, enabling the way towards protecting 30% of the oceans by 2030. 84 countries have signed and formally adopted the High Seas Treaty. 🪸Based on public pressure, the International Seabed Authority did not give the green light to industry to start deep sea mining operations. 24 countries have called for a pause or moratorium on deep-sea mining. However, we need to keep making our voices heard so that there’s a global moratorium on deep sea mining. ⚡️Historic investment in clean electricity in the Canadian federal 2023 budget, including $3 billion over 13 years in direct funding to support smart grid and other clean electricity projects. 🏕️In June, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act recognized every person in Canada’s right to a healthy environment, a first for Canadian law.
