Adventure in America (13)
M: Lydia, you've gained weight, haven't you?
W: Excuse me? Are you saying that I'm fat?
M: Of course not! You've just put on a little weight, but you're definitely not fat!
W: You should be careful while we're in the U.S., Jun. You can't just tell people that they've gained weight. They'll be offended.
M: Really? It's just an observation, you know. And doesn't it mean that the person is paying attention to you? So it should be a good thing!
W: In Japan, sure, but in America people don't want to be told things like that, because they're very sensitive about their physical appearance. So you should only say compliments, unless you're talking to a close friend.
M: Oh, sorry. So, where are we going for lunch tomorrow? You're grandma seemed excited to go out.
W: Oh, I was thinking of going to the bistro-style restaurant in town. They have great food, and it's not too heavy of a meal, so it'll be perfect for me to start my diet!
