Darrell Evans has founded and run six multi-million dollar companies since he was 20. He’s a natural entrepreneur whose main mission in life has been to make a positive impact on others. In our conversation we talk about his sometimes circuitous journey to becoming the business mentor he is now, and the lessons he has learned along the way: how to decide what is truly important for you and how to prioritize that, how to become successful in a literal and figurative sense. I hope you enjoy it.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

There is a connection between sports (the team building, the discipline, the practice) and entrepreneurship
It is important to be transparent about the struggles you’ve had in your journey to humanize the process and demonstrate empathy with those who may want to follow in your footsteps
Find out what works for you and hone that. Darrell finds creative juice in “procrastinating”: the adrenaline high of the time crunch and delivering diamond-cut results right on deadline. For a lot of people that would be a “flaw” that would need to be “corrected”.
When you’re considering a new opportunity, you need to check that, if you say yes to it, will that compromise your ability to be the best and most present version of yourself to the commitments you’ve already made.

BEST MOMENTS

“I don't know that I was born an entrepreneur, but I do believe that there are a lot of aspects of my entrepreneurial journey where I have been made, in a sense. I think that there are some unique gifts that we were all given at birth, or we came into this world with. I call that someone's superstar DNA.”
“I've become more sensitive to “opportunity costs” and realizing that I have a kind of newer decision model. … The distinction is hell yes. You can't say yes to all things. So there's good opportunities. But is it a “hell yes” opportunity?”
“I think our weaknesses can catapult us to our greatest strengths, if we are able to find comfort in who we are.”
“Jim Rohn said, “You know, it's not the blowing of the wind that determines your destination, it is the set of your sail. When the winds blow, they blow on all of us.All of us are going through it in some way, shape, or form. The question is, what do we want to do? How are we going to navigate the sail during the wind? Sometimes we wait too long to change the sail.”
