Zach Thompson | Leviticus 23:15-22

Pentecost, which in the Greek language means “fiftieth” was originally celebrated by the Jewish people on the 50th day after Passover in a festival known as the feast of weeks. It is called feast of weeks, because it was calculated by numbering 7 weeks after Passover. The celebration marked the first grain harvest in late spring and is therefore sometimes called “first fruits” (of harvest) or simply “harvest.” It is this Old Testament feast that occurs in Jerusalem in Acts 2 when the church was born. It is therefore, rightly referred to as the first fruits of Christianity when 3,000 people were baptized on that Pentecost Sunday. This sermon celebrates the birth of the church and our purpose in it.
