Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

371 episodes - English - Latest episode: 6 months ago - ★★★★ - 7 ratings

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session. https://listentodrlisa.com/ #jencatron #pauloutlaw

1520_Dr. Lisa psychochats with actor Lauren Hennessy

July 04, 2024 15:55 - 1 hour

Lauren Hennessy is a transgender man but in saying that it is SO simplifying our conversation. Hennessy helped me understand her particular brand of transgenderness in a way that I could really understand that I never have before. She's also charming and fun and sexy in a dude way. She's married to Keith and the Girl podcaster, Chemda Hennessy and works as comic Judy Gold's assistant. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/23/transgender-man-medical-intervention_n_5869118.html

DLG261 Actress Marielina Langsdon has an unusually complex relationship with her mother.

June 27, 2024 17:43 - 59 minutes

Marielina is a New York native, LaGuardia School graduate and accomplished actress. Likely you've seen her on TV. Marilena is the only child of a doctor (dad) and a trained nurse (mom) whose high level job involved running a hospital. The emotional machinations that Maralina has gone through with her parents, her mom in particular, (her dad died when she was 9) has likely contributed to her skills and success as an actress. The circumstances around her mom are emotionally confusing—I don't wa...

DLG1649_Dr. Lisa tries to convince a sex worker to go to a sex party.

June 22, 2024 17:23 - 59 minutes

I had an interesting session with a female sex worker. BTW: That really is her photo—I didn't take it but she did text it to me. This session was complicated, but most importantly it was compelling to have a smart woman talk about why being a sex worker is a sensible option for her. I concur! We get into discussing relationships and I try to explain why the possibility of a sex party might be a good way for her to meet a good guy.

DLG1833 Unexpected insights about Buddhism from Comedian Ikechukwu Ufomadu

June 15, 2024 16:05 - 59 minutes

Ikechukwu Ufomadu is an actor, comedian and entertainer. He trained at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and internationally in The Netherlands and Indonesia. Who would've guessed we'd wind up talking about Buddhism? And so much more! I didn't know a whole lot about Buddhism, so it was fascinating to hear about Ike's practice‚— and which helped me understand why Ike is an original performer, like no other. He has a background in experimental theater from NYU Tisch. When you combine it with his o...

DLG283 Shonali Bhowmik has some great insights about happiness and the life of a creative person.

June 06, 2024 22:00 - 59 minutes

Shonali Bhowmik is a musician, actress, comedienne, filmmaker, writer with a law degree! Her bio is extensive, but here's a taste of what she's involved with mostly right now—she co-hosts her own live variety show podcast series called We Don’t Even Know AND she is the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys for which she is the songwriter, singer, and guitar player. I learned so much from this session with Shonali. She creates purely from the need to create and grow. I kicked the em...

DLG304 Jake Flores talks comedy and polyamory. He's really thought these topics through!

May 16, 2024 18:14 - 59 minutes

I really like Jake's work—he's the real deal—no bullshit. He was on the show in 2015 and it was great to catch up and talk about how is career has progressed. He just got back from touring with a cool band Eve 6. Also we had a very thought-provoking talk about polyamory which was great because like I said—it was real. Check out Jake's comedy. I am a fan and I am picky! More about Jake Flores—he has an interesting background: Flores was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Houston.[3] H...

DLG203 Bestselling author + tarot reader, Margot Berwin, reads Dr. Lisa's cards on the air!

May 09, 2024 19:54 - 59 minutes

My BFF of thirty years, bestselling author and professional tarot card reader, Margot Berwin reads my cards for the first time in two years. I want to find out from her/the cards how my art career is doing. I am frustrated with my career, like every other artist and in this session, I begin to see that it's not always my actual career, it's my emotional problems getting in my way, and things are much better than I have internalized. There's really good thinking about creative careers and a vi...

DLG181 I learned a lot from artists Jen Catron + Paul Outlaw about healthy relationships.

May 03, 2024 19:07 - 59 minutes

You can too! These guys are smart, attractive, and talented, plus they make great, widely respected work together without arguing. IS this real? How is it possible that a married couple can make art together without getting at each other’s throat? I kicked the tires and found out A LOT. They both have equally strong personalities and mutual respect folks! They each come from small towns which helps keep the neurosis in check too. We talk about their current show at Postmasters, http://www.pos...

DLG318 Author/Actor/Writer Robert Galinsky takes us on a journey to Riker's Island where he runs workshops for teens.

April 11, 2024 19:13 - 59 minutes

Robert Galinsky’s had a very rough couple of years with his father growing up. His father had undiagnosed depression which as we discussed, he worked through and resolved.   His childhood experiences motivated him to heal and help others has given him a more than full life as an artist: an actor, a writer, director, teacher, coach. Galinsky's suburban life drew him to find out directly how struggling people lived. Galinsky has been running youth writing workshops in Riker's Island for the pas...

DLG229 Kevin Allison creator of RISK! is so innately real.

April 04, 2024 21:20 - 59 minutes

I had a blast with Kevin Allison in this session. At over a million downloads a month, live shows all over the country, a book and more-RISK! is described as, "a hit podcast where people tell true stories they never thought they'd dare to share." Listen to any episode and you will see what we're saying! It's sooooo exceptional. Kevin is a professional sharer, so he didn't hold back with Dr. Lisa. He talks about his gay group therapy that shrinks kept quitting, his current shrink, what he's re...

Lots of entertainment, learning and a sampling ...

DLG317 Artist Scooter LaForge's life is a great example of a life in art to me.

December 14, 2023 16:01 - 59 minutes

Artist Scooter LaForge is a delight. To be honest, I somehow felt like connecting with him on this show was healing for me-now who’s the shrink!? Scooter’s work is amazing and so instinctual- he cannot not do it. Even though he’s worked with big names like he is as humble as can be. So much to learn from his perspective—growing up as a gay man in a tiny town in Arizona. I have to say I was envious hearing of all the free-range outdoor time he had, but alas the town, it’s sounds really small a...

Did I tell you I opened at gallery to show funny art in a comedy space? Philip Markle and his team at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective generously agreed to work with me and now it's up! I am the director and creator of the gallery. I have always admired Babak's work and now he's the second show in the gallery. He came to NYC for his install and opening so I was able to do this fantastic session here with him. We dig into his influences, life history and I quiz him about the thinking behind some...

DLG345 Dr. Lisa thinks being one of seven children helped artist Beth Campbell room to develop her unique perception on the world.

November 01, 2023 15:10 - 59 minutes

BETH CAMPBELL is someone who’s work first emerged in 2000 and impressed the f*ck out of me at the first greater New York Show. I became an instant fan and have watch her work has expanded and developed since then. So I was thrilled to have her on as my guest. DLG344 Suzanne Murphy sets a great example of what women are capable of — being true to yourself is part of it.

October 03, 2023 16:59 - 53 minutes

Suzanne Murphy is a VERY successful Wall Street veteran (over 20 years). She owns an upper east side apartment, speaks at, and attends NYC social events that no one I know goes to. So, when she seemed genuinely interested coming out to Bushwick and being on my show, I was honored. It’s not even a charity event! It was illuminating for me to hear Suzanne talk about her values and hard work that has led her to have the life she has. She is passionate about setting an example for women to make ...

DLG343 Seth Cerrate and Patrick Bayley talk about their brand new collective: YEA MAN SPA GLOBAL.

September 26, 2023 18:53 - 59 minutes

A banner day for Dr. Lisa! I got to talk with two hot young guys, Seth Cerrate and Patrick Bayley about their brand new collective Yea Man Spa Global which did a project that solicited sex stories in public, set up a warren of office cubicles and then encouraged fair goers to answer the phones and Surprise! It was such a blast talking to these guys about their (only a month old!) art collective and how they hit the ground running from Day 1 and how they see their future. Bright! I have never ...

1610_DLG_Artist Leah Schrager: Artist or Pornographer? Discuss! by Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

August 30, 2023 15:10 - 59 minutes

This is a vintage episode from 2016. To learn more about Schrager, her wide-ranging work and career HERE: https://leahschrager.com/ Instagram @leahschrager @onaartist Leah Schrager and I were aware of each other because we both do therapy as an art endeavor. Leah does work as Sarah White, the Naked Therapist. But her work is much more multifaceted than just one character and one medium. We had a fascinating discussion where we hopefully helped clarify what her controversial work is about...

DLG1819 Jason Zinoman, author of "Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night" digs into Letterman's self-loathing mindset with Dr. Lisa.

August 17, 2023 21:00 - 59 minutes

How could someone so self-loathing as David Letterman)be able to accomplish all that he accomplished which includes having an indelible stamp on American culture? That's the basis of the discussion I have Jason Zinoman, author of the recent seminal book on David Letterman: Letterman, The last great King of Late Night. https://www.amazon.com/Letterman-Last-Giant-Late-Night/dp/0062377213/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Jason is also New York Times Comedy Critic (first and only). DLG303 Did Ben Davis's childhood give him an extra dose of objectivity when writing about art?

August 09, 2023 18:01 - 59 minutes

I start this session by blurting out to my guest, ArtNet's National Art Critic, Ben Davis, that I have an art critic crush on him because I do! And I barely know him. Ben is one of the most insightful, honest, direct and hilarious art writers I have ever read. He really stands out to me in his art writing in that he is able to place art in a cultural, economic and social context in a very articulate, comprehendible way, while somehow uniquely incorporating a great sense of humor which makes h...

DLG1720_Mick Diflo is a comedian who's a paradox of unselfconscious talent.

July 19, 2023 13:38 - 59 minutes

I saw Mick perform at a great show-Morrison Motel from John Morrison and I was immediately taken with the quality of his work - SO SHARP! Here's something worth noting from his bio: "Mick is a former laborer, professional boxer, addiction counselor & skeptic who moved to NYC at 48 & began doing standup." My take on Mick after this session is that he's a natural and despite not having a obvious path to it, the comedian in his soul took over who he is. A talent who is unusually honestly humble,...

DLG316 Edward Farrell gets down to serious business in comedy

July 19, 2023 13:01 - 59 minutes

I had dropped into Brklyn Comedy Club on my way home recently and caught this comedian, Edward Farrell, performing and I loved his act—it was highly original as was his character on stage. When I got home I looked him up and found out he owned 2 bars and the club that I saw him perform in! I got in touch with him and voila‑he was on the show! I dug in heartily and got to know Edward a bit through this session. He’s an introvert with an extrovert’s career. He’s from a long line of self-starter...

DLG302 Holly DeRito talks about the connection between training dogs and being a Dominatrix.

July 19, 2023 13:00 - 59 minutes

I don't usually like to have close friends on because I know the answers to most of my questions and I don't like faking it—but Holly DeRito and I had never discussed the experiences she had when she was working full time as a Dominatrix before she became the Founder and Director of Waggytail Rescue, a small dog rescue with a wide national/international footprint—or should I say pawprint? in the mid-aughts. Holly is a true self-made woman with a highly energetic, generous spirit and is the le...

DLG309 Artists Don Porcella and Christian Williams (aka Kiffy) demonstrate the beauty and rewards of a mentor/mentee relationship in art.

June 16, 2023 14:55 - 59 minutes

I was totally jolted out of my art world cynicism by spending an hour with these two masters, one accomplished and one on his way. Don Porcella is a well-known artist with amazing, original work and a loooong resume of shows, fairs and collectors. Christian Williams, a young talent, seemingly plucked out of Buffalo, NY—comes to NYC and has the great good fortune of being paired with Don through Wild Geese Gallery. They share a sense of humor and other aesthetics in their work, but what comes ...

DLG342 Author, designer, painter, and educator, Laurie Rosenwald is an advocate for making mistakes.

June 06, 2023 18:57 - 59 minutes

Laurie is an incredibly accomplished creative person. She has work in every major publication, author of several books, important design awards... I could go on. Nowadays she is focused on her book and workshop, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose Dr. Lisa is upfront about her counter-transference. She identities with Laurie as far as age and career in commercial art, except Laurie soared where Dr. Lisa feels she flailed partly because of her self-esteem. Well, also, Laurie IS exceptionally t...

DLG341 LA Comedian, Michael Regilio is back in town and he has some interesting research on porn.

June 03, 2023 22:12 - 59 minutes

Michael Regilio, a super smart, HILARIOUS, LA comic, was on DLG about a year ago. We learned quite a bit about his background which includes him having to wear an eyepatch as a child. Since that time Michaels career as a comedian has really accelerated and he stopped by the Radio Free Brooklyn Studios while he's in NYC performing. See him while he's in NYC HERE. Recently Michael was hired by the Jordon Harbinger podcast to research and co-host his featured Sunday show-Skeptical Sundays. The m...

DLG312 Comedian Michael Regilio stops by while on tour here from LA!

May 18, 2023 19:37 - 55 minutes

Michael is an amazing LA comic here for a week of shows in NYC. His presence is a delight on stage but its his writing that supreme -extremely smart and original. We learn that Regilio has had a problem seeing out of one eye since birth and had to wear an eyepatch until around the age of 7. He grew up in a strict Catholic household where he was the king of outsiders in school. You'll have to listen, but there's so many crazy hijinks that happened because his school decided he was gay (he's no...

And her achievements are as much a bi-product of her intentions, not simply her goals. She is currently the Content/Editorial Director for Adulted Magazine, A wellness magazine for actual grown-ups—a career which she loves. DLG326 Artist Colin Radcliffe generously shares some intimate details behind his highly personal, complex yet entertaining work.

March 22, 2023 16:11 - 59 minutes

I've watch Colin's career quickly advance as I knew it would from the first time I saw his work, right after he landed in New York. Colin is queer, brilliant, funny and ADORABLE. He's very well liked as anyone could see at his recent opening and birthday party. Colin's porcelain sculptures are birthed from the world of modern dating with apps. Colin seems to have a healthy perspective on all of it. He's not invulnerable, but he is sensible. So this session is a great perspective on Colin's wo...

DLG324 Philip Markel is making it happen and not just for himself-all of the funny people are invited.

March 09, 2023 21:35 - 59 minutes

Personally, I’m a HUGE FAN of the Brooklyn Comedy Collective in Williamsburg, so when, Philip Markel, the Founder and Artistic Director agreed to come in for a Dr. Lisa session, I was thrilled.  Philip is the chilliest version of a Type A personality that I have met. He’s warm, welcoming, exuding a contagious sort of joy. The most obvious question in my mind was “How does he do it all?”, but our session went far past that simple question. Philip is a multitalented, (improv, singing, dancing, ...

DLG323 A funny/serious session with comedy mentor Lana Siebel.

March 01, 2023 18:15 - 59 minutes

I met comedian/writer/actress/super mom/wife Lana Siebel about 2 years ago when I started going to comedy open mics regularly. I honestly don't think I would have stuck with it without her. Lana is hugely talented but also a leader and a great example/inspiration for a creative in any field. We touch on Lana's journey as a Ukrainian refugee to America at age 7—for a deep dive into her experience of coming to the US—listen to an earlier episode with Lana HERE: Lana Siebels's life story is hard...

DLG322 Julie Unruly wants to make the world a better place and she's not fucking around.

February 14, 2023 00:36 - 59 minutes
