Welcome to the Hundred and First episode of Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Barry Dov Katz looks at Masechet Shabbat Daf 102. The Mishna and Gemara explore the question of how much “building” do you need to do in order to be liable for breaking Shabbat. A tentative definition offered by the Mishna offers a window into what is intoxicating yet frustrating about Talmud study: It’s all about how you punctuate and looking for clues about ultimate meaning in the smallest details of a close reading.
Barry Dov Katz is the rabbi of the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale in the Bronx. He is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary and serves an adjunct faculty member at JTS mentoring rabbinical students.
The opening and closing music for this podcast is Ufros from The Epichorus album One Bead.
