I’m still reading Obviously Awesome by April Dunford, and it’s an excellent book on positioning your company or your product.

She has a great tip on page 137 on how to make sure you’re not niching too small.

She says, “The best way if your chosen subsegment is big enough, is to determine how many sales you need to make in the next year to meet your revenue goals. If you need to close 30 sales, or 30 deals, to make your numbers this year, and your target segment only has 100 businesses in it, you’re going to have to look elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you only need to close 30 deals and there are thousands of businesses in your subsegment, it’s likely big enough for now.”
