Building a Fanbase in the Digital age

September 14, 2022 14:00 - 8 minutes - 5.64 MB

The way people consume entertainment now is completely different that 20 years ago. People don’t listen to full albums anymore, they listen to singles. Stand up comedy is even making a shift. Instead of sitting through an hour long Netflix special, people just watch chopped up bits on social media. Nobody likes change, but the good news is that this gives independent artists a shot to compete with the artists who previously had all the opportunities. The folks signed to record labels or come...

Entertainment is Art in the pursuit of Joy

September 07, 2022 14:00 - 6 minutes - 4.79 MB

What are you trying to do with your creative career? How do you know when you’ve made it? Is there goal you’re trying to reach? An annual income you’re trying to meet? Take the entertainment industry for example, because that is my industry. Achieving a level where you can do it full time is a good goal, but once you get there, then what?  Then there’s rewards and accolades you want to achieve. Charts you want to climb, venues you want to play. Your fan base is never big enough. You’re play...

Want to level up? Be in the right room

August 31, 2022 14:00 - 6 minutes - 4.39 MB

You’ve heard the expression that your income is related to the 5 people you spend the most time with. Or your environment is directly correlated to who you hang with and where you spend most of your time. Your creative career is similar. If you spend 100% of the time the same circles you’ve always been a part of, how are you supposed to be introduced to new ideas, perspectives you never thought possible? Let's discuss.. ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://www.facebook.c...

August 17, 2022 15:00 - 36 minutes - 25.4 MB

In this episode we are joined by 2 of my favorite indie artists, Nicki Kris & Natalie Jean. We discuss whether to niche down into a micro genre, or try spreading ourselves across multi platforms. When can I quit my 9 to 5?

August 10, 2022 15:00 - 5 minutes - 3.97 MB

Some believe that you need to go all in on "plan A". Some want to play it safe with a "plan B". As Balanced Artists, we like to live somewhere in the middle(B+ ?!). This allows us to execute plan A from a place of creativity, rather than a place of desperation.  Let’s discuss…. ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://www.facebook.com/BalancedArtist https://www.instagram.com/rorygardinermusic https://www.instagram.com/balancedartist

Primary Greatness vs Secondary Greatness

August 03, 2022 15:00 - 4 minutes - 3.46 MB

I read a book recently called Primary Greatness by Stephen Covey, which encouraged this episode’s discussion about how we put long term success at the mercy of short-term success. We focus more on public image and popularity(secondary greatness), rather than contribution or service(primary greatness). Short term greatness without primary greatness doesn’t really work. Chase Energy, Define your life & Find Joy in the Process

July 27, 2022 18:00 - 6 minutes - 4.33 MB

An asymptote is a straight line that constantly approaches a given curve but does not meet at any infinite distance. In other words, Asymptote is a line that moves towards infinity.  Do you see this in your own creative career? You’re chasing one thing, you reach the top of the hill, only to realize there’s another mountain hiding behind it. There really is no finish line, so how do we know when we’ve made it? That is something that is different for everyone and based on their individual go...

80% of Success is Just Showing Up!

July 06, 2022 15:00 - 6 minutes - 4.78 MB

I think a big part of success is just showing up. There are genius’s out there, like the Elon or Bezos who have these grand plans that span over generations to change the world. But when it comes to your career as a creative person, you don’t need to figure out how to keep your stock price on the rise after you’re gone.  Consistency in your craft, and when things go off the rails, you figure it out, and get back on track for the long haul.  Let's discuss... ………………………………………… https://www.bala...

Friends are NOT Fans

June 29, 2022 15:00 - 5 minutes - 4.04 MB

We all have that friend. Every single post is  “come to my show”, “like my page”, “stream my music”. If you don’t have that friend, maybe you’re that friend.  I use to be that friend.... It’s something I’ve only come to realize in later years that when a real fan base is there, then friends and family actually want to come see what all the fuss is about. Let's discuss.... ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://www.facebook.com/BalancedArtist https://www.instagram.com/roryg...

Level Up - As a Balanced Artist w/ Rory Gardiner

June 22, 2022 15:00 - 43 minutes - 29.8 MB

Here is a unique episode where I talk about myself - to another person. I was interviewed recently on the 'Level Up with Shaye' podcast, and thought we covered a lot of ground that I think could benefit the Balanced Artist community. Learn from the successes, learn from the failures and see how you can apply them into your own creative journey.   Listen to Level Up with Shaye here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/level-up-with-shay/id1511863721 https://www.levelupwithshay.com ……………………...

Don't Fear the Poisonous Mushrooms

June 15, 2022 12:00 - 7 minutes - 4.96 MB

I heard an awesome expression the other day. “you can walk around the forest in fear of poisonous mushrooms, but sooner or later you’ll starve”. We talked a lot about fear and self-doubt throughout these episodes, but never imaged we’d starve as a result!   Let's discuss... ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://www.facebook.com/BalancedArtist https://www.instagram.com/rorygardinermusic https://www.instagram.com/balancedartist

How artists can create passive income with AirBNB - Michael Elefante

June 08, 2022 12:00 - 48 minutes - 33.6 MB

Michael Elefante became financially independent in his 20's by acquiring properties and renting on Airbnb. He quit his job, and lived the van life with his wife for a year, while building his brand.  Now living in South Carolina, with baby on the way, they are financially free. Michael built a teaching brand around this niche, reaching over 750,000 followers on TikTok. Independent Artists need to think more about passive income, so that they can focus primarily on their art and not about whe...

How George Clooney changed his approach for creative success

April 27, 2022 14:00 - 3 minutes - 2.49 MB

What if instead of approaching our craft from a self-serving perspective, we switch to a solution based mind set? At the end of the day, we do what we do for us. The creative outlet is good for our anxiety, or the affirmations from the crowd is good for our ego. But what if your art solved problems for others? Let's discuss how George Clooney flipped a switch for success. ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://www.facebook.com/BalancedArtist https://www.instagram.com/roryga...

Do you just want to feel important?

April 20, 2022 17:00 - 5 minutes - 3.81 MB

Are you doing what you love, or doing what our culture tells you what will make you important? Over the years I have seen so many people take a stab at the world of performing arts, and when they don’t immediately succeed, they fall off the face of the earth. What did you think was going to happen? Release your first project, and it would immediately become revered and admired by the rest of the planet, and you’d be whisked off to your kingdom to have the royal treatment for the rest of ete...

My Spouse doesn't support my Art - Unsupportive Partners

April 13, 2022 13:00 - 6 minutes - 4.6 MB

Are you being held back by your unsupportive partner. Does your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend not share the save vision as you?  Maybe they were more supportive in the beginning because it was only a pipe dream, but now that the wheels are in motion, and things are happening, instead of being in the passenger seat next time you, they feel like they’ve been moved into the backseat.  Maybe they like the way things are, and they don’t want anything to jeopardize the harmony that you’ve...

Unleash your creative alter ego

April 06, 2022 12:00 - 7 minutes - 5.22 MB

Our ego is full of limiting beliefs that are holding us back. We may not have the confidence to push past them yet, but with the help of our alter ego, there is nothing that can hold us back.  Without Batman, Bruce Wayne would just another rich dude. Clarke Kent would just be some dork without Super Man.  Without Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé would just be Beyoncé. That’s a bad example. Band Drama - Too many cooks in the creative kitchen

March 30, 2022 13:00 - 8 minutes - 5.77 MB

What happens when there are too many cooks in the kitchen? Everyone has their own way of doing things that they assume is the right way, and eventually nothing gets done. That’s why restaurants only hire one head chef, so that tasks can be delegated to the rest of the team and there is some sort of order and leadership in the organization.  The same sort of chaos happens in the arts. The most common scenario would be bands. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone should get an opinion. But at...

When should I Quit my Day Job?

March 23, 2022 12:00 - 6 minutes - 4.33 MB

Double Down on your Negative

March 16, 2022 12:00 - 5 minutes - 3.58 MB

Have you ever been given unsolicited advice about your creativity. It can come from two places. One, it could be genuine. You may have a flaw that you can’t see, but is crystal clear to a 3rd party onlooker who has the experience to see it and help you overcome it. But a lot of the time, advice from others could be coming from a defensive place. What you do well could shine a light on inadequacies in their own creative path, and feel the need to stomp on yours to feel better about themselve...

World Traveler vs Family Man

March 09, 2022 13:00 - 4 minutes - 3.35 MB

I get the impression Rock Stars don’t have the flexibility in their schedules that you might assume.  Some creative careers allow flexibility in your schedule. You can do it from home and maintain some balance with your family and community. But some careers, especially in the performing arts require a lot of travel, and being away from the place and people that keep you grounded.  When I’m home for too long, I think I really need to get on the road, but when I’m on the road, there is only...

What is your identity?

March 02, 2022 14:00 - 4 minutes - 3.08 MB

Are you happy? Not like "fake Instagram happy", but truly satisfied with your identity. My happiness is derived from everything the public doesn’t see. Family & personal life.  But there was a time when all my perceived happiness was a reaction from stimulation from the external world. Tiktok, Instagram, live performance. I was totally addicted to my environment, and dependent on external cues to reinforce my addiction. Happiness is supposed to come from within, but our priority is how we w...

You're not ready - You can't change your circumstances, so change your beliefs

February 23, 2022 14:00 - 5 minutes - 3.55 MB

You’ve heard the expression “everything happens for a reason”. Because when one door closes another opens. Or a window. You just need to see it and be willing to walk in that direction.  Have you ever been pushing for one particular thing, it doesn’t happen, you’re disappointed. But then you find a better thing, and think wow I am so glad that first thing didn’t happen now.  Think about your relationships. You may be with the love of your life right now, but if you’re being honest with you...

Cash Flow Quadrant for Artists - Building wealth as a creative

February 16, 2022 13:00 - 9 minutes - 6.58 MB

One of my favorite books of all time is Rich Dad Poor Dad. Reading this one in my 20’s, which was a big contributing factor to investing in real estate at a young age, and will eventually be my retirement(since artists don't generally have pensions..) The author of the book, Robert Kiosaki talks about a cash flow formula he uses. On the left side of the quadrant is an E and an S, which stand for employee and self employed. On the right side is a B and an I, which stand for Business and Inve...

Is "making it" really all it's cracked up to be?

February 09, 2022 12:00 - 4 minutes - 2.86 MB

Do you really want to make it? Is that your goal? What does making it mean? It might look different for everybody. For some it may be financial success. Cool cars, big house.  For some, success may be large audiences or millions of eyeballs on your work.  Is that really what you want? Or is it what your ego is telling you, you need? In this episode we talk about some of the past guests we've had on and how notoriety affected them. Let's dive in. ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist....

Don't find your passion, Discover it.

February 02, 2022 14:00 - 5 minutes - 3.69 MB

People always say “find your passion”, pursue your passion. But what if you don’t have a passion? Passion isn’t found, it is created.  When we're laying on our death beds, we regret not having the courage to live a life true to ourselves.  Instead, we lived the lives others expected of us.  That can be scary, but that’s where the balance comes in. Instead of beating yourself up at your day job, feeling guilty that you’re not pursuing your art full time, can juggle both until the creativity...

Your Day Job is Financing your Passion

January 26, 2022 14:00 - 3 minutes - 2.67 MB

Instead of looking at your day job as a distraction, think of it as an asset. Think of it like a record label, funding your life, so that you can focus on the art. If you’re trying too hard to monetize your art, it will stifle the authenticity. You’ll start creating widgets as a commodity, rather than something from your soul. Dunning Kruger Effect vs Paralysis by Analysis

January 19, 2022 13:00 - 7 minutes - 5.09 MB

There are people out there who don’t think they have a thing to offer this world. They assume they have no talent, skills, or reason for showing up in this creative game of life. Then there is this other group at the opposite end of the spectrum who have a cognitive bias called Dunning Kruger effect. They assume they can do just about anything better than the skill set they currently possess. You may think this sort of psycho is annoying. But I think having this bias is great asset to creat...

How to be Funny - Adding Humor to your Presentation

October 06, 2021 14:00 - 4 minutes - 3.52 MB

Humor is a skill. Writing something that is funny is one skill, but delivering it in a funny way is another skill. I had been doing music for 15 years before getting into stand up. People assumed it was a smooth transition because I am so use to the stage. Not at all. It’s a completely different skill. We always talk about one day. One day I’ll be successful, and then I’ll be happy. One day, I am going to get in shape, clean myself up and find a smokin’ hot partner to grow old with. Avoid praise addiction by caring less

September 08, 2021 16:00 - 5 minutes - 3.63 MB

I heard something recently called “praise addiction”. We've been trained to seek out incentives like good grades, stickers, trophies. Impressing people with our achievements gives us a temporary feeling of happiness. However, the more we try to impress, the more frustrated we feel. Or can we use it as fuel? When people ask “what do you do”? Do you feel ashamed for not pursuing work that is intrinsically motivating? Let's discuss... ………………………………………… https://www.balancedartist.com https://...
