This blog was set up by Nathan to keep people informed about his treatment and progress. He wanted to make it as easy as possible to disseminate information quickly. It also served to helped us show our support for him and his family, which it did. Over the past 7 months, nine and a half thousand of us visited the blog and 215 comments were made, not to mention the phone calls, e-mails, visits, thoughts, prayers and fasting. It was such a blessing for us all to have the chance to b-connecte...

To family, friends, and loved ones: This morning at 7:00 Nathan's courageous battle with cancer came to a close as he slipped peacefully into the eternities. Although saddened, we are so very grateful for the peace and comfort which has entered into our hearts and home. Nathan will always be remembered for his love of his family, the gospel, and his dedication to the Lord. His hard work, determination, and strong will to fight for the truly important things in life are what set Nathan apart a...

Well, yesterday we got my MRI results we needed for the Nevada study. Unfortunately, they found several spots in my brain. We asked how many and they said a lot. In the world of Melanoma cancer, this is not good at all. Once it's gone to the brain you're pretty much not a patient for a cure any more, but a patient for palliative care (pain control). The Nevada treatment won't be available unless I have been off of other treatments for 4 weeks. And, they don't like the idea that it has migrat...

It's been awhile since we have posted so I will do my best to provide the updates. Nathan has had a pretty rough week. He has still been struggling with nausea and is really fatigued. We made a trip to the emergency room Wednesday night. He had a temperature of 104 degrees and was a little dehydrated. So we headed over to the ER, and they pumped him full of fluids and started him on an antibiotic. They weren't sure why he kept getting fevers so they assumed he must have some kind of an infect...

This morning we went to some property in Heber to attend a family reunion for the Belcher side of the family. It was good to see so many aunts, uncles, and cousins. I knew most of them had heard of my situation and they were probably a little surprised since I weigh about 40 pounds less than last year. But, they were all very kind and wanted to make sure that Julie and I were doing well. So, it was nice a fun to be there with them. Not much else going on and nothing planned for the week. I w...

We have been at the hospital today for another day of treatment. Today has been much better than last week. Nathan has had a better day today. We met with his doctor to discuss how the treatments have been going. We didn't feel like it was working, and he agreed. So we will be discussing "Plan C" later this week. Aidan is adored by all the hospital staff. He is following in McKay's footsteps in his ability to smile and flirt with all of his admirers. The day went by rather quickly due to the...

Saturday night Julie and I were able to go to the 'Police' concert at the Usana theater in West Valley. McKay stayed with Grandpa and Grandma Conover for the night and Aidan was watched by our friends the Hatchs here in Tremonton. It was nice to be with just Julie in a fun atmosphere. They played all of their hits and we sang and danced. It was a very good time. Sunday was relaxing and I may have over-done it Saturday night. So, I got a lot of rest. Tomorrow I go in for another treatment. It...

July 19, 2008 03:06

The past couple of days have been good days. We went up to the cabin and there is something revitalizing in the cool, mountain air. We all rested, read, watched the boys, rode 4-wheelers, and pretty much relaxed for two days. It was nice and helped to make me feel a lot better. I haven't been sick and only suffer from a little fatigue and a small ache in my left side. We are home now, which is also nice because McKay gets a bath. I have just caught up on some emails and such. The boys are ge...

Hospital days are never fun as a general rule. It didn't help matters that Nathan wasn't feeling well as soon as he woke up this morning. So we knew we were in for a long day. He has finished his infusion so now we just get to watch the clock. We actually met with a different Doctor today because Dr. Akerley is on vacation. After discussing pain and nausea, the Dr. recommended some changes with medications. I am to report to the Dr. on Friday to let him know how Nathan is feeling. He ment...

Today was an alright day. I got a phone call from my case study manager. They have to delay tomorrow's treatment for a day. I won't be going in until Wednesday because I guess everyone is on vacation. hahahaha. Anyway, I guess I get to put off the inevitable for a day. Not much else to report. I have been taking a few pain meds. The pain has been increasing in intensity and has been a bit debilitating. But, I continue on and Julie is always there for me. Nathan

The past few days have been nice. I have been babying my new sod so that it comes in well. Sometimes I like to just look at it and enjoy. Julie took the boys yesterday to Brigham. McKay stayed with Grandpa Conover while Aidan went with Julie and Grandma to get his picture taken. Below is the result. I think he looks great. He has been terrific through all of our travels to the hospital. All day visits to the hospital and long car rides, etc. He has been a real sport and I think Heavenly Fath...

Yesterday I spent the day with my dad in Rexburg, Idaho. There is a project he is working on up there and it was fun to go up there and spend the day. I even got to use my cdl license by driving his semi truck up there. Today I am now sitting (actually laying) in my hospital bed getting pumped full of stuff. I hope it goes as smoothly as it did last week. I probably won't be home until later tonight. I will be going home to a nice surprise. Thanks to the efforts of my neighbors and ward memb...

We are at my family's home for our annual reunion. This morning I took McKay to breakfast at the Park City park where the LDS stake and scouts hosts the breakfast. A lot of people show up for this breakfast and McKay actually ate the food. Then, we as a family set up a new trampoline my dad bought. The grandkids loved it and it took a while to get them to come off. Later a few people went down to Heber where Ryan gave plane rides. We blew off some fireworks, sang Happy Birthday to Julie and...

Yesterday we left at 7:00 am to go to the University Hospital in SLC. We got home around 9:00 pm. It was a long day. I checked in to the hospital, had IVs placed in both arms and had a bunch of pre-drugs put into me to stabilize side effects. Then, around 12:00 I was hooked up to the drug for a 2 hour infusion. By 2:15 I was unplugged from the drug but still connected to saline. I had blood drawn at 3:15, 4:15, 5:15, and 6:15. They do this to monitor my body's changes. Overall it wasn't rea...

Well, I got good news today. First, I will qualify for this new clinical study I will be doing beginning tomorrow. The echocardiogram was a poor picture. Today I got something called a MUGET. Don't ask me to explain. But, it entailed drawing blood, lacing it with a tracer, and re-injecting it into my vein. Then, they used a machine to take pictures of my heart's ability to pump blood and its volume. Also, I asked about my MRI and they said there are still no signs of melanoma mets in my brai...

I didn't go in for treatment today. They called late yesterday and said that there was a problem with my echocardiogram that may disqualify me for the treatment. They think it might be due to bad pictures. So, on Monday I will go in for another test. If I am cleared at that time I will begin this treatment on Tuesday. I guess I get the day off today. Nathan

June 23, 2008 01:51

This past weekend we were able to go to the cabin. It was a lot of fun with cooler weather which was enjoyed. Tomorrow I will be going down to the Huntsman to have labs done (which means blood drawn), an echocardiogram, and an MRI. This is all in anticipation of a new round of treatments beginning on Wednesday the 25th. On Wednesday I will be scheduled into a room at the University Hospital. This new round of treatments is a part of a clinical study with MD Anderson out of Houston. What doe...

I had a great weekend. Julie and the boys treated me well yesterday for Father's Day. I admit I was spoiled. They are so good to me. This week I plan to do some yard work and spend some time up at the cabin near Lava, Id. Of course I will be wearing the sunscreen and staying in the shade as much as possible. Nathan

I have been able to go to some teacher conferences the past couple of days. It has been good to be with my colleagues. In these conferences we are given up-to-date information on the latest technology and curriculum, we share ideas and success stories, and we get cutting edge information from businesses for our students. It's good stuff and I use a lot of it when I return to my classroom at the end of each summer. Health wise I feel good. Glad to not have to go through hellish treatments any...

We spent the day at the Huntsman today. Nathan had his CT scan, and then we met with his Doctor to discuss results. The good news is that Nathan will not have to do another round of biochemotherapy. Nathan is happy about this because that treatment was very difficult. The other news is that the two spots in his liver are smaller, but the tumor in his lung has actually gotten larger. The Dr. called this a mixed report which apparently only happens 5% of the time. Typically you will have contin...

Friday we went to Smithfield for the Relay for Life event. It was a good experience. Many family members were there and even spent the night and it was surprisingly cold up there. So, thanks to you all and thanks to those who donated. Here are some pics: Saturday night Julie and I were able to go to the temple. It was neat and we're hoping it'll give us credit for our news on Monday. Right now we are just getting ready to go to church. McKay needs a bath- bad. So, he is getting soaked as I...

I made a trip to the dentist yesterday and had two cavities filled. I think my treatments have softened my teeth. They are a lot more sensitive nowadays. The dentist made sure to let me know that just because I have cancer does not mean I can let my teeth go. This weekend we are participating in a Relay for Life in Smithfield. I will probably walk an hour or so. It's kind of neat that they do these things around the state and raise money for cures. My sister Natalie has done a lot of work on...

Friday I went in to work and had a great time. The teachers were great and it was good to see them again. The students were fantastic and many said hi and asked how I was doing. It was a lot of fun. Saturday we had family pictures with Julie's family. I think the pics will turn out great. Julie and I had family pictures with the boys afterward. Both Aidan and McKay looked great (not to mention Julie too). Me, I looked the same as usual- a dude in a suit. We also spent quality time with Julie...
