Who owns the children—parents or the government? Today many people believe it’s the government. In this view, the government supposedly knows what’s best for children, and they should get to dictate what children learn. Parents might just be in the way of the state’s goals.


But when we start with God’s Word, we learn that children are a gift from God. Parents have a God-given authority over their children and the responsibility of training, teaching, and raising children. They’re not the government’s responsibility—children are the parents’ responsibility. That’s because God gave children to their parents to train them up for him.
